  4. Hi, everyone, on this beautiful Boquete day! Here are some articles you may find interesting. This one is especially interesting because Panama uses the territorial tax system, which means that it does not tax income sourced outside of Panama. This means that it is possible to live in Panama and pay zero Panamanian income tax and zero US income taxes: Spoiler alert on this one. 5. Dear Friends and Members, Boquete Artworks invites you to our April Gathering, Friday, April 15th at 10:30 on the third floor of the Boquete Library. We are honored to present artist Mitch Myers. He will share his great love for art and his pursuit of a wide range of art work throughout his various careers, which include sculpture, painting and ceramics. Since his arrival in Boquete in November Mitch has concentrated on portraits and will show us how he achieves accuracy in portraiture from real life and photos. In his words: “I will share some of the ways I try to achieve accuracy in portraiture. Achieving a likeness depends on the accuracy of the foundation drawing of the subject. There is a need to get a description of the shape that contains all the features at the earliest stages. This may not be new for most of the artists but we can learn from each other. If the drawing is not right no amount of detail will create a greater likeness. There can be a debate whether accuracy is fine art or just illustration. That will be a debate for a long time to come. I am not Picasso so I tend toward the illustrative side rather than the interpretive side. I find that many people are looking for portraits with accurate drawings.” Please join us this Friday to meet and welcome Mitch Myers and learn more about achieving accuracy in portraiture. We look forward to seeing all of you again. Boquete Artworks Follow us on Facebook and check out our blog to catch the latest news from us! P.S. If you no longer wish to receive emails from us, please hit reply and write "unsubscribe" in the subject line. We'll remove you from our list right away. --

  18. Thank you to those who attended our Hoedown event. From what we have been hearing everyone considered it a success. We would like to especially thank those who donated raffle prizes (Mike’s Global Grill, Panama Red Rum and Panama Joe Coffee) and also to Colleen Hunt for the great meal that was enjoyed by all. Also, Kjersten Van Horn for the line dancing instruction and Stone for the great pulled pork and music provided. We also thank our many volunteers who contributed to the coordination of the event. So March seems to have been the month for people throwing tiny kittens out of cars or putting them in garbage bins and left to die. We have taken on three poor souls that found themselves in these situations. They are currently being looked after and are on the road to recovery. Our donations were good this month and we thank everyone who contributed. Unfortunately, it is another month where our expenses surpassed our donations. A total of $645.00 was received in donations. Expenses came to $860.50. Not a great month for adoptions……only 4 dogs and 1 cat, but to be honest, we don’t have many that are “ready” for adoption at this time. Several are currently being treated for medical conditions. In conjunction with the 105th birthday of Boquete, the Mayor will be holding a “Dia de Animales” on this Sunday, April 10th from 9am-1pm. ARF will have an adoption table with all of our current fosters available to meet. Amigos de Animales will also be sharing a table with us - handing out information regarding animal care and the Animal Law here in Panama. The event will be held in the park. Please come by and give a "pat" to our fosters, or maybe event take one home with you! Bingo is scheduled for April 14th. This month’s theme is “Spa Day”. This was a very popular theme last time we did it, so we are giving it another go. Same time and place, La Posada from 2-4pm. You can make a donation to ARF by visiting our website: http://www.arf-boquete.com/donate.html www.arf-boquete.com --

  22. Recently I was the contact person for some rental property and received a request to check on a tenant who was not responding to contact attempts. I discovered the tenant had died in the property and I was very anxious about the proper steps to take since I am not fluent in Spanish. I was put in touch with Hank Landis, our new US Embassy warden. Hank called the police and gave them directions to the property then immediately came to the property to assist me. Hank stayed on scene with me to deal with the multiple layers of Panamanian authority for almost eight hours until ten at night. There were fourteen authorities of one sort or the other doing various things - all of which required conversation and answers in Spanish. Hank handled it all, explained to me what was (slowly) happening at each stage and smoothed the way forward for me. I don't know what I would have done without his very capable assistance. This is a good man to have in your corner when you are in need. THANKS, HANK! Also, it was a problem because the deceased tenant had no paperwork regarding whom to notify of his death or the required information (and available cash) to pave an easier path to a death certificare. This can happen to any of us at any time. If you have not attended a hospice presentation to learn how to prepare for death in Panama, you are doing a great disservice to the family and friends you leave behind. Food for thought.
