Prevention Awareness Day/Week

Recommended Posts

The 9th annual "Falls Prevention Awareness Day" will be observed on Sept. 22, 2016 —   The first day of fall !

The event raises awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries among older adults. The theme of this year’s event is  "Ready, Steady, Balance:  Prevent Falls in 2016."
To support this important effort, I've included some information and links below . . .

Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths, unintentional injuries, and hospital admissions for trauma. Falls can take a serious toll on older adults’ quality of life and independence. To recognize this critical issue, the first week of Fall each year has been designated as Fall Prevention Awareness Week.   http://stopfalls.org/news-events/fall-prevention-awareness-week/
Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among people aged 65 and older (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2005).
The cost of falls has risen dramatically in recent years. In 2015 the direct costs of fatal falls were over $637 million, while Medicare costs for non-fatal falls were over $31 billion. The average cost of a fatal fall in 2015 was over $26,000, while non-fatal falls averaged almost $10,000. An average hospitalized fall cost almost $31,000.   For the complete study, see http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022437516300172
