  5. We will celebrate the full moon this Wednesday, May 10 starting at 6 PM with a social gathering at the Fenix Cafe in the BCP building. Adult beverages, food and a drum circle contribute to the party atmosphere. All are welcome to join the drum circle regardless of experience. There will be a few loaner drums for those who don't have their own. This is a fun way to try something new and meet new people. The evening drum circle is in lieu of the regular 4 PM Wednesday meditative drum circle this week only.
  6. On Tuesday of this past week, my world was turned upside down! With my impending trip to Vegas to renew my Nevada driver’s license, I needed to see to having Buffy’s nails cut again. I had left them too long because she hates the process, but it is so hard for her to negotiate the tile with the long nails. I was leaving her with Ritch and he had asked me to take care of it. We went for our little walk and she was happy as could be, spry, in spite of her 16 and a half years. Then we went in and got ready to get into the car. She knew it was bad when I carried her to the car. She shook and fought me like never before as Ritch drove us the few blocks to the vet. These events had gotten so bad that we would need to put the muzzle on her so this time I went to get it to put it on in the car hoping that was easier. Doctor Chele was on her way out and couldn’t do it. When I got back to the car she was foaming at the mouth and acting very strange. I picked her up and got the window down but she had gone into an epileptic seizure. We took her home knowing the visit triggered the attack. I held her for hours and then we put her on our bed and took turns watching her. We crushed us a small amount of Valium as it said the vet would do and I massaged it into her gums. Ritch was waving his hand in front of her face and she had no blinking reflex. He told me how bad that was. We both had thought she was calming down and would go to sleep to recover. She had never had a seizure before. Ritch said we were losing her and I picked her up and her fluids were coming out and she was dying in my arms. I had no idea what to do. Ritch and I grieved together that night. He said he wanted to go like she did. I said, “What?” He said he wanted to go fast and he didn’t want to linger. He told me that night she was part of our family and he loved her and was going to miss her very much. He told me how lonely he was going to be when I went to Vegas to get my driver’s license. I offered to call people to stop to see him, but he didn’t want me to. I guess Buffy’s death was too much for Ritch’s heart because he died 17 hours after Buffy did. He died 15 minutes before we were to go to have her buried. He was dead within five minutes and the CPR I tried did nothing. I wasn’t able to save either of my two loves. I thank God that they both preceded me and Ritch did not have to deal with the sadness. We will have a memorial here in Boquete where he was loved by so many around the end of May after I have had a chance to get my act together. Thank you for all of the warm wishes and thoughts, most of all I need prayer. Please also pray that in the end, Ritch chose to believe in Jesus Christ as the son of God who came and died for our sins that we might have life everlasting with Him! all my love, marguerite
  7. David van Harn is a talented artisan woodturner who moved from Sonoma County, California to Boquete over five years ago, and shortly thereafter, purchased a small bench-top wood lathe. He learned to appreciate the beauty of tropical hardwoods from around the world when he worked at a Woodcraft store in Santa Rosa, California after retiring from a career in information technology and technical sales. When he moved to Panama, he knew that there would be beautiful tropical hardwoods locally available from the 2,300+ species of trees that grow in Panama and Costa Rica, one the most ecologically diverse regions in the world. Over the past five years, he has turned many species, and Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa - a true rosewood), and Kira (granadillo) have become two of his favorites. Artificial (chemical) finishes are not used except on bottle-stoppers, which are handled regularly in the kitchen. His standard finish is pure Brazilian carnauba wax, and some of the tropical woods polish up to an almost glass-like finish when this natural wax finish is applied with a buffing wheel. David's artistic woodturnings are available only at at the Tuesday Morning Market and private showings. Prices are much lower than in U.S. or European art galleries for similar items. Most of the his turnings are small, and will fit in with your luggage taking up very little space, so they make perfect gifts. . Typical selection at the Tuesday Morning Market (some of the above items have been sold.) Top and bottom views - clockwise from top left: 6" & 5" dia. Kira bowls - $40, $30 (Platymiscum pinnatum - local Panama wood) 2 - 6" Blue Mahoe bowls, 6" - $40 each ((Hibiscus elatus - the national tree of Jamaica.) He has visited every major reef system in Panama and has a scientific paper published in the Journal of Reef Encounters, regarding the el nino effect on corals at the Secas Islands., Did you know that corals have been reported to have been reduced by 50% in the Caribbean area of Panama during the past 30 years? Thankfully, although there has been widespread coral mortality, corals have found a way to adapt and survive the higher temperatures. Come and find out how they are doing it and what we can do to ensure the survival of one of the planet's greatest treasures. Richard Feynman, one of the world's emminent particle physicists, once said that if someone says they understand quantum theory, then they don't understand quantum theory. Well, Mike respectfully disagrees. If you've ever wondered what all the hoopla was about (the double slit experiment, Schroedinger's Cat, quantum entanglement, etc.), then this talk is for you. Mike will explain how the whole thing works, and do so without math. You'll leave this talk more informed about the strange realm of the quantums. Like science? This one's for you. The school feeds the students two meals a day and usually this is the only food the kids get. So if there is anyone that can find it in their hearts to provide milk it will be so appreciated. (We usually take two cases of milk at a time). Please let me know if you can get the milk and if you can deliver it or need me to pick it up. Thank you so much. Lyndia Smith Lyndia.smith@gmail.com
