Buenos Vecinos de Boquete Newsletter December 2017

It’s Almost Here!  Casino Night Sponsored by Boquete Has Heart

The excitement is building!  We are less than a month away from a fun evening sponsored by Boquete Has Heart.  Casino Night featuring casino games and auctions will be held at the Amigos de Animales Event Center in Alto Boquete 5-8 pm on Saturday January 13th.  Besides $500 in “funny money,”   attendees will receive appetizers, one complimentary drink and an opportunity to bid on silent and live auction items.  Exotic getaways, delicious restaurant fare, valuable gift baskets and services are being auctioned off to benefit Buenos Vecinos de Boquete and Amigos de Animales. Additional and exciting donations are still coming in; there’ll be something for everyone!
One of the most desirable donations is a two-night bed and breakfast stay for two at Hotel Bocas del Mar in Boca Chica. The stay includes a full breakfast and a sumptuous dinner package for both days. The total package is valued at $520.  Hotel Bocas del Mar was voted 2017 Top Small Hotel in Panama and has won the prestigious Trip Advisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award. This boutique hotel features luxurious bungalows with floor to ceiling windows and private terraces that look out into manicured tropical gardens and the islands of the Gulf of Chiriqui Marine National Park. Enjoy a dip in one of the hotel’s two infinity pools, or a marine discovery adventure from their dock in their excursion boat. These are just a few of the fun activities available. See more at www.bocasdelmar.com

Penny Gives BVB a Much-Needed Boost

    aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zZW5kY2FzdGxlLmNvbS9wdWJs

A long-time friend and supporter of BVB, Penny Barrett, came to our rescue last month when we shared with her our serious financial circumstances.  Simply put, for many months our donations have not been keeping up with our food expenses.  Besides her regular personal support of BVB, Penny used her community blog, News Boquete, to advise the community of our plight.  In response to that announcement, we received from far and near enough donations to help us buy food for all of our clients for one and a half months.  Thanks, Penny!!

Farewell to a Key BVB Member

We have seen some cherished members of our organization leave to make their homes elsewhere in the world.  Today we say a bittersweet goodbye to another dear friend and a prime mover in our BVB organization, Gail Cody.  As co-chairman of BVB she has been a pivotal person , providing administrative leadership, organizing and executing fund-raising activities and our all-important monthly food packs and deliveries to our clients. She has worn other hats in the Boquete community as well.  Boquete Hospice and Health, Fundacion  Pro Integracion (The Handicap Foundation), Bid4Boquete,  Boquete Jazz and Blues Festival,  and a large number of friends and neighbors have been recipients of her wise and energetic assistance.
Gail lost her beloved husband and soul-mate Denis when his heart failed a year and a half ago. They were a great and generous team giving their time and talents to anyone who asked.  Maintaining their large home high above El Banco by herself has been a heavy and lonely burden. So now she closes this chapter on her life in Panama and opens a new one as she reunites with her dad, son, granddaughter, sister and niece near Daytona Beach FL.  We send with her our profound gratitude, love, prayers and good wishes for a new life, full of fun and purpose.  Adios, Gail

Family of the Month- Thanks to the Bag Ladies and to Tom McCormack

It’s hard to imagine the living conditions of many of our BVB clients until you’ve seen it yourself.  They live in constructs of zinc, tarps, bamboo and scrap wood, with dirt floors and neither indoor running water nor electricity. The kitchen is generally a lean-to with an open fire and a large pot for cooking beans and rice. Often six to eight people are sharing a small room without windows. It is life at its most basic, so little things mean a lot.
Just a few weeks ago, BVB received a valuable shipment from a dedicated group of handicrafters in the US called the Bag Ladies.  They turn ordinary grocery bags into three by five waterproof sleeping mats/blankets.  These mats create a barrier between a cold dirt floor and a sleeping or sitting child or adult. They can even be used like a thermal blanket to hold heat in for those chilly nights during rainy season. Our clients were so happy to see these and to know these mats would provide some comfort to their families!
We also want to say a special thank you to local Tom McCormack, the tireless benefactor who oversees the shipment of containers from the US to David.  These containers are filled with prosthetic devices and hospital equipment and supplies for people in the Chiriqui Province and, this month,  these plastic mats for our BVB families!
Thank you Bag Ladies and Tom for your generous gifts!  You’ve made it a merrier Christmas for our BVB families.

If you would like to help our clients and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, we would appreciate your donation of any size. It is important for you to know that we are a small all-volunteer force with no administrative or overhead costs. Every dollar of your donation goes to the purchase or storage of food for our clients.

Buenos Vecinos de Boquete's wholesale purchase power enables us to furnish our clients more food than they could purchase on their own in the store with the same amount of money.

When you make that important decision to help feed the less fortunate in our community, you have truly become a “good neighbor”. When you donate $360 a year or $30 a month (about the cost of a daily latte), you will become a Coconut Foundation member as an acknowledgment of your concern and generosity.

Donate Online: http://www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com/how-you-can-help We use PayPal for easy and secure transactions.

If you prefer to donate by cash or local check, please contact Louise Orr panamaleo@gmail.com for arrangements.

  3. The Boquete community is a generous and supportive group of people. A little over a week ago Penny Barrett sent out a request to the Boquete community asking for financial help for Buenos Vecinos de Boquete. The response to her SOS has been amazing!

We have added 11 new Coconut Foundation members to our list in the last few days.  A Coconut Foundation sponsor is someone who donates $360 to feed a family for a year. You can find the list of these generous sponsors on our website:

We have also received smaller but equally important donations. No donation is too small and all are appreciated.

As Penny said in her SOS all of the money we receive is spent buying non-perishable food items for our 120 clients every month. Half of our clients are also clients of FPI, Fundacion Pro-Integracion, also known as the Handicap Foundation. We are truly grateful for the donations which we have received in the last week and for the faithful donations that are given to us throughout the year.

We would like to give a huge thank you to Penny Barrett for sending out the request for help and to the Boquete community for their generous response!

    Gratefully yours,

The Buenos Vecinos de Boquete Team

    Meet Julia's Family

Julia knows how to live with adversity. As a child she suffered burns that are visible even today.  It prepared her for what was to come when she became a mom to Misael. Little four-year old Misael was born with cerebral palsy and other health issues that have stunted his growth. But Julia and his stepdad Luterio meet the challenges that come with with round-the-clock care for a CP child. They also provide love and support for their other two children, two-year old Nina and six-month old Carlos. The family lives in a rented room for a dollar a day and their sole income is from the work that Luterio can find at nearby farms. The work opportunities are, unfortunately,  inconsistent so the family is grateful for the food assistance they receive from Buenos Vecinos each month. And they look to the Handicap Foundation (FPI) for help with some of their medical expenses, with physical therapy and social/emotional support. Together BVB and FPI address the critical needs of those who most require our help.

Buenos Vecinos de Boquete depends on your support to feed and nourish families like Julia’s.

    Meet Ariel and Ana's Family

    7fe05e497d09499b901cf10454ea2a84

Ariel and Ana live with their five school-age children in a humble little house outside of Boquete. This last summer Ariel became very ill with a life-threatening intestinal blockage which required immediate surgery.  After some serious complications, he is finally on the road to recovery.  However, the doctors have advised him that it will be a long recovery, lasting perhaps six months. In the meantime, Ariel is unable to support his family. To lighten this desperate burden, Buenos Vecinos has stepped in with temporary emergency food assistance.  Ariel and Ana are so grateful to receive this help when they need it most.  The children are also happy to see food arriving at their door. These smiling faces tell the story!

Buenos Vecinos de Boquete depends on your support to feed and nourish families like Eva’s.

    Meet Eva and Her Family

    315a24fcc57f4a0c984189a40e266a15

Even though Eva was pregnant with her second child, she was very excited a few months ago when she found a job cleaning once a week in Potrerillos, a short bus ride from her home.  With a little training she became quite proficient.  Her employer found her to be a diligent worker and an enjoyable companion. But with the recent birth of her daughter, Sophia, Eva could no longer work and provide a little income to help support Henry, her six year-old son, herself and the baby.  The children’s father does not help them and has moved from the area, so Eva has turned to Buenos Vecinos for the non-perishable food we supply on a monthly basis.

Eva and her little family share a three-room zinc-sided dirt-floor house with her cousin Marina, who has three children (but also no support) and with her aunt and uncle and their four children. The house has no indoor water or electricity.  But Eva has plans; she wants to learn a little English, gather more experience and eventually secure more housekeeping jobs. She hopes to someday build her own tiny bamboo house next to her aunt and uncle’s dwelling.  But for now, she is just grateful to have the housing assistance from her extended family and food from BVB.

Buenos Vecinos de Boquete depends on your support to feed and nourish families like Eva’s.

BVB Families Receive High-Nutrition Food (And YOU can help!)

A few years ago the BVB team met with a dietician to assess the nutritional value of the food we distribute. Our clients are very poor and most do not have electricity, so the food needs to be not only highly nutritious but also non-perishable. We have also learned that the food we provide must be something they will eat; when we introduce new food items we must often make suggestions on ways to make it more familiar and acceptable to family members.

Our items include KLIM, a fortified dry milk that was developed for use by soldiers in jungle climates. We provide rice and two varieties of dried beans that provide protein when eaten together. Other protein sources are canned fish, sardines, and canned meat. Also included are food staples like flour, salt, pasta, crema and cooking oil. Recently our clients have been receiving a vitamin enriched and fortified rice and soy product called MannaPack. We are so grateful for this generous and special addition to our provision, courtesy of Philip McGuigan’s charity Amigos de Boquete Foundation.

You, too, can help us nourish BVB families! Stop by Romero Super Mercado between 9 am and 1 pm on Saturday July 15th to support the BVB Food Drive as we gather specific non-perishable food items or cash donations. Check out the photo below to see what a family receives each month. BVB volunteers will be in front of the store to greet you and answer any of your questions.

    Family of the Month

Buenos Vecinos de Boquete provides non-perishable food on a monthly basis to over 100 families and individuals. Included in that count are 58 clients who additionally receive the services of the Handicapped Foundation (Fundacion Pro Integracion). Pictured here (in blue) is Elibia during a home visit by FPI volunteer Loesje.

Elibia was born with autism, cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder. She is now 16, and lives with her mother, several siblings and an extended family. Her father is deceased.

The food provided by Buenos Vecinos de Boquete (BVB) takes some of the financial pressure off Elibia's family, who are obviously burdened with the care of this young woman. This food is also nutritionally valuable to the family, particularly with many children to feed. Fundacion Pro Integracion (FPI) steps in with physical therapy, necessary medical transportation, and assistance with medicine. Together our two organizations address critical needs of some of the community's most needy members. We hope you will decide to support our efforts.

If you would like to help families like this and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated.

-Chris and Justin at Big Daddy's for sponsoring the June BVB Restaurant Program.  We went "fishing" for food donations and were not disappointed.

-Nancy and Nairn at N&N Catering who, with the help of Chris and Justin at Big Daddy's, created another benefit to support local charities.

-Susie Brymer urged her friends to donate to their favorite charities in lieu of birthday gifts for her, and BVB was included.

-Germaine and Richard Sturtz organized and conducted a garage sale whose proceeds went to BVB.

The Boquete multi-charity benefit event's new date and details will be announced soon and BVB will be an enthusiastic participant!

  15. Family of the month - June 2017

    Meet Elibia and Her Family

    Thank you!

  17. Family of the month - May 2017

    Meet Regina and Her Family

    854bad1aa9324bd7b5054969888d5eae

Regina knows how to take care of her six children. When her husband died, she knew that she would have to be very careful with her meager income and the food provisions from BVB to make this work. She also knew that it would take some self-sacrifice and creativity to realize her ultimate goal of getting each of these children educated. The owners of the Boquete farm where Regina and her children live have honored the memory of her husband by allowing her to live in this two-bedroom wooden house rent free until the last child has graduated. However, to protect the integrity of their crops, they don‘t allow her to raise produce on the property, only chickens, her primary source of protein for her family. Regina works three days a week for $8 a day to make $96 a month. But she pays $80 in transportation costs to get her children to school and $12 a month for utilities each month, leaving nothing for food or clothes. So she and her fifteen year old daughter, Estafani, with the donation of a sewing machine, some cotton fabric, and an ironing board and an iron, are starting up their own little cottage industry: they make traditional Ngobe dresses and sell them to friends and family in their community. This wise and dedicated woman is raising happy, healthy, well-adjusted kids who know she is showing them something truly valuable. Only four of the six children are pictured here because two elementary school students were still in class.

If you would like to help families like this and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated.

Family of the month - March 2017

    Meet Jeany and Her Family

    1a8d0b3471334b03b149dca2ace22064

Tiny Jeany is three years old, but she is still no bigger than her two year old brother. This little spark plug smiles and laughs with family and friends and brightens everyone’s day. She lives with her six siblings, her aunt and her Grandma Ana is a one-room cement block structure far up the mountain from Boquete.

There is no electricity nor running water in the house. Living almost within a cloud forest, this family is often cold and wet and depends on the outdoor cook stove for warmth. Jeany and her brothers and sisters were first abandoned by their father when she was only two years old; tragically, her mother also abandoned the family a few months later, leaving them all in the keeping of their grandmother.

To make room for everyone in the house, Grandma Ana now sleeps in the chicken coop at night. She has told us that she is glad for help in the form of monthly food deliveries from Buenos Vecinos that include the nourishing MannaPack supplemented rice from the Amigos de Boquete Foundation. The family also cherishes the soft warm hats, sweaters and blankets lovingly provided by the Boquete Knitters and Quilters.

If you would like to help families like this and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated.
