  1. Family of the month - April 2016

    THE SANTOS FAMILY

    3680b456c0f54a5699ff4992065c05ce

The Santos family of six live in a riverside shack just outside downtown Boquete. They have no electricity, cook on an open fire, and depend on questionable water for their needs. Narcisio (46) earns a small wage when field work is available; his wife Vilma (38) has suffered from an undiagnosed illness for over a year. Their teenage kids all attend school; the two girls pictured (Griselda, age 16 and Yamileth, age 12) attend school through the generosity of a local expat who provides their school uniforms and books. Son Melvin (16) also attends school, and the oldest son Oliver (19) is able to get occasional work as a coffee picker. Despite their difficult living circumstances, the family is close-knit and proud of the good grades their children receive in school.

It is families like the Santos' who receive a monthly food supplement from Buenos Vecinos de Boquete. They, and over 100 other families, are the reason:

BVB is holding our May 14 fund raiser, "Tropical Treats," from 5:30 to 8PM at the Amigos de Animales Event Center. Purchase a ticket at Mail Boxes or at the Tuesday Market, and join your friends in supporting the important work we do for the community. Lots of food, plenty of beverages, valuable raffle opportunities, and a fun time guaranteed!

If you would like to help families like this and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated.

IF YOU PREFER TO DONATE BY CASH, Please contact Louise Orr (panamaleo@gmail.com) for arrangements.

When you make that important decision to help feed the less fortunate in our community, you have truly become a “good neighbor”.  When you donate $360 a year or $30 a month (about the cost of a daily latte), your name will be added to our “Coconut Foundation” as an acknowledgement of your concern and generosity.

Buenos Vecinos de Boquete’s wholesale purchase power enables us to furnish our clients more food than they could purchase on their own in the store with the same amount of money.

    Thank you!

  2. Susan Frank won the decorator bowl at the raffle drawing yesterday. She is happy and excited to be the owner of the beautiful bowl created and donated by Germaine Sturtz. Buenos Vecinos de Boquete appreciates all of the community support we receive to pay for our food purchases. Right now there are 107 clients that receive non-perishable food supplies from us. Watch for notifications of our next fundraiser, Tropical Treats, coming up on May 7th.

  3. This gorgeous decorative bowl was handcrafted by local artist, Germaine Sturtz. It has recently been displayed at Casa Decor with a $150 price tag. Germaine has generously donated the bowl to be raffled with the proceeds going to Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, the local food charity that provides food for over 100 families in our area. The raffle tickets will be on sale at the Mamma Mia benefit party tonight, the Chiriqui Storage Flea Market this Sunday and at the Tuesday Market this Tuesday. The drawing for the bowl will be held this Tuesday, April 5, at the Tuesday Market.

  5. March Family of the Month

    9ca67311248d4ac6ba4ceaf010827024

Diana and her sweet little boys are the focus of this month’s BVB outreach.  Single mom, Diana is 22 years old raising four-year old Brayan and two-year old Angel with the minimal support of $80 a month from the boys’ father and has no additional family support.  She and the boys live in a single 10 X 12 foot rented room for $45 a month plus utilities.

Angel was born with a severe cleft palate, as evident in the photos. He also has asthma which prevents reconstructive surgery at this time and adds an additional monthly expense for expensive medicine. The doctors are waiting for Angel to outgrow the asthma and will perform surgery when it is safe to do so.

Even though Diana has minimal financial support she has a lot of courage and the love of her two adoring sons. Brayan holds up his new toy to mimic his little brother’s bandaged lip.  Buenos Vecinos de Boquete hopes that you’ll support our mission to help feed families like Diana’s.

If you would like to sponsor a fanily, and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated.

To benefit Buenos Vecinos de Boquete

We will be watching the film "Mamma Mia" while we dance and sing along to those great ABBA hits that we love so much.  (The words to the songs will scroll at the bottom of the screen for those like me who are lyrically impaired).  We will have 2 screens.  I have timed each song so I know which songs will be the best to dance to.

This is a ladies only event so you are encouraged to use your creativity and to wear outrageous costumes to properly promote the silly factor.  Door prize for best costume.  This is an opportunity for women to engage in fun, nonsense and general foolishness.

WHEN:  Thursday March 31, 2016.  The social hour is from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.  "Mamma Mia" starts at7:00 and runs until 9:00 PM.  If a cab is dropping you off tell them to return for you at 9:00 PM.

WHERE:  At the home of Germaine Sturtz  #72 Brisas Boquetenas.  Directional signage will be on the light posts inside Brisas Boquetenas.  Our subdivision is 6 miles or 10 km south of Boquete.

COST:  A $10 donation to Buenos Vecinos de Boquete will be collected at the door.  One hundred percent of your donations will go to feed the needy, elderly and handicapped in our surrounding community.

PLEASE B.Y.O.B. and I will supply the mixes, ice, glasses and napkins.  The wonderful ladies of Buenos Vecinos will be supplying delicious appetizers.

All the attendees who bring one or more friends will be given a ticket for a special door prize.  So call all your girlfriends and join us in an evening of supreme enjoyment.

Support Buenos Vecinos de Boquete in February!

Buenos Vecinos continues to need your support. This small volunteer force channels every dollar received to the wholesale purchase of food, and then packs it and distributes it to more than one hundred of the neediest families in the community. Some of the faces of our food recipients are:

    • A young single mom with two toddlers, one with a severe cleft palate and asthma

    • A family of seven living in a bamboo hut with no electricity

    • A grandmother caring for her deceased daughter’s children and other family youngsters

    • An older partially-blind man living alone in the woods cooking on an outdoor stove

    • An elderly woman caring for her middle-aged mentally-handicapped daughter

Our clients are particularly needy. Please help!

    PLEASE SPONSOR ALBERTO'S FAMILY

    albertowithfamily.jpg

Meet and please help Alberto's handsome family! Three years ago, at the age of 40, Alberto suffered complete paralysis from the waist down after a crushing fall on a job site. He and his wife, Diosalinda, live in Boquete with their seven children, aged from 4 to 21. The oldest boy works in a local restaurant to help support the family. They have no electricity; hand-carry water for household needs, and live in a 10 by 20 foot wooden cabin.

Alberto has fair English language skills, having worked for expats, and will be interpreting at the upcoming eye clinic for local Panamanians and indigenous, sponsored by The Rotary Club. This proud, hard-working man's relatively prosperous large family is now reduced to limited means. Alberto receives assistance from Fundacion Pro Integracion (The Handicapped Center) with his transportation and physical therapy needs. He is an appreciative participant in their programs.

If you would like to sponsor this family, and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated.

Happy New Year from Buenos Vecinos de Boquete!

Best wishes for the New Year 2016 from the Buenos Vecinos de Boquete team of volunteers! As we begin another year of work providing food to the needy, we hope that you will remain mindful of the less-fortunate among us in our lovely Panamanian mountain environs. It often appears that world events are tragic and overwhelming; that we have no control over these situations. But, in fact, we do have the power to change lives right here in Boquete. The BVB food program is well-established, efficient, and effective. Join us in this New Year with your financial help; allowing us to continue making that positive change in our own community.

    Thank You.

Very happy woman with her new hospital bed.

In the last days of 2015 we were able to install a brand new bed thanks to the generous gift of Tom and Darlene Lindholm and Gijs and Hanny and some anonymous angels. She now can not only be cared for in comfort but she can also look out of the window.

    PLEASE SPONSOR ANA'S FAMILY

    468f25487956431fa45bccf61b9099c7

Your financial assistance will help Buenos Vecinos de Boquete provide food for Ana and her grandchildren. Recently, this 45 year old woman was left with seven children abandoned by their mother, Ana's daughter. The kids' father left the family some time ago.  The children range in age from 2 to 10. The oldest three children go to school.

The entire household lives in a one room cement and tin structure in the hills above Boquete. There is no electricity; water comes from an outdoor tap. It appears that before the intervention of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, Ana was asking for food handouts from her equally impoverished neighbors.

Local artist Germaine Sturtz has resided in Alto Boquete and been a member of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete for the last eight years.  In an effort to raise money for this worthy cause she has turned her talents to the design and creation of mirrors framed with seashells.  In addition Germaine has created jeweled tableaus designed to stimulate the observers imagination.  Both mirrors and jeweled tableaus can be purchased at Casa Decora in Alto Boquete.  Proceeds from the sales go to Buenos Vecinos de Boquete.

    PLEASE SPONSOR ESTER'S FAMILY

Ester is a single mother struggling to raise her five sons: from left to right is Fredy age 6, little Esequil age 1, Arnold age 3, Erik and Eduardo ages 9 and 12. They live in extremely poor conditions, but Ester makes sure her two oldest boys attend school. On this day, Erik and Eduardo were back from their school day, and all quickly changed into their best clothes for the photo, as they happily accepted their BVB bag of food items.

We would like to thank this month's BVB Corporate Sponsor, Sugar and Spice. Not only did this popular bakery/eatery donate a gift certificate to our Harvest Cook Off as a prize, but owner Richard Meyer ran an October/November promotion offering his customers delicious brownies or muffins in exchange for donated canned goods to be used by Buenos Vecinos de Boquete. Thank you, Sugar and Spice!
