See below for the original announcement with more details.
    ====================================

Hello everybody. We were able to get our Gold Center Stage seats in the theater at ¨”jubilado” price..so we were able to adjust our total price for this trip to $250.00….instead of $300.00!!!

On March 4 bus will be leaving at 7:30AM instead of 8:30AM (bus leaves from the “Gym” right behind the Terpel gas station at the entrance of Boquete).

Leaving Boquete at 7:30AM will permit us to get to our hotel…Wyndham Albrook Mall Hotel… around 3:30PM/latest 4PM (March 4 is a Sunday..so there is hardly no traffic on the road or in the city that day).

This way you have some time on your own to go to the mall, to the hotel pool,  or just hang around until we leave for the Musical at 7:15PM.

This play  “Panama, The Musical” is the talk of the town.  “A Love Story with a Roaring Twenties Twist – think Moulin Rouge meets the West Side Story on the Panama Canal”. This play is in English. We could not let this amazing play pass by without making it possible for a group of people from Boquete to go see it.

WE JUST CAME BACK FROM SEEING THIS MUSICAL AND I HAVE TO TELL YOU THIS MUSICAL IS A “MUST SEE”!!!

We have made it very affordable and added a lot of perks to make it a memorable trip.

We will be leaving the hotel at 7:15PM to get to the theater  in time for the  8:30PM evening performance of “Panama, the Musical”.

This will be their LAST PRESENTATION SO BE PREPARED FOR IT TO BE AMAZING!

After the show, our bus will take us back to the hotel where you can crash for the night, or go for a nightcap to their lounge.

The next morning you can enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast. The hotel is connected to the Albrook Mall where you will be able to do some shopping before our departure at 12:30pm. If shopping is not what you are interested in you can go into Panama City to do whatever you want.

     The 5 Rites

    (15 Minutes Of Daily Exercise)

Presented by Michael Cooper at The Haven Hotel

Excerpts from attendees....(be sure not to miss Merl's 1st and 2nd testimonials!)

--ADRIANA SPITTELER, (January 2018) Boquete Resident says

I joined Michael's "5 Rites Clinic" in September 2017 and when I started I could not lift my head at all when lying on the floor. Michael showed me special exercises to strengthen my neck-muscles and I have fully regained my strength to lift my head, it's really incredible. I really love it and normally do my "5 Rites" in the morning. It takes me 15-20 min max, including some intermediary stretching exercises (introduced by Michael as well).  Michael is not only a fantastic practitioner, but also an excellent teacher. With his skills, his passion and compassion he did instill a love for daily practice, which I never thought would suit me. I have to admit, the "5 Rites" have changed my life for the better and I thank Michael for convincing me to join his clinic. Do the same and you will see and feel positive changes soon!  (SEE BELOW FOR ADRIANA'S FULL TESTIMONY)

—MERL WILL-WALLACE, (October 2017) Boquete Resident & Businessman says   Ten weeks ago I took the Five Tibetan Rites at The Haven from Michael Cooper... For years I have had paroxysmal vertigo, which makes me sick to my stomach any time that I lay down or spin around... Within a week the vertigo was gone.  Almost immediately I found I had a lot more energy. I have also lost 10 pounds with no change in diet, except I don't tolerate coffee as well as I used to (way too much energy now)...Most importantly, my stubborn high blood pressure is now normal. Overall I feel stronger, more flexible and, well, yes younger. Thank you Michael for introducing me to this miracle in my life."

    --MERL WILL-WALLACE - UPDATE Feb 12, 2018

Michael, it has been 6 months now since I took your clinic on the five Tibetan rites and am still amazed by how increasingly healthy I feel. My energy continues to increase each week, leaving me to wonder if there is no top end to this practice and health. The five exercises have gotten easier and easier with each passing week to the point they seem effortless (even number 4, which I thought I could never do).  I have to say, rain or shine, the five Tibetan rites are an essential part of my day.

--LAURA, Boquete Resident says "Something my husband and I can do and encourage each other while doing....Notice increased stamina/strength....My clothes are and continue to get looser...must go shopping!...Now I look at my calves and wonder 'Whose are these anyway?'  They look so different!...Like the convenience of doing it at home in comfy clothes...much more likely for me to keep it up if it's at home, doesn't take much time and I get noticeable results relatively quickly.

Thank you Michael for all you do,

Laura                                         (SEE BELOW FOR FULL TESTIMONY)

—CLEO, Boquete Resident says   "I am 74 years old and a few months ago I attended The 5 Rites class from Michael.  It has been very beneficial for me.  Better balance, feel stronger and more stamina.  I like the fact that I can do the exercises at home in a short amount of time."

--EM, Boquete Resident says   "Michael, thank you so much.... just wanted to say 2 days down but can already feel a big difference in myself afterwards.  It seems to make me more energetic but also things are brighter and clearer.   I am benefiting hugely from more blood flow and oxygen.  Seriously, for 10 mins effort, this is a winner!"

    FULL TESTIMONIALS

    ADRIANA SPITTELER, Jan 2018

Michael has been one of the best teachers I've had. I joined his "5 Rites Clinic" in September 2017 and when I started, I could not perform the 2nd Rite, because I could not lift my head at all when lying on the floor. Michael showed me special exercises to strengthen my neck-muscles and now I am up to 21 repetitions and I have fully regained my strength to lift my head, it's really incredible. I really love it and normally do my "5 Rites" in the morning. It takes me 15-20 min max, including some intermediary stretching exercises (introduced by Michael as well) . If I don't manage to do them in the morning, I am doing them prior to bed-time, both works and I hardly missed a day since I started.  Michael is not only a fantastic practitioner, but also an excellent teacher. With his skills, his passion and compassion he did instill a love for daily practice, which I never thought would suite me. But it does and I have to admit, the "5 Rites" have changed my life for the better and I thank Michael for convincing me to join his clinic. Do the same and you will see and feel positive changes soon! Adriana

    Merl Will-Wallace, October 2017

Ten weeks ago I took the Five Tibetan Rites at The Haven from Michael Cooper. I have done yoga and tai chi before and was wondering how this could be so much better. The beginning was anything but auspicious. For years I have had paroxysmal vertigo, which makes me sick to my stomach any time that I lay down or spin around. Rite one and two had me on the ropes. With Michael's direction I just pushed on. Within a week the vertigo was gone. I started thinking I could not do five reps. I did, but thought I could never increase two reps in a week. I did, and I did two more each week until I hit 21. I have not missed a day in ten weeks and don't plan on missing one ever. Almost immediately I found I had a lot more energy that was sustainable throughout the day. I have also lost 10 pounds with no change in diet, except I don't tolerate coffee as well as I used to (way to much energy now). Most importantly my stubborn high blood pressure is now normal. Overall I feel stronger, more flexible and, well, yes younger. Thank you Michael for introducing me to this miracle in my life.

    Laura, November 2017

Something my husband and I can do and encourage each other while doing.

Increased strength in weird ways, like holding the hairdryer/curling iron.

Notice increased stamina/strength when doing occasional reps of my other exercises.

My clothes are and continue to get looser, not only pants but sleeves on short-sleeved blouses...must go shopping!

When on the mat for #4, I look at my calves and wonder 'Whose are these anyway?'  They look so different.

Took monthly photos, as suggested...haven't looked at them yet.

Like the convenience of doing it at home with comfy clothes, bare feet and a yoga mat.  Much more likely for me to keep it up if it's at home, doesn't take much time and I get noticeable results relatively quickly.

I'm a lot stronger, more flexible and coordinated than I thought!!

Thank you Michael for all you do,

    Laura

    Em, October 2017

Just wanted to say 2 days down...rest of life to go...but can already feel a big difference in myself afterwards.

It seems to make me more energetic but also things are brighter and clearer.   I am benefiting hugely from more blood flow and oxygen.

Seriously for 10 mins effort this is a winner.  Thank you so much.

OPINION: Victims of poisoning and bureaucracy

    Dietilenglicol-victims-620x264.jpg
    Post Views: 119

The survivors of the massive poisoning with diethylene glycol and the relatives of those who died because of this poisoning still face bureaucratic barriers that seem insurmountable. After this accumulation of injustice, the Administration Attorney General has formally informed the Minister of Health, the Director General of the Social Security Fund, and the Minister of Economy and Finance, that the failure of the State for these Panamanians should be corrected. In recent weeks, criminal justice has shown its weakness and the weakness over those accused of massive poisoning. It is, however, in terms of the services of health, therapies, periodic examinations and compensation, that the Government agencies have failed the responsibility of fulfilling their tasks. Here is the most important lesson of irresponsibility in the management of public services: theconsequences are paid by innocent people. There is no right for so much indifference. Enough already! …LA PRENSA, Feb. 13.

TWO PEOPLE died in traffic accidents in the first two full days of Carnival, one in the district of Arraiján and the latest one in Herrera.  Robinson Ruiz, approximately 40 years old, in Herrera,  was killed in a hit and run incident in the village of Parita at 8 o’clock on Sunday night. According to Transit Police reports  Ruiz died instantly due to the strong impact he suffered. His death brings traffic fatalities this year to 41

On Saturday night, in the district of Arraiján, an unidentified man was hit and killed by a sedan-type vehicle in the Cerro Silvestre sector, when he tried to cross the four lanes of the highway.

The Joint Task Force (FTC) reported that during Carnival Monday there were 81 traffic accidents nationwide with 45 injured and one fatal victim (Herrera).

Traffic police have urged pedestrians to use safety lines and pedestrian bridges when crossing roads.

STRONG WAVES of up to four meters,   on the Pacific and  Caribbean coastlines  led to the raising of yellow  flags on all beaches under the care of the Joint Task Force on Tuesday, February 13

The flags will remain until Wednesday, February 14.

“The preventive measure will allow lifeguards to assess the risks and place the red flag if necessary,” said to José Donderis, director of the National Civil Protection   System.

    11-year poisoning nightmare continues

    diethyline-620x264.jpg
    YEARS of protests have failed
    Post Views: 191

PANAMA’S  Administration Prosecutor is trying to light a fire under four government bodies to take action over the  11 years-old diethylene glycol poisoning scandal that killed hundreds and left hundreds more suffering and in need of care.
    Rigoberto-GonzAlez_LPRIMA20150107_0295_23-300x169.jpg

    Rigoberto Gonzalez

González sent letters to Miguel Mayo, Minister of Health; Alfredo Martiz, Director of  Social Security (CSS); Humberto Mas, director of the Institute of Legal Medicine and  Forensic Sciences, and Dulcidio De La Guardia, Minister of Economy and Finance.

“I make a formal request  to you to be the auditor and guarantor that, at the time any person who is certified as an affected patient or claims to be affected  and requires the services of the institution under your charge, that they are received and treated with the priority they deserve, in order to ensure respect for their rights, “says Gonzalez in the letters.

The first cases of poisoning in CSS patients were known in September 2006, but there was an early cover-up, and 11 years after the massive casualties from cough syrup contaminated with diethylene glycol, that originated in China, the struggle of the victims in search of justice continues.

    victims-300x169.jpg

    11 YEARS of protests

They have knocked on the doors of the Social Security Fund (CSS), the entity that distributed the poisoned medicines; have gone to the Ministry of Health, and to the Presidency and have held vigils in front of the Supreme Court and government buildings,

Now, they have reached González, whose office has been received, at least 72 complaints from people who claim better care.

The notes to May, Mas and Martiz were sent on January 5, and to De La Guardia on January 10.

It warns them of his concerns about the situation faced by affected patients and specifically for those people who have repeatedly appealed to the  Public Ministry Attorney General to file complaints against different institutions of the State.

Gonzalez adds that in his capacity as prosecutor  attending to his powers to monitor the official conduct of public servants,  he asks them to be supervisors and guarantors of service to the affected and that “they are  treated with the priority they deserve.”

    No Reactions
La Prensa contacted the Public Relations departments of the Ministry of Health, the CSS and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, to get reactions to  Gonzalez’s request, but there was no response.

The victims have also approached  National Transparency Authority (Antai). To report the lack of specialists on analysis and case studies in the evaluation committee. Pedro Montañez, a poison victim  said:  “we must also pay attention to the seven medical professionals that make up the commission ” and cited a Ministry of Health resolution, in which two nephrologists and a gastroenterologist of the CSS  were appointed ad honorem in addition, to two specialists of internal medicine and gastroenterology of Hospital Santo Tomás and a lawyer of the MEF, but no  toxicology specialist.

Montanez said a clinical toxicologist, was a fundamental and basic specialty to detect who could have been contaminated by the diethylene glycol.

He said t the specialists with expertise in nephrology, internal medicine and gastroenterology can complement, but not replace the knowledge of a clinical toxicologist reports La Prensa.

    Legal moves
On February 1, 50 lawsuits were presented before the Supreme Court on behalf of victims and relatives of people affected by the poison, reports La Prensa.

Each one claims, at least, $6 million from the Panamanian State with the argument that they have not been properly attended.

Among the evidence provided is the ruling of the Criminal Chamber of the Court that sentenced ex-staff members of the CSS and individuals related to the purchase of the raw material with which they made the medicines.

René Luciani, director of the Social Security Fund (CSS) between 2004 and 2009, is being held in El Renacer prison serving a 16-month prison sentence.

the former Director of Pharmacy and Drugs of the Ministry of Health, Pablo Solís, was sentenced to 18 months.

A compliance judge declared the 18-month sentence of Linda Thomas, of the CSS Medicines Laboratory extinguished allowing for time in preventive detention reports La Prensa.

New $3.5 million University Headquarters in Boquete’s Rapidly Developing Commercial Zone

    17760798_1149322751845223_6908199939962295426_o-1024x683.jpg

Many Panamanians believe in higher education.    Young Panamanians often work in day jobs while going to University at night.  They study to become accomplished business people, engineers, accountants, attorneys, computer programmers, teachers and many other specialties.   It is impressive how many achieve bachelor level and advanced degrees.

Several significant universities serve these Chiriqui Province’s hard working students.  Until now, their primary operations have been in the area’s only sizable city, David.   U.N.A.C.H.I. is one of those universities.   They have offered classes in Boquete while operating at night from the local high school since 1997.  Now, U.N.A.C.H.I. is investing in a major expansion of their efforts in Alto Boquete.  The new facility just broke ground on April 5, 2017.

The site choice is notable for investors in the region.  It is located in a key area of Alto Boquete that is suddenly seeing rapid development.

There is only one sizable road that provides practical access to the town.  It was transformed from a little two lane into a major four lane thoroughfare several years ago.  With most of Boquete’s in town property already built on, any enterprise that could use a little elbow room and lower property pricing than in downtown are eyeing the Alto Boquete commercial zone.  There are many new commercial centers, residential developments, restaurants, stores, and more emerging there.  The new road to Palmira and on to Volcan is to be sourced from this area and the new Boquete Convention Center will be on this road as well.  In addition, the new hospital and now the new University campus will be here.   You can expect this part of Boquete to be one of the most rapidly developed over the next many years.  However, with canyons on both sides, land is somewhat limited.  Expect investors to eye this zone as a solid bet for appreciation.

The new U.N.A.C.H.I. campus is just one sign of the changes to come in Alto Boquete.

Translated from Spanish from the Honorable Millo Walker Vasquez Boquete’s Mayor’s Facebook page, posted April 5, 2017:

“Delivery of order to proceed and the symbolic act of the beginning of the future university headquarters in Boquete U.N.A.C.H.I.

With the presence of university authorities, the Mayor of Boquete Emigdio Walker Vasquez, local authorities and Congresswoman, with a lot of excitement the order to proceed was given and the symbolic act of the beginning of the future university was in charge of the Academic Vice-Dean José Coronel.

The total building of the future university extension in Boquete will cost $ 3.5 million and starts on Wednesday, 5 April, with the first stage at a cost of $500,000.00, and will be built in Alto Boquete, Boquete District, district of economic growth with vision of higher education with quality.

Pope Francis became the first person to register for the 2019 World Youth Day (WYD)  in Panama  with the words: “That’s it, I’ve registered as a pilgrim on the journey to WYD Panama.”

He made the announcement in Rome, on Sunday, February 11, before hundreds of faithful who gathered in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square to attend the Angelus prayer. The Panama event will be from January 22 to 27, 2019.

The pontiff was accompanied by two young people representing the pilgrims and volunteers who will arrive in Panama.

“I invite all the young people of the world to join with faith and enthusiasm this event of grace and fraternity, whether traveling to Panama or participating in their local communities, ” he said.

The event is expected to  draw some 400,000 to Panama, which will delight tourism authorities but has raised  concerns with some over how a city of around 880,000 people with traffic-clogged streets and an overloaded transportation system,  will cope with a five-day  influx of almost half its population, Metro Line 2 will be only partially opened and the 2019 election campaign will be at full pitch.

WYD is a religious and cultural event that gathers young people from all over the world every three years.

It is a festive gathering in which hundreds of thousands of young Catholics congregate in the city chosen by the pontiff to host the WYD that will be filled with pilgrims and volunteers.

    Past roll calls
To date, there have been  13 World Youth Days. in 1987 in Buenos Aires (Argentina), 1989 Santiago de Compostela (Spain),1991  Czestochowa (Poland), 1993 Denver (United States),  1995  Manila (Philippines), 1997  Paris (France), 2000 Rome (Italy), 2002 Toronto (Canada), 2005 Cologne (Germany), 2008  Sydney (Australia), 2011 Madrid (Spain), 2013 Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), 2016 Krakow (Poland).

Young people who participate in WYDs are usually aged between 15 andm30. Most of them tend to be university students.

The record WYD  attendance was in Manila with 5 million young people, according to estimates by local authorities.

The most multitudinous European WYD was in Rome in the year 2000, with 2,100,000  young people.

Child rights group demands sex-ed action

    sex-ed-620x264.jpg

WHILE  a draft law on sex education sits s frozen in the  National Assembly The Committee on the Rights of the Child has recommended wide ranging changes to current rules.

Among its recommendations are the decriminalizing of abortion; to guarantee adolescents’ access to economic contraceptives.  and to restart the dialogue on sexual and reproductive health legislation.

The committee is composed of five independent experts whose job is to supervise the application of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified by Panama in 1990.

“The Committee is concerned about the suspension of the debate in the National Assembly of Bill 61, which calls for policies of integral education, care and health promotion, especially regarding sexual and reproductive health, “says a newly released document.

The text emphasizes the experts’ concern that girls under the age of 19 represent 18.7% of pregnancies reported in 2016. It also highlights the high dropout rates of pregnant children, the high number of those with venereal diseases and the lack of receptive health services for teenagers.

The discussion about sexual health, especially when it comes to minors, becomes quickly a debate of religious beliefs in Panama. Many say that sex education must be given at home.

Dr Orlando Quintero, director of the Health and Dignity Foundation of people affected by HIV / AIDS questions this thinking. “Unfortunately there is a mentality that talking about sexuality encourages young people to have sex. which is absurd. Who has the information, has the power. I’m not talking about being able to have sex, but the power to say No, “said Quintero.

“They think that their children are saints, and then young people do not dare to say anything for fear that they get beaten. They do not say anything, but they still have sex, infecting more people, “he said. He felt that young people should be able to get tested for HIV without their parents, but that all treatment must be executed with their knowledge, consent and participation since they are those responsible for the health of their children.

Quintero estimates that more than 90% of Panamanian homes lack adequate orientation and education

on sexual and reproductive health issues.  He supports the recommendation of the report to promote the legislation but is firmly against abortion.

The actions of commercial boat operators leading to deaths, overturned craft and overnight tourist strandings give a  special edge to Carnival weekend alerts from The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).

A warning of adverse sea conditions, on both coasts, was issued by the AMP on Saturday, February 10, and extends through Valentine’s Day, Feb.14.

According to the Authority, the notice is aimed mainly at small boats with outboard motors and pleasure yachts.

“To prevent, preserve and guarantee the security of citizenship at sea, the AMP recommends that boat captains and operators take into account the climatic conditions before sailing; If these are adverse, it is advisable not to sail until the weather improves,” says the alert.

Three people died in a recent overturning incident, and a group of tourists had to swim for 30 minutes and spend the night on an island in another.

Two pleasure boat captains have been charged with being impaired.
