  1. Sorry to say that I have no idea what this posting is about. Is it a fund raiser? Is it a community meeting? Is it a free BBQ? What is this all about? We got the when and where, but how about the who, why and who benefits information? We really could use a lot more information.

Somebody obviously put a lot of effort into their graphics. Nice, but not sufficient.

In line with questions posed recently on this forum, I would like to know to which charities the proceeds are donated.

I'm back after many months. Got my meds under control. And then the first message I read here is enough to make me get off my meds.

If someone is providing a service to collect money, it seems to me that it is only their business what they do with that money. If they want to burn it, okay. If they want to buy groceries, okay. If they want to give it to someone, okay.

Why the heck do you think you have the right to question their actions?

    APOLOGIA

Mistitled. This is not an apology but more about reflections on living in the past.

Well, let's talk about fonts and colors.

    Why? Not interested.

First, I am a person of a certain age (very close to 82),

Okay, every one of us has a certain age. What is the point?

and my eyes are much more comfortable reading fonts that are bold and a bit larger than average.  Long ago, I settled on Arial as the most legible font for most purposes.  In the matter of vision in older years, I am not at all the Lone Ranger.  Here is some information from an article about Typography and Aging Eyes.

    Ho hum.

The population is rapidly aging and becoming a larger share of the marketplace. Thirteen percent of the population is currently over 65 years old. In 30 years that group will double to 66 million people. People change as they age. Sensory, cognitive and motor abilities decline. The built environment is not typically created with the needs of the aging population in mind...

...In general, sans serif faces appear to be the most readable, due to their larger x-heights and consistent stroke widths. Typographic designers must undertake a more comprehensive study of this subject and develop typefaces that work well with the common vision problems of the aging population. It seems clear that there is an opportunity for progress in this area of research...

Why are you wasting my time? I guess I should write why am I letting you waste my time?

The concept of all caps being the equivalent of "shouting" is an artificial one.  For many decades from before the Civil War into the 1980's all text from teletype (teleprinter) machines (civilian and military) was all caps.

I defy you to prove that there were teletype machines at the time of the Civil War.

Throughout my time in the Navy, all typewriters used in communications work were all caps.

And your point is? Not pertinent to the subject in this series of postings. The management of this web site should block your postings because they are ramblings.

I challenge you to identify one single mainstream newspaper from the Civil War to the present time that prints in all caps, or all bold, or red (pardon me, maroon) text.

That you were in the navy is great -- thank you for your service -- but why are you going nostalgic about your navy days in a series of postings about an assault on a resident?

For quite a while IBM computer systems produced only all caps printing.  So for around 120 years all caps was just a normal part of written communications.

I don't think so. Again, the challenge to identify one single mainstream newspaper.... Etc. What you are talking about is specialized communications in a military environment. Not relevant to this situation.

There was really no choice about it, and no one ever considered the all caps format as "shouting."

Wrong. There is a choice. Even you have a choice, as does everyone else. And, I do consider it to be shouting.

I have read that considering all caps text as shouting is a "tradition," but if it is a "tradition," it is a rather recent one.  Though I don't know, I suspect that someone who saw something in all caps (probably a young person who had no clue about the long use of all caps) happened to be bothered by it, got his or her knickers in a twist and came up with the bizarre idea that it was "shouting."

Yes, my knickers are in a twist. Again, the challenge to show one mainstream newspaper.... Etc.

That having been said, I do not write in all caps, mainly because without ascenders and descenders words cannot be read quite as comfortably or rapidly.

Ho hum. I'm stopping reading at this point because there is nothing worthwhile to read other than the ramblings of someone who is trying to convince me that he is enlightened and I have my knickers in a bind. I really do not mean to disrespect you or anyone. You are correct that my knickers are in a bind but you wouldn't like to know the reason for that bind. I shutter to think about what would be written if that line of thought were to cause another outburst.

You obviously put a lot of time and energy into this posting. But what is your point that is relevant to the assault on Richard Moore? Or the AAC mission? You say you are the president. Okay. Who are the other officials of that group, and do they approve of your writings on behalf of AAC in a public forum such as this?

I think I will self banish myself from this web site as was done to me on Ning by its misguided new owners.

And my final comment and final post on this web site is that I apologize -- using that word correctly as defined in the dictionaries that I use -- if you have difficulty reading this since it is not bolded, not in maroon, not shouting, and using normal type fonts without double spaces between sentences, etc.

For the management here, please cancel my account.

But now bold fonts are also triggering calls of "shouting."  With the advent of HTML, most programs on computers have the capability of easily changing fonts, font size, displaying bold and colored fonts, indenting and reverse-indenting text, etc.  Why, goodness me!  Those capabilities are even built into Chiriqui.life!  If they allow such egregious behavior, maybe those capabilities should be removed so that every person who participates on the site is stamped out as with a cookie cutter with no ability to choose to do anything different from anyone else.  Why, we can't have folks running around willy-nilly just writing any way they want to!  That's as offensive as one of those jockey boys astride Dan Patch!  And while we're at it, we should all drive black cars.

Oh, and the colored font?  (It's maroon, not red.)  For me it adds to legibility, but that is probably just personal.  I also add to readability by double line spacing between paragraphs and double spacing after periods and colons.  That is very good standard practice that has fallen into disuse by a lot of people in the computer age (not to mention that many of them cannot spell or use good grammar---but they sure as hell know "shouting" when they see it!).  Finally the colored font helps me quickly find my posts in a long series of posts or to find my emails in long series of emails chained in "conversations" as they are called on Gmail.

In my "former life" back in the U.S. I dubbed myself "The Curmudgeon of Inglewood" in email posts and many of my 40+ published letters to the editor.  Maybe I should resurrect my title and change it to "The Curmudgeon of Boquete."  Certainly I am too old and ornery to stop being a curmudgeon.

No need to check on the missed call by Rodny I mentioned.  My computer remembers these things.  Here is an excerpt from the text of a message from Rodny reporting the problem.  I mis-remembered and thought it was a heart attack when it was a stroke.

"...after getting up from bed this morning, I found a text message on the hotline phone saying that at 1 05 earlier in the morning, a phone number tried to call me. So I called the number to find that it was a lady who tried to call but the call did went through, and that the reason for her call was that her husband had a stroke. They found an ambulance on their own and take him to the hospital where he is on treatment . The hot line seems to work fine now since today there has been 2 calls on how to sign in and one for fire.
I contacted Movistar and they are saying that their system went under some maintenance and that it may have cause the malfunction.
So for now the hotline is up and running."

Think about it.  If the message was from Rodny, and I have it, does that not give you a clue that the service was the AAC Hotline?   The problem occurred before Rodny Direct was activated for the Boquete area.

The message from Rodny is more than sufficient to show that he did not receive that particular emergency call.  The name of the caller is not in Rodny's message, and there is no need whatever for that name to become involved.

    Bob G,

With all due respect, I haven't got a clue what you are talking about. Maybe my IQ is just to low.

My opinion is that your writings make you and AAC all the less relevant to me because you are always putting other people down. You are the one damaging your reputation, not others.

Are you asking me to believe that Franc's cell phone and your computer are connected together? What message are you referring to? Who are you quoting? Why do you write in red ink? Why can't you write short statements giving facts? How much has AAC actually published in the last two years? I find it convenient that there was a claimed cell system error that gets you off the hot seat.

I no longer am going to dedicate my time to try to figure out what you are saying. I hope it is clear to you but believe me when I tell you that I have no clue.

  5. I know nothing of the details about this incident other than what I read here, plus that our housekeeper told us about it. (I still don't understand how bochinche can be faster than the speed of light, but that is the way things work here).

My first thought was I hope the victim gets better. And then learning that the victim was an inspector for Alto Al Crimen caused me to do a double take. One would think that someone involved with AAC would be a bit more attentive. And then to hear of this not from AAC but from Rodney Direct was indeed interesting. Rodney sure is doing a good service, even for the AAC guys. Nothing yet from the AAC about one of their own guys.

I know where I am putting my security interests in the future and it won't be AAC. This seals the deal for me in favor for Rodney. Okay, bring on the flames.

Best Wishes at New Year's are generally directed at another person's health and prosperity, and I pass them on to all.

Mine often include a word or two about all of humanity living in peace and harmony, and I pass those on to you, too.

Perhaps not my best, but maybe one of my better wishes this year, is for less acrimonious and non-productive content to be posted by all members of the local online community. I'm passing that on as well.

Para 3 is spot on Sr Keith. Why can't we all just be friendly and helpful, and act like proper adults that our parents taught us to be?

  7. I've been laying low lately because some people didn't like my posts about Don Ray. Now I see this and I have to say that who wrote this doesn't check grammar, and must not live here.

Look at "Anyone ... ARE ...".

Look at how Chiriqui is spelled.

Look at how Boquetena (actually it should be Boqueteña) is spelled.

  8. Don Ray is complaining on Chiriqui Chatter about being banned on this website. He was asked why, and he replied that it is something that probably only he would understand. I agree with Don Ray on that point. I don't understand what the problem is here. And so here is what I posted on Chiriqui Chatter this morning.

"So you had to ask three times for CL to close your account. Sounds like slow response on the part of CL. However, I’m reminded of something my Dad taught me a very long time ago: Be careful of what you ask for because you just might get it. You asked three times for closure of your account on CL and you got it closed. What’s the problem here? Why is this even being discussed?"

    xoxo

Below the dashed line is DR's full posting to answer a question by Alan Ross to say why he requested that his CL account be closed. I've bolded what are the most important sentences to my line of thinking in his long answer to a short question. My experiences in life tell me when there is a short question followed by a long answer then the guy answering is making excuses over covering up the real truth.

Again I agree with DR: this only makes sense to him. When I looked at DR's profile here just now, it doesn't say banned. It says "Closed (Member Request)."

And so I close, repeating my earlier question: What's the real problem here?

    ------

    1. Alan,

I requested to have my membership removed and my profile removed.

The reason probably only makes sense to me.

Yesterday, the Embassy issued a Outreach notice. I posted it after correcting a mistake the Embassy had made in their email. I then posted my normal link to my Embassy post on FB and Chiriqui Life.

Shortly thereafter, I received a notice from Chiriqui Life telling me that my post had been removed. When I went to Chiriqui Life, I saw that Bud had posted the Embassy’s email with errors still in the post.

I replied that I always posted a link to my site and didn’t paste the message, because the Embassy often made mistakes and when that occurred, I only had to change he post in CC.

That message on CL received a comment from Bud stating he had it handled.

I then replied that he might want to correct the URLs in his post because they were wrong,

He obviously changed the URLs and then replied with a cute remark saying something like “They are working spiffy here” and something about my needing help.

Since he had made the change on his site, anyone coming that had not seen the erroneous post would think I did need help, because the new URLs worked.

That convinced me to make the request to have my membership removed along with posts and profile.

He chose to handle it differently.

As I said, this probably only makes sense to me.

Bantering...the hallmark of a vibrant and successful forum. :-)

In general, I would agree that bantering can be both entertaining and an indicator of a "vibrant and successful forum". However, bantering to excess, or about a losing situation can be a sign of bad judgment, teasing, and possibly even ridicule.

    Just my thoughts.

  10. Interesting twist in this odyssey known as Boquete.Ning. I was on Ning earlier today and saw an interesting posting by the head guy at Planet Telecom - Dave something or other. I suspect that Ning will both banish him to the hinterlands and also delete his posting. He can then proudly wear one of Fran's logos (or are they called icons). Oh well, enough for my ignorance.

So as to capture for perpetuity what Dave wrote on Ning this morning. I did a screen capture. Wouldn't it be nice if all of Ning's sponsors jump ship! I'm wondering why they are still there. Here is Dave's post:

  11. I don't understand why there are so many people complaining about getting dumped from Ning. You should thank them for eliminating pestilence from your lives.

From what I see, Ning is is a classic dinosaur who doesn't know it is heading for extinction. I no longer go there to read the content.

Please folks, move onward and upward, not backwards.
