Falls can take a serious toll on older adults’ quality of life and independence. To recognize this critical issue, the first week of Fall each year has been designated as Fall Prevention Awareness Week. http://stopfalls.org/news-events/fall-prevention-awareness-week/ Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among people aged 65 and older (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2005). The cost of falls has risen dramatically in recent years. In 2015 the direct costs of fatal falls were over $637 million, while Medicare costs for non-fatal falls were over $31 billion. The average cost of a fatal fall in 2015 was over $26,000, while non-fatal falls averaged almost $10,000. An average hospitalized fall cost almost $31,000. Uncle Doug
I fell and broke my hip in April of this year. Do not attempt this at home alone while your wife is out of the country! Prevention is the key. Edited September 8, 2016 by Uncle Doug
