Out of Sight, But Not Out of Mind

The beautiful and lush backdrop of trees, flowers and rolling hills in and around Boquete charm our visitors and expatriate residents. The many local activities, events and amenities provide them with diversions and recreational opportunities. There is, however, more than just this idyllic life in the western highlands of Panama.

At the outskirts of our community and in the hills just above the city are individuals and families who live in grinding poverty. Like Hernan, in his early 70’s who has continuing major health issues and can no longer work. He lives alone with his dogs in a bamboo shack far from town and neighbors. He cooks over an outside wood stove and draws water from a nearby stream. He and many others like him need the kind of help that Buenos Vecinos de Boquete provides. Hernan is one of more than 115 clients Buenos Vecinos de Boquete (BVB) assists each month with supplemental non-perishable food allotments.

BVB volunteers who deliver this food on a monthly basis get to know their people. Besides the fun of chatting and visiting with them, volunteers get to check on their clients’ safety and health to assess what else they may need. You can view the video/slideshow that features a monthly food packing session and a BVB volunteer home visit to a client on the front page of our website at buenosvecinosdeboquete.com

The First Annual Potrerillos Arriba Venta de Patio

On Saturday March 11th Buenos Vecinos invited its fellow non-profit organizations, The Boquete Knitters and Quilters, The Boquete Rotary, and Amigos de Animales to join them at a new venue for a joint patio sale. The setting was the covered basketball court in Potrerillos Arriba. Residents from this rural community and outlying areas were thrilled with the number, quality and affordable prices of the sales items. Their happy faces told us that virtually everyone walked home with a treasure. The organizations were also happy with the impressive turnout and with their individual sales proceeds. For instance, Buenos Vecinos made enough to underwrite the monthly food allotments of two and a half families for a whole year!

    Family of the Month

Tiny Jeany is three years old, but she is still no bigger than her two year old brother. This little spark plug smiles and laughs with family and friends and brightens everyone’s day. She lives with her six siblings, her aunt and her Grandma Ana is a one-room cement block structure far up the mountain from Boquete. There is no electricity nor running water in the house. Living almost within a cloud forest, this family is often cold and wet and depends on the outdoor cook stove for warmth. Jeany and her brothers and sisters were first abandoned by their father when she was only two years old; tragically, her mother also abandoned the family a few months later, leaving them all in the keeping of their grandmother. To make room for everyone in the house, Grandma Ana now sleeps in the chicken coop at night. She has told us that she is glad for help in the form of  monthly food deliveries from Buenos Vecinos that include the nourishing MannaPack supplemented rice from the Amigos de Boquete Foundation. The family also cherishes the soft warm hats, sweaters and blankets lovingly provided by the Boquete Knitters and Quilters. Buenos Vecinos de Boquete depends on your support to feed and nourish families like Jeany’s; go to our website at www.buenosvecinosdebouquete.com and discover how you can help now!

    Family of the Month

    november family

Rainy season in the Boquete area means more indoor activities and pastimes for many of us, but for Orlando and his family, this is a season of even greater hardship. As a farm worker, making a monthly average of $120, rainy season is a time when work is scarce and so are the wages to support a family of eight. Though they pay no rent for their wood and zinc house and have no electricity, they must make enough to feed and clothe everyone. He and Adelina send four of their older children to school and look to a better future for them. Go to our website www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com to see how you can help Orlando’s and other BVB families.

Meet Wilberto and his mother Bertina

Wilberto, 46, has been bed-ridden and living with his mother in Potrerillos Abajo ever since he was shot and partially paralyzed in a robbery attempt at Wilberto’s place of business. On that day he lost his mobility and his livelihood. Friends and family have rallied around him to help him find a hospital bed and to get him to doctor’s and physical therapist’s appointments. Now he needs a wheelchair, which he hopes “to borrow for a short time”. Wilberto says he is determined to walk again, and to work again to help support his mother. Wilberto and his mom are only two of the many clients you can help feed every month.  Support the BVB non-perishable food program today.

Her daughter passed away 4 years ago and Migdalia continues to work with the FPI community, now over 60 members. She helps with making medical appointments, obtaining medicines and arranging hospital visits.

Physical Therapy is now provided by volunteers. Most handicap members are poor and require almost constant care.  BVB provides monthly food to them. We use their facility for our monthly meeting and food packing. Migdalia is a great help interviewing FPI members and other families in the community for BVB.

FPI can always use volunteers and donations, stop by on a Saturday 9-1pm and meet some incredible members of our community.

If you would like to help families like this and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated.

    A Successful Tropical Treats Event

Thanks to raffle and food contributors and enthusiastic party-goers, BVB’s mid-May’s fund-raising event brought in enough funds to provide almost a whole month of support for all of BVB’s one-hundred and ten families! Tina LaPorte won the grand raffle prize, a lodging and dining package from Hotel Bocas del Mar. Brian Christofferson won the white-water river rafting tour from Boquete Outdoor Adventures, and Bonnie Williams won the bird-watching tour and lunch from Craig Bennett and Karen Hill. The Panama Red Rum door prize-winner was Cynthia Dunne.

    BVB Volunteers Lead Fund-Raising Efforts

Germaine Sturtz, one of the many creative and generous BVB volunteers, raised enough money through her jewelry sales, her annual “Mama-Mia” dance party and the raffle of her hand-crafted metal bowl last quarter to feed one BVB family for an entire year. Germaine and her husband Richard champion even more BVB families throughout the year.

Early this year Sylvette Day and Johnnie Fernandez created a magnificent quilt which Sylvette and others raffled off to garner enough proceeds to support four BVB families for a year. Sylvette’s tireless pursuit of sales for all of our raffles has won her the title of “ BVB raffle queen”. She also provides more support to BVB clients every month.

    Meet Dallys del Carmen Dennis

    315509b3cce74fae84dee37887356914

Please meet Dallys, a valuable part of the work we do at Buenos Vecinos de Boquete. She is the Admistrator of Amigos de Boquete (not to be confused with Amigos de Animales), and has been there for over ten years. Like Buenos Vecinos, Amigos de Boquete is a food program serving the community. At AdB, the focus is on school children in thirteen local primary schools, which are provided a fresh hot meal daily. Because of her unique position in the community, and the overlapping goals of our two charities, Dallys manages the distribution of Buenos Vecinos food to twelve of our families. The majority are handicapped, indigenous, and many are single mothers.   Dallys and her assistant, Madelaine are busy ladies!

They work under the guidance of local resident, Philip McGuigan, whose family's foundation not only finances Amigos de Boquete's school food program, but who also regularly brings in containers from the US with vital supplies for many charitable organizations working in Chiriqui, including a rice supplement that benefits food programs like Buenos Vecinos de Boquete.

When she's not visiting all those schools and managing the cooks responsible for the daily hot lunches, she can be found supervising a lively bunch of children with their school homework and computer use. Stop by and say hello to this whirlwind of a woman with the big smile and kind heart; Amigos de Boquete is located in the Alto Dorado shopping mall. Check out their website: www.amigosdeboquete.org
