  2. Mr. Mitts had a family who loved him and gave him a good life. He spent a lot of time outdoors, but had the ability to come inside as well. His family left Panama and unfortunately was not able to return due to medical reason. Mr. Mitts is currently in a foster home, but they are moving at the beginning of September and cannot take him with them. He is gentle and loving. Mr. Mitts tested positive for the Feline HIV virus although he does not have the disease and may not for many years. He would need to be the only cat in the home so the virus can't spread, or would need to share a place with cats that already have the virus. Tanya is also looking for a new foster home. She is an adult female cat, approx. 6 years old. She would make the ideal companion. Being older, she has a mellow and mature personality and doesn't need to be entertained like a kitten. She does not get along with other cats and would prefer to be the only house cat. She is looking for a lap to “cuddle” on. If you can help with fostering either of these cuties, even for a short time, please contact us. ARF provides all food and any necessary medical treatment.

  4. Since May, when we meet Kirsten from ARF, we can gladly say that we have made great strides with the "Jaramillo Cat Lady" case. This lady is my grandaunt and me and my family are so grateful for all the help received. In June Kirsten and I agreed to start spaying the kittens and finding them good homes. Carlos, my boyfriend and I decided to keep the kittens and foster them. Previously this would not work for us because we have no way to keep the kittens controlled in the laundry room. We brought 5 kittens in one of the big carriers that Kirsten borrowed to us but it was too small for them. We decided to build a cage where we they would be comfortable. My grandma helped us to look for the materials, and my granduncle, who is very good at construction, helped us to assemble it. Another aunt paid for transport of the cage to our house. This experience brought us closer as a family. Every month ARF has been donating cat food for my grandaunt's cats. Considering that one bag of 25 lbs. lasts 6 days, this is a huge help for her. In the same way ARF helped us to spay all the 12 female cats and 4 kittens. We have found homes for 7 kittens. More will be fixed at the July clinic. We still have 9 kittens waiting plus 16 males. The labor with kittens include: keeping them healthy (feeding, bathing, cleansing their space everyday), giving them worm medicine, taking them to the vet when necessary, socializing and cuddling them. Currently we are using sawdust but the vet don't recommend this plus it attracts a lot of flies. When we contacted ARF my grandaunt had 40 cats. Without the kittens she will have 28. Yesterday she (a very reserved person) told me that she can finally breath knowing that she won't have more kittens coming and sent thanks and greetings to Kirsten. We are deeply thankful for ARF and for the support they give to us. We especially thank Kirsten and Ray; such a loving and compassionate individuals. Pictures are of Gabriella's grandaunt, Gabriella and her boyfriend Carlos and some of the cats. If you would like to donate funds for the maintenance of these cats, please go to: http://www.arf-boquete.com/donate.html and indicate your donation is for the Jaramillo cats. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Upcoming Events BINGO- Tomorrow (Thursday) at Big Daddy's Grill from 1pm-3pm! 7. The puppies we have are getting bigger - and fast! They are only about 4 months old now, but they will be big dogs. They are all fixed and have had all the necessary shots. Their four siblings have already been adopted, and they are still seeking their forever home. We have Mango, Yello, and Billa that are looking for a good home. 8. Abuela is back! This is Abuela. She is approximately 7 years old and has been spayed. We do not know her story, as she simply “showed up” on someone’s doorstep one day. It is very obvious that for most of her life she was probably on a short chain. Her “elbows” and rear show signs that she was made to sit on a hard surface for long periods of time. She has a very sweet disposition and just wants to be loved. Abuela is a large dog, approximately 80 pounds. She was previously adopted, but the owner is not caring for her properly. We want to find a good loving home for her. 10. There will be some establishments that will be shooting off fireworks tomorrow night, and I'm sure a few private individuals/parties. Please ensure to keep your pets inside or secured. A few tips to help them the booms and bangs (taken from positively.com): Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day. Keep your dogs inside during fireworks, preferably with human companionship. If it’s hot, air conditioning will help. Bringing your dog to a fireworks display is never a good idea. Provide a safe place inside for your dogs to retreat. When scared of sounds they can’t orient, dogs often prefer small enclosed areas. If your dog is comfortable in a crate, that is a good option. If possible, keep the windows and curtains closed. Covering the crate or lowering the blinds can also be helpful. Removing visual stimulation can also help calm dogs. Make sure all your dogs are wearing ID tags with a properly fitting collar. Dogs have been known to become Houdini around the 4th of July. Leave your dog something fun to do – like a frozen Kong filled with his favorite treats. Calming Sound Therapy: It is most effective when you first play the music well before the fireworks start, at a time the dog is already feeling peaceful and relaxed. He will begin to associate the music with being calm and content. Then play the music a couple of hours before the fireworks start and continue to play through bedtime. The music doesn’t need to be loud to be effective. Tactile: There are two canine wraps on the market that reportedly help sound phobic dogs. The original Anxiety Wrap was invented by professional dog trainer Susan Sharpe, CPDT-KA. The patented design uses acupressure and maintained pressure to reduce stress. The thundershirt is also a wrap for your dog that provides gentle, constant pressure. Their website reports that over 85% of Thundershirt users see significant improvement in noise anxiety symptoms. Most dogs respond with the very first usage; some need 2-3 usages before showing significant improvement. 11. This VERY sweet and gentle boy has been hanging around Big Daddy’s Grill for the past several days. He is not neutered, and is in need of medical attention (ARF will take care of this). It looks like he might have gotten bullied by some other dogs. Nothing serious, but needs a vet check. They politely asked him to leave, however, he seems intent on making the outdoor area his place of residence. ARF will supply food and medical attention for him, but if we can’t find his owner, he will be up for adoption. He appears to be young (under 2 years) and a shepherd mix - probably weighs about 50 lbs. I cannot emphasize how sweet and gentle this boy is. He already seems to know after just a few short days that the kitchen is “off limits” for him. The staff are being very kind and tolerant of him. He would make an excellent companion with a few training lessons.....he seems to be very smart. If you recognize this dog and know his owner, please contact us. As noted above, if the owner cannot be found, he will be placed for adoption with ARF. 20. Hello everyone! For May, the amount of monthly donations was $1169.00 and expenses totaled $2090.00 Thank you to everyone who contributed! In May 1 dog and 1 cat found their forever home. A total of 22 feral cats were taken to the clinic and sterilized thru our cat trapping program. Please consider donating to this important program thru our website. It takes approximately $300 per month to maintain. Reference “cat trapping” and your donation will go directly for food and medical expenses for the ferals. Bingo For June we are heading back to Mike’s Global Grill. We will have more tables in place for this event so there should be plenty of room for everyone. Thursday June 15th is the date from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Please give us your feedback. We are working on various other venues and would like to hear your thoughts or suggestions. Come early, get your preferred seat and order some lunch. Happy Hour drink prices will be offered. Bring all your friends! The more that attend the bigger the cash prizes! Pancake Breakfast – We are doing it again with a bit of a twist. This will be a combination adoption event and car wash. Come for breakfast and while you eat and socialized your car will be cleaned! Of course, we are accepting donations for this service. Currently scheduled for August 12 – more details coming. If you have tickets from the previous scheduled breakfast they will be honored at the door. Monthly Adoption Event: We are in the process of organizing a monthly adoption event to be held at the library, and possibly other venues in the future. These will be held the first Saturday of each month. Our first one is scheduled for July 1st from 10:00am to 12:00N. Come by and meet your new best friend! Radio Chiriqui On Saturday, May 20th, two representatives from ARF spoke about what we do and the need for the community’s support. We hope this will trigger an upsurge in people willing to volunteer, and also donations. Our goal is to get more Panamanians involved with our mission, and slowly but surely, we are getting there. We are always looking for new volunteers! Come join us! Volunteering can be a rewarding experience where you can meet people with similar interests. We have a wide variety of options available where you can utilize your skills. Here is a run-down of the current volunteer positions we are looking to fill. If you are interested, please email us, or visit our site and complete the volunteer form. Fosters! Fosters! Fosters! We are ALWAYS looking for people to foster the animals we rescue. Currently we have no fosters available so we are in a situation right now that if someone contacts us to help an animal we cannot assist. When you foster for ARF, all we ask is that you can provide a safe and loving environment. We provide food and any medical care needed. We are looking for reliable bi-lingual people to help with rescues. Sometimes it is just a matter of educating the owners on the proper care of their animals and the situation improves. Other times it is an obvious case of neglect or abuse that we must pursue. Fundraising committee: This is a fun committee where ideas are brainstormed about possible upcoming fundraisers and planning our usual events. Represent ARF each week at the Tuesday market: Help with set up and tear down of the ARF tent and the handling of the animals we bring to show for adoption. Also, answer questions from the public regarding ARF and our work. Do you know what you’re feeding your animal? I watched an interesting movie on Netflix the other day. It’s an investigative expose on the inner workings of the commercial pet food industry and how it has largely gone unchecked. The name of the movie is “Pet Fooled”. Check it out. Also, you can go to this link. In 2015 a study on 2200 different types of dog food was done and only 119 were found to be satisfactory: http://iheartdogs.com/company-researches-2200-dog-food-formulas-and-finds-only-119-to-be-satisfactory/ Regulators have developed a special terminology for labeling packages. For example, any product containing the word “dinner”, “nugget” or “formula” only have to contain 25% actual meat. Any product labeled “with” only has to contain 3%, and anything labeled “flavor” such as “chicken flavor” may contain little to no meat. Featured Dog – Wendy is about two and a half years old and gets along well with other dogs and cats and loves to play. She is a bit on the quiet side – doesn’t bark much. She is on the smaller-medium size, and weighs about 18 kg or 40 lbs. Featured Cat - Tanya Tanya is an adult female cat, approx. 6 years old. She would make the ideal companion. Being older, she has a mellow and mature personality and doesn't need to be entertained like a kitten. She does not get along with other cats and would prefer to be the only house cat. 22. The Cat Lady of Jaramillo Written by Kirsten, ARF volunteer I first met Ilsia and Gabriela at the April Los Animales spay and neuter clinic when it was brought to my attention Ilsia had 39 cats. Yes, 39. These were not all Ilsia’s cats to begin with. She is very compassionate and people knowing this would drop unwanted or found cats at her property. Gabriela is a young adult who persuaded her elderly aunt that she needed to have these cats sterilized because before long she would have even more. At the April clinic she brought two females. That was all she could afford to sterilize and transport. I visited her home and saw that the cats were well cared for, but realized she needed assistance. ARF provided cat food and prepared a plan for sterilizing the cats. With the help of Gabriela and her boyfriend Carlos, 8 cats were brought to the May clinic. We will continue to bring additional cats to each clinic as finances allow. Gabriela and Carlos are socializing the kittens and finding them homes. The older cats are ferals. ARF is seeking donations to construct a simple structure to shelter the cats, provide food and sterilization fees. Now that’s a team effort! Thanks Kirsten, Gabriela and Carlos for taking on this project. If you would like to donate to this cause, please click here: http://www.arf-boquete.com/donate.html and reference the Jaramillo cats.
