Brundageba
We just spent 1 1/2 weeks on the coast of Veraguas. This time of year it's always dry but this year it's extreme. Palm trees and Mangos remain green but pasture lands and grass are a dead dust bowl for the most part. Rivers are rock trails . Private wells are compromised. Serious ! Folks are advised to collect water when it's on in any container they have because there is no guarantee when it will run again. Electricity is off a lot...and it is mighty HOT! We have much to be thankful for living here in Boquete. Edited April 1, 2019 by Brundageba
Moderators Moderator_02 Posted April 7, 2019 Author Moderators Share Posted April 7, 2019 Quote Windilld, treeplanting to battle drought Posted 06/04/2019 Cattle ranchers in Azuero are resorting to windmills to extract water from deep levels and then deposits it in a reservoir inside the farm. In previous years,, they had to move cattle to other farms "because local reservoirs dried up. A cattle dealer from Herrerano said that at this time of the year most of the reservoirs in the is area dried up, hence he had no choice but to make an investment of approximately $2,000. "We made the economic effort, but we maintain water in this critical moment in the Azuero peninsula," he said. Guillermo Nicholson, of Mi Ambiente in Herrera, urged the farmers to plant trees on their farms because the culture of the Azuerenses "is to have up to 40 hectares and only five isolated trees" https://www.newsroompanama.com/business/windilld-treeplanting-to-battle-drought-
Moderators Moderator_02 Posted April 20, 2019 Author Moderators Share Posted April 20, 2019 Quote Cattle dying as Azuero drought continues Posted 19/04/2019 At least 20 cattle have died in the Macaracas district, of Los Santos, due to lack of water and grass, a product of the drought that is striking the Azuero region. Streams are dry and about five rivers in the area are exhausted. Luis Rodriguez, an affected farmer, commented that in his farm "several animals have died that reach the few springs and lagoons to drink water, get stuck in the mud and cannot leave". Henry Domínguez, another producer, said that, given the scarcity of fodder, the cost of the bale has increased from two dollars and 50 cents to five dollars. Farmer Israel Alonso said that the intense heat and strong winds have dried up the pastures and evaporated the little water in the gorges, springs and lagoons. Marcelino Escobar, reported that summer crops such as tomatoes, chili, watermelon and melon "are running out of water https://www.newsroompanama.com/environment/cattle-dying-as-azuero-drought-continues
Moderators Moderator_02 Posted May 10, 2019 Author Moderators Share Posted May 10, 2019 Quote Drought kills 266 (and counting) cattle Posted 09/05/2019 At least 266 cattle have died in the province of Los Santos due to the drought, while producers say they are still waiting for government aid. Rodrigo Vega, Ministry of Agriculture (MIDA) regional director of Los Santos, acknowledged that the amount may be higher. We do not rule out that the amount is higher because many producers have not come close to reporting their dead animals within the province," he said Vega urged farmers to report the deaths, because it is necessary to quantify the losses of the agricultural sector. He said that the regional MIDA of Herrera and Los Santos prepared an emergency plan to mitigate the effects of the dry season. but is waiting for the disbursement of the $3.1 million that are needed to implement the plan, which, among other things, includes the drilling of 600 wells (250 for Herrera and the rest for Los Santos). https://www.newsroompanama.com/business/drought-kills-266-and-counting-cattle
