Teacher training, one of the keys for quality education in Panama

The training of school teachers and principals are key for this sector to take off and Panama overcome the current reality of "the education of a large number of young people, literally, for unemployment," warned a business leadership today.

The Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama (CCIAP) said Sunday that "no education system will be better than the quality achieved by its teachers", so "the National Teacher Training System should be adopted, as well as the instrumentation of an Educational Observatory to follow up and propose appropriate public policies".

That is one of the conclusions included in a document drafted within the framework of a forum in which the most representative unions of the private sector, including CCIAP, converge in an unprecedented way in Panama, said the Chamber, which brings together more than 1,600 companies of 15 economic sectors in the country.

School principal training must also be strengthened by providing them tools that allow them to be more effective in the management of educational centers, which translates into better administrative and academic results, said the document signed by Panamanian private associations.

The forum, which was activated within the framework of the Agenda País 2019-2024 bill, with proposals for the new Government that will be elected for that period in May, showed it is necessary to achieve the full functioning of the so-called Permanent Multisectorial Council to guarantee compliance with the policies and lines of action for the education sector.

"All of us who have joined together around Agenda País 2019-2024 commit ourselves to monitor together with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) the fulfillment of these actions, since this is probably the last opportunity to guarantee quality teaching and with it the future of the country", said the CCIAP.

These conclusions emerged after the participants in the forum unanimously recognized that Panama's education suffers from "endemic and structural deficiencies," including "teacher preparation lax in academic demands and unequal remuneration among equal tasks, as well as outdated curricula, disconnected from the needs of Panama".

This included an "inadequate infrastructure, and an alarming school dropout," which result in "the education of a large number of young people, literally, for unemployment," the Chamber said in its public statement.

Fabulous idea for Panama to have well trained teachers, necessary equipment, and a update technical curriculum. Longer school day for students might be a good idea also IMO.
