BVB Bake Sale at the Health Fair

On October 14th BVB conducted a bake sale at Boquete Health and Hospice’s second annual Health Fair at the Boquete Fairgrounds. Not even rainy weather could dampen the spirits of health-providers and vendors or the enthusiastic crowds who enjoyed the demonstrations, mini-seminars and free health screenings. Buenos Vecinos volunteers and supporters sold enough baked goods and sandwiches to sponsor a needy family for a whole year. Thanks to Boquete Health and Hospice for their gracious invitation to participate in this important event.

Family of the Month - Meet Yeisel and her Family

Yeisel, eleven years old, lives with her parents and four siblings in a modest house on the coffee farm where her father works. Last year she suffered a serious accident. The damage to her spine affected her mobility and now, even though she can walk, her gait is uneven and she must soon undergo surgery and fittings for a brace. Although her once-a-week physical therapy session is provided at no cost to the family, they are still responsible for the expenses of transportation and medicine. Pictured here are Yeisel, her younger brother Sebastian, her little sister Keisel, and her mother Norissa. Norissa expressed her gratitude for the help and support from FPI (The Handicap Center) and for the monthly bags of food from Buenos Vecinos.

A Big Thank You to the Boquete Community!

Our latest Buenos Vecinos Food Drive in front of Romero’s Food Market in Boquete August 18th was a great success, thanks to generous community and even tourists who stopped by to learn more about our food charity and to donate cash and selected non-perishable food items. By the end of the day, BVB had collected enough to support one of our needy families for more than a year. We appreciate your big hearts!

We want to also thank those Coconut Foundation Members who recently renewed their annual pledges to support BVB for a minimum of $360 a year. And hats off to N & N Catering (Nairn Cutten and Nancy Halbert) who donate all of the profits from their catering jobs to Buenos Vecinos and two other deserving charities. Their substantial donation means that our clients like the Family of the Month featured below will continue to find BVB groceries at their door throughout the year. BVB could not exist without this kind of support. Thank you!

Family of the Month - Meet Benilda´s Family

A large tree hides this bamboo house from the road and the outside play area is worn down to the dirt by many feet. The family who lives here, Benilda and her eight children still miss the father who abandoned them more than a year ago. Benilda struggles to find work, but earns only $50 a month cleaning houses and ironing clothes; $32 of those dollars are already designated for monthly rent and water.

Her oldest child, 18 year-old Alexander, is now in trade school learning how to be an electrician. He wants to help his family, and he is optimistic that he’ll be successful. His sixteen year-old sister, Yamileth, will finish high school next year. She wants to learn accounting so that she can help support the family, as well. Her fourteen year-old sister, Yaneth, has confessed with a smile, her own vision of someday owning a beautiful dress. The other children, Reinaldo, 12, Juan, 10, Jeronimo, 9 and Maria, 7, also attend school.

Six year-old Jhahicha is very excited to start school next year when she will proudly wear a uniform like her brothers and sisters. Until then she spends her days at home with her mother. When Mom works, a sibling stays home with Jhahicha.

The family rushed inside the house to find their best clothes before we took the accompanying photo. Benilda said that the food Buenos Vecinos donates to their family “is a great blessing and she is very grateful.”

  4. Family of the Month-  August 2018

    Meet Osiris and Noel

Osiris, Noel & Elidia (Medium) (1).JPG

Families care for one another and, in this case, a strong woman has stepped forward to care for two generations of family members.  Elidia takes care of her daughter and her two grandchildren, Osiris, a 13 year-old girl, and Noel, an 8 year-old boy.  All three suffer from developmental delays.  Elidia also raised her husband’s youngest children from his previous marriage after his wife passed away, and now Elidia helps care for two of their children.  Elidia’s husband is a trusted worker on the finca where the owner provides this family of nine a two room house with running water. The finca is an ideal setting for these four youngsters to explore and to play together.  Osriris and Noel receive their formal education with the assistance of a teacher for the handicapped but, because their developmental delays are so severe, there is little advancement.   Elidia also makes sure they have social activities and educational stimulation every Saturday at Fundacion Pro Integracion (FPI) also known as the Handicap Center. Buenos Vecinos works closely with FPI to make sure Elidia and her family get their monthly allotment of non-perishable food, and she expresses her gratitude for the help BVB provides.

If you would like to help families like this and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated.

What is a Buenos Vecinos de Boquete Food Drive and how can you help?

BVB conducts a Food Drive at Romero's twice a year with the store’s generous cooperation. We staff an outside table and display the foods that we provide our clients, and we greet the public with ready smiles and bi-lingual fliers. e0db8ca9-ca18-4457-95b1-62fe334a9e1a.jpgOur presence at Romero’s is important in reminding the entire community of the very real needs of our clients.

Local Panamanians shop in the store and return with the same basic food items they buy for their own families to give Buenos Vecinos as a donation. The expats and visitors generally give us cash; they understand that financial assistance goes a long way, because BVB purchases food wholesale, and our administrative costs are minimal.

How can you help? Come by Romero’s on Saturday August 18th 9am-3 pm. Look for our volunteers in blue. Or if you want to make a donation online by PayPal, visit out new website www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com. Donations can also be made locally by contacting Louise Orr at panamaleo@gmail.com.

Win a Beautiful Prize at the TMM

Look for the BVB Table at the Boquete Tuesday Morning Market to buy raffle tickets for beautiful home décor pieces. The proceeds will provide non-perishable food for some of the area’s neediest families.

Sylvette Day, a long-time and energetic member of our organization, is also a skilled quilter who has designed and created some of the area’s most treasured quilt-art pieces. The raffle item she has created for Buenos Vecinos is a 60”x60” quilt fashioned from 100% cotton Indonesian batiks. This rich, exotic quilt would look great as a wall-hanging, a decorative bed cover, a TV-watching throw or simply draped over an armchair.

Germaine Sturtz, a long-time and generous member of BVB is also a very talented designer. She has crafted another of her stunning shell-encrusted mirrors for this raffle. The brushed-metal frame features sea shells in one corner. The finished piece measures 21” X 25,” and weighs about five pounds. A focal point for any room, this beautiful mirror is going to attract a lot of attention in your home.

The prizes will be announced at the September 25th TMM and the winners need not be present to win.

    Family of the Month
    Meet Ana Elizabet

When the families of Fundacion Pro Integracion gather on Saturdays to provide social interaction and support for their handicapped member and for one another, Benita makes sure that her oldest child is there to join in. Ana Elizabet was born 19 years ago with cerebral palsey. Although she is wheelchair-bound and cannot speak, Ana understands what people tell her and responds with a smile and wonderfully expressive eyes. She is a portrait in joy.

Ana and her four younger brothers and parents live in a one room house for which they pay rent and electricity. The other biggest expense, besides the anti-seizure medicine Ana must have twice each day, is food to feed the family. Benita explains that the food Buenos Vecinos de Boquete (BVB) provides each month helps them meet those needs and they truly appreciate it.

Look at Our New “Face to the World”

You can now view our brand new website at www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com. Gijs Hoogerkamp and Ivan Gonzalez of Chiriqui Media Factory donated the design and launch of our new site and we are very grateful for their skill and expertise.  Besides the new look, we are pleased to announce the addition of a new feature that allows our donors to select a recurring monthly payment Pay Pal donation. Please remember that an annual $30 monthly donation insures one of our families the supplemental food they need for a year.

Thank you Germaine and Richard Sturtz

Our tireless volunteers organized and conducted a multi-donor rummage sale from the home of Germaine and Richard Sturtz in Las Brisas this last month.  Proceeds from their and other BVB volunteers’ hard work created enough support to sponsor three families this next year! Job well-done!

Up in the mountainous rural area, where sugar cane fields and vegetable gardens grow, live the hardy people who live off their machete and harvesting skills.  Edilberto, twelve, and Jon, almost two, belong to a family like this. They, their four brothers and parents live in a zinc and bamboo house poised near the ridge of a canyon.

Edilberto looks up to his two older brothers, Adrian, fifteen, and Jean-Carlos, thirteen, because they can help their dad harvest sugar cane, tomatoes and chayote when they are not in school. Edilberto cannot perform these chores because he has juvenile arthritis which limits his mobility and requires frequent visits to the local clinic for medicine to ease his pain.

So Edilberto is left at home to care for his three younger brothers, Joel, five, Abigal, three, and Jon, whenever their mom is needed to help harvest, or to walk down into the village for groceries. Her outdoor wood cook-stove is constantly going to provide meals for this hungry family.

Mom, Elena, tells us that she is proud of her boys.  They are healthy and happy, and they are getting better school grades each year.

If you would like to help Ediberto and Jon and their family, or families like this, please consider a donation to Buenos Vecinos de Boquete today.

  13. Meet Abraham and His Family

In the Volcancito area, Abraham and his wife Felicidata raise a large family with kids ranging from eighteen to three years old.  Abraham works as a maintenance man at a nearby business, and Felicidata handles the domestic work of this big family. The older children attend school, and get good grades they proudly tell me!

Felicidata admits that with eight children, not all of them favor the nutritious Manna pack provided by Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, but that most of them enjoy it, and she believes the product contributes to the overall good health of her family. The other food items contributed by Buenos Vecinos are eagerly anticipated each month.

Pictured in the photo are Abraham and Felicidata and their children: Daira (18),  Edgar and Belisario (13 and 12),  the twins Marzuela and Macario (11), Rene (9), sweet little Christina (7) and baby Abraham, a growing 3 year old.

Buenos Vecinos and Amigos de Animales were the big winners at the Casino Night fund-raising event sponsored by Boquete Has Heart.  BVB raised enough money to support ten of its existing client families for another year, and AADAB raised enough funds to help spay and neuter hundreds more animals in the  Boquete area. Thanks go to the attendees who filled the Animales Event Center and to our generous donors who gave us over fifty fabulous silent and live auction items.  If you were not there, you missed a chance to win exciting tours and getaways to destinations all over the world including Spain and Bonaire, fun adventure packages including a sports fishing day tour, hotel and restaurant certificates, catered parties, offers for health and beauty services, valuable memberships and original artwork and crafts.

    Best Wishes to Karen Hill

Karen Hill, long-time and valuable member of Buenos Vecinos leaves us this week to begin her next adventure in Bend, Oregon.  We will miss her warm smile and her remarkable dedication to helping build the BVB organization and make it run more effectively.  Karen has also played a pivotal part in the Boquete Health and Hospice organization where she has helped develop many important programs.  She and Craig will leave a void in the Boquete community, as well.  Farewell and thank you, Amiga!

    Family of the Month Update

    aida2013aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zZW5kY2FzdGxlLmNvbS9wdWJs

    2013                                                2017

Here’s an update on Aida’s family who were featured in one of BVB’s first newsletters in 2013.
Five years ago, Aida, then 65 years old, was caring for her two grandchildren Danila, then 11, and Davis, then 9 years old, after their mother died.  Aida also took on the responsibility for three great grandchildren Yorlanis 4, Cyndil 5, and Santiago who was 3 years old.  Aida made a home for them in her cinder block house located in a mountain village above Potrerillos. The outdoor kitchen featured a wood-burning cooking area and, with all those mouths to feed, the kitchen was in continuous operation!  When Buenos Vecinos started making food deliveries,  Aida was especially grateful, since she was not yet eligible to receive the  $100  government stipend for Panamanian residents who are 70 years or older.
Aida now receives that stipend and it helps, but five growing children eat a lot of food! Aida’s health is deteriorating and her energy is flagging, but she is determined that all of her charges are attending school and achieving good grades. During the summer, the two oldest boys work at a trapiche (sugar mill) making sugar blocks from sugar cane juice.  With only this limited income and her pension, the amenities and the challenges of daily living have not changed very much for Aida’s family. However, Buenos Vecinos has watched this family grow stronger and more energetic year by year.  Good nutrition and Aida’s unwavering love and care for this family are the key ingredients that make it all work.
