  2. Slowing down and Discovering the thoughts that are running your life gives you the opportunity to use your mind to do things differently. Meditation works with commitment and discipline. Actually it is a very simple and natural process that we lose when we speed things up and fill our life with unconscious, repetitive thoughts and patterns that we may not know or no longer serve us. Meditation opens us to being more present and open to what is actually happening. It is very empowering in that it has the ability to heal and create joy and well-being as it leads into greater freedom of choice in a wider arena of possibilities. Meditation invites us to take one's seat with dignity. Each session we will listen to a teaching of Jack Kornfield, Tara Brach, Konda Mason, Devin Berry or Joe Dispenza. Followed by a group discussion, Ending with a meditation for the teaching. Anticipated total time of each session- 60-90 minutes. Group Organizer- Suzanna Clare, M.A., with a BA in Religious Studies and a M.A in Rehabilitation Counseling. A student of Psychology and Buddhist studies for 40+ years. Also a Certified Yoga & Pilates Instructor, a student & instructor of Somatic Movement and a former Lic. Massage Therapist in Florida, Certified to perform the 10 step Protocol of the Upledger CranioSacral Therapy System. To know more, go to Suzanna's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/susan.clare.75 and inquire at the email address below. *Note-"The teachings we will listen to are those I paid for & not ones that are offered for free on YouTube. A donation of $10 is requested. To become acquainted with any or all of these meditation teachers you can go to YouTube for their free public teachings and interviews." Weekly Group Meditation sessions are ongoing on Mondays and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m., in a home south of Ivan's in Alto Boquete. Group size is presently limited to 6 persons per session. *Meditation and the Quantum Body," will be the topic of my Chat at the Library on Thursday, March 14th. To register email Suzanna at suzeclare@gmail.com "Do know email is my sole source of communication. And that my intention is to create an active, in person Meditation group here in Boquete." Looking forward to meeting & meditating with You Soon. Gracias!- Suzanna

  5. LEARN A TAKE-AWAY PRACTICE TO "SHAKE OFF" THE ONGOING STRESSES OF LIFE. Announcing an upcoming workshop at The STUDIO: TRE: TENSION & TRAUMA RELEASING EXERCISES February 4th, Sunday 1-3 pm (includes a FREE follow-up class, Feb 8th, Thurs 2-3 pm) at THE STUDIO at The Haven Wellness Resort & Spa, located in Bajo Boquete Instructor: Joy Alexander $45 (price includes workshop & optional follow-up class) WHAT IS TRE? TRE® is an innovative series of exercises that help the body to release deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. Created by Dr. David Berceli, TRE safely triggers a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, and calms down the nervous system. When the 'tremor mechanism' is activated in a secure and controlled environment, the body is motivated to return back to a state of balance. TRE is a somatic body based practice especially effective for people suffering with stress, anxiety, trauma or PTSD. It doesn't require talking about an event, feeling or issue, therefore it overcomes the language barriers that can bring up added stress. TRE is based on the findings that stress, tension and trauma are both psychological and physical. The reflexive muscle vibrations in TRE are known to feel pleasant and soothing. After doing TRE, the majority of people report feeling peaceful with a sense of well-being. IN THIS WORKSHOP: • You will learn about neurogenic tremors -- our body's natural inbuilt recovery system. • What TRE is, why it was developed, and how it works. • TRE’s set of seven safe, simple tension & trauma releasing exercises that are designed to trigger the body’s ‘tremor mechanism’ • You will have an experience of activating the neurogenic tremor in a supportive group environment. • You will leave with a self-help tool that you can use to regulate your own nervous system -- as needed! IN THE FOLLOW-UP CLASS: This class will be a review and practice of the TRE exercises... with another opportunity to experience the 'tremor mechanism'. We will also discuss 'next steps' for those who want to continue with self-lead or guided sessions. About Joy Alexander Joy is the Head of The Studio's Yoga Program at The Haven Wellness Resort & Spa, and is passionate about what she does! She has been teaching yoga & meditation classes throughout the Boquete community since 2014. Joy's interest is the body-mind connection, especially how it relates to patterns of tension / trauma held within our physical structure. She helps guide others through combinations of awareness, movement, stillness, and breath to safely facilitate innate healing, clear the body's energetic pathways, and balance the nervous system. Born into a 'yoga family', Joy grew up practicing both yoga and meditation from an early age. (Her mother opened one of the earliest yoga studios in Southeastern Massachusetts.) She continued her studies in yoga... exploring a variety styles such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Kripalu and Bikram Yoga. However, it wasn’t until 2010 that she found and fell in love with the discipline of Ashtanga, deepening her practice even more. Now a registered yoga instructor (500 hr Yoga Alliance certification), she is realizing her dream in Boquete, Panama. Along with Yoga Certifications and an intensive 750 hour massage education, Joy has additional training in energy work and bodywork modalities including 120 hrs of Polarity Therapy, and Lomi Lomi Certification Levels 1 &2. Most recently, Joy completed a TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercise) Certification in 2022. She brings her knowledge of the body — both energetic and physical — into her teaching style. Si prefiere recibir los correos electrónicos en español, haga clic aquí.   AMIGOS DE ANIMALES BOQUETE PANAMÁ JANUARY 2024 NEWSLETTER   2023 IN REVIEW What a year of incredible accomplishments! Thank you to our amazing volunteers and to our generous donors. We couldn't have done all of this without you! • 3,602 animals sterilized (1,674 dogs and 1,928 cats) Our highest annual total ever! • Pleasures of Panamá fundraiser - raised over $27,000 • Pet food delivery program - over $14,000 of food was delivered to the more than 300 animals at our feeding stations • 5 away clinics - in Progresso, in Guaramal, in Potrerillos, and 2 in Volcan • 2 clinics in local schools - Volcancito school and Alto Quiel school • 2 mini cat clinics • 44 book corners set up in local schools • Year end fundraising - raised over $20,000 to fund 5 more school clinics   CLINIC MUSINGS FROM OUR PRESIDENT by Leslie Sherling Sometimes it's not just a spay and neuter clinic. Sometimes it is a place where miraculous things happen. At our November clinic, one of our collectors brought in several animals for sterilization. These animals come from the poorest of families, if they have a family at all. One of these animals was a very, very skinny, unhealthy looking dog. I have seen very few dogs this malnourished. Even though he was in bad shape, he had a gentle disposition and his tail never stopped wagging when he got attention from the volunteers. It was determined that he was not well enough to be sterilized. Usually he would be returned to where he came from - not a good situation Some of our volunteers took this dog home to nurse him back to health. Lucky, as he is now called, has put on weight and is thriving. We are expecting him at this month's clinic to get sterilized. Thanks Mari, Kevin, and Antonio for opening your hearts and your home. I love a happy ending!   ANNUAL TRAINING & VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION LUNCHEON Volunteers are the lifeblood of our clinic. Without our many very dedicated volunteers, we would not be able to do our very important work. This past Sunday, we held our annual volunteer appreciation luncheon. We started by showing a new training video and then served a lovely lunch of spaghetti, salad and garlic bread followed by dessert. The event was very well-attended with well over 100 joining us. Thank you to our incredible volunteers as well as a very special thank you to our kitchen rockstars, Sheila, Carl, Mike and Veronica!   VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NON-CLINIC TASKS We are reaching out to you today to ask for your help. Our organization is in dire need of volunteers to assist with various tasks that can be done from the comfort of your own home. We are looking for individuals who can commit to 4-6 hours per month to help us with the following: • Writing stories for our newsletter • Creating content for our calendar • Drafting fundraising and volunteer emails • Tracking sign-in sheets for new volunteers • Maintaining our volunteer & overall databases • Maintaining our website If you are passionate about animal welfare and want to make a difference in your community, we would love to hear from you. No prior experience is necessary, and we will provide you with all the training you need to get started. Please contact us at volunteer@aadab.org to learn more about how you can help. We look forward to hearing from you soon! Sincerely, Leslie Sherling, President   ARTS & CRAFT MARKET Thank you again to our volunteers and vendors who came out. Thank you of course to all of the customers for making this event a success! The vendors brought beautiful products, the customers opened their wallets, and Amigos de Animales benefitted to the tune of $1,750. Special thank you to Sherry Shirritt, Jane Pahler, Sandra Wolf and Sheila Strunk for all the work you did behind the scenes to make this event happen. Contact Carol Cardinale-Santana at cardinalesantana@gmail.com for more details.   GET TO KNOW OUR AMIGOS DE ANIMALES FAMILY This month we're featuring a former Board member and current department head: Name: Sheila Strunk Your position/title with AdA: Kitchen Operations How long have you been working with AdA? Seven years. What is your background? I grew up all over the world as a child of a career military father. When I started my first career in I.T., I was transferred from the East Coast of the U.S. to Minnesota, where I met and married my husband Carl. After many years in Minnesota, we relocated to Arizona, where I owned and operated a real estate company until we retired and moved to Panama in 2015. Can you tell us a little bit more about what you do with AdA? Starting in 2017, I volunteered in the Recovery Department, helping to revive cats and dogs after their surgery to ensure they were awake and ready to go home with their owners. In November 2023, the manager of the kitchen area retired and I was asked to take over operating the kitchen to feed our volunteers and pet owners during the clinic day each month. Why would you encourage others to volunteer here with AdA? When my husband and I first visited Boquete in 2010, we were astounded by the number of homeless animals that were wandering around downtown, begging for food wherever they could. Since we moved full-time to Boquete, we have seen a tremendous reduction in the number of homeless animals, thanks in great part to the tireless efforts of Amigos de Animales. Click here for the rest of Sheila's story and more pictures on our website.   KIBBLE & BITS: • Food Drive: We are continuing to feed needy dogs and cats in Boquete at a cost of over $1,700 per month. They are available at the Animales table at the BCP Tuesday Market, at Mike's Global Grill or at the clinics. • Educational Outreach program: We are visiting local schools to educate students about proper care for their pets, and the importance of spaying and neutering animals. 16. VOTING IN 2024 U.S. FEDERAL ELECTIONS Your vote counts! Did you know that many U.S. federal elections for the House of Representatives and Senate have been decided by a margin smaller than the number of ballots cast by absentee voters? All states are required to count every absentee ballot that is valid and reaches local election officials by the absentee ballot receipt deadline. Follow a few simple steps to make sure that you can vote in the 2024 federal U.S. elections: 1. Request your ballot. Complete a new Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). You must complete a new FPCA after January 1, 2024 to ensure you receive your ballot for the 2024 elections. Submitting the FPCA allows you to request absentee ballots for all elections for federal offices (President, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives) including primaries and special elections during the calendar year in which it is submitted. All local election officials in all U.S. states and territories accept the FPCA. You can complete the FPCA online at FVAP.gov. The online voting assistant will ask you questions specific to your state. We encourage you to request your blank ballots be delivered electronically (by email, internet download, or fax, depending on your state). Include your email address on your FPCA to take advantage of the electronic ballot delivery option. Return the FPCA per the instructions on the website. The online voting assistant will tell you if your state allows the FPCA to be returned electronically or if you must submit a paper copy with original ink signature. If you must return a paper version, please follow the same instructions below for returning your ballot. 2. Receive and complete your ballot. States are required to send out ballots 45 days before a regular election for federal office and generally send ballots at least 30 days before primary elections. For most states, you can confirm your registration and ballot delivery online. 3. Return your completed ballot. While some states allow you to return your completed ballot electronically, others do not. If your state requires you to return paper voting forms or ballots to local election officials, you can do so free of charge at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, during normal business hours. U.S. Embassy Panama specific drop-off instructions: Upon arrival to the Embassy’s front gate, notify Embassy guards that you are dropping off voting forms or ballots. Guards will then escort or direct you to our ballot mailbox, located just inside the front gate. If it is more convenient, you can have a friend or family member drop off your voting forms or ballots at the Embassy on your behalf. You can also return your FPCA or ballot to your local election officials via international mail or professional courier service at your own expense. Research candidates and issues. Please see the FVAP links page for resources you can use to research candidates and issues. FVAP regularly sends information about election dates and deadlines through their Voting Alerts. Email vote@fvap.gov to subscribe or follow FVAP on Facebook or Twitter. Learn more at the Federal Voting Assistance Program's (FVAP) website, FVAP.gov. If you have any questions about registering to vote overseas, please contact the American Citizen Services (ACS) unit at U.S. Embassy Panama at Panama-ACS@state.gov. Remember, your vote counts!
