A note from Susan Peterson about the sale:
"Although a very chaotic scene, we sold over $8,000.00 on Saturday and over $2,300.00 at the pre-sale for our volunteers on Friday as well as over $5,000.00 through internet and direct pre-sales from January 1 until March 17th, so we are fortunate to have a good amount of funding to start the year. We have been blessed with many wonderful volunteers, generous donors and a multitude of buyers to make our sale a success. Thank you for participating and supporting our cause. We have many racks of clothing to sell at the end of this week and continue to receive additional sale items, so do stop by and see what might be of interest."

This is a complete set of silverware for 8 persons. There are actually 9 teaspoons and no missing pieces. Set contains 8 knives, 8 dinner forks, 8 salad forks, 9 teaspoons, 8 soup spoons, 8 tiny spoons (?), 8 other type of spoon, and lots of extra serving utensils like pie servers, gravy ladle, etc, etc..
This set was donated to the Handicap Foundation. We really don't know much about it except that the asking price of $50 is much less than you can buy lower quality silverware anywhere else.
Asking $50. All proceeds go to the Handicap Foundation.
Email pjbarrett@aol.com to buy.

The sale at the Handicap Foundation (FPI) on Saturday was a huge success. All previous records were broken within the first hour.
Now, here's the thing. There's still a lot of stuff left over and a bunch of new stuff came in too late to sort and price. And new stuff is still coming in.
We expect a lot of things will be brought in from the many moving sales in town.
Although all the volunteers are pretty much exhausted, the decision was made to continue the sale during regular hours at the Handicap. We can do that with the full-time employee, Migdalia and a handful of volunteers. So, the sale continues . . .
Thursday (3/22) 10-3; Friday (3/23) 10-3; Saturday (3/24) 9-12
The Handicap Foundation is located just north of the new policlinic (under construction) and across the street from Chopsticks Chinese Restaurant in Alto Boquete.

This could be the only RV park in Panama. Know of any others?
When I was at Las Lajas Beach last week I discovered an RV park right on the beach. Turn right at the end of the road as if you are going to the Beach Resort, and there it is. First time I've seen it. We also occasionally have RV's stop by Chiriqui Storage to park for a few days. We can offer them water, electricity and wi-fi and the locale is convenient to both Boquete and David.

Neil Howell is a visual artist from Calgary, Alberta.
His paintings sell for thousands of dollars in art galleries in both Canada and the U.S. He painted the American Indians extensively including Chief Dan George, Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Red Crow, etc. The below web page features 484 of his paintings including the one we have for sale.
http://www.billhowell.ca/Neil%20Howell/_Neil%20Howell.html
The Handicap Foundation is offering a signed original oil painting by Neil C. Howell. The gallery price tag is still on the back and lists the painting for $1700.
Here is the link to the photo of this painting on the above web site:
1993 Laura Howell - Comox Band.jpg
Laura Howell is apparently a member of Neil Howell’s family and is participating in an Indian dance ceremony.
The frame measures 23” x 31”. The matting is a linen material. The actual painting measures 16” x 24”.
Remember, this is an original oil, in good shape, signed by the artist, originally listed for $1700.
It is a great bargain being offered by the Handicap Foundation for $180. Email pjbarrett@aol.com for information or to purchase.

This organization runs in the red every month. The cost for the spay clinics is at least two or three times what is brought in by charging the folks who are capable and willing to pay the small fee.
The deficit has to be made up with fundraisers and donations. God bless these volunteers for finding a unique and fun way to raise money.

Not to be confused with "Olga's Restaurante" in the Alto Dorado plaza in Alto Boquete.
Actually, the real name of the Bajo Boquete Olga's (and the name on the sign) is "Punto de Encurentro"

There are many, many ambassadorial positions going unfilled even though quality people have been nominated. Panama is way down the list of priorities from Germany so it may be years before we get a new ambassador. Inquiring minds can maybe google and find out why there is such a roadblock.

It's important to note that these two sales are not equivalent. At one there are 14 gringo families selling stuff at gringo prices.
You should see the Handicap Foundation building. It's packed -- every inch has shelves and tables loaded with bargains. This is the sale the local population will go to and this is the sale I will patronize.
It's impossible to calculate the impact of the private sale on the fund raising success of the Handicap Foundation sale. However, the fact remains that we asked Pat Mains last year to please not again schedule her sale on the same day as the Handicap Foundation sale and (I believe) she agreed. Yet, it was done again and done long after the Handicap Foundation had put their event into both the Ning and Chiriqui.life calendars.

I believe both McDonalds and the cafe at Price Smart give 25% discount even though they are only required by law to give 10% as fast food joints. The best deal in town is the pizza at Price Smart. With the discount it's about $8.50 for a 16" or 18" pizza and the quality is very good.

Pretty tacky to run this sale against a major charity event of the same nature, imo.
This is the second time this year that it has happened. Could it be coincidence??

One thing that I've always been curious about is how Alan Handt was able to practice medicine here, or even call himself a Doctor.
Dr. Handt had a waiver from the Panamanian government to practice medicine here -- it might have been the only waiver ever granted.

Susan Peterson is the heart and soul of the Handicap Foundation (Fundacion Pro-Integracion) located in Alto Boquete. I asked her to write a short blurb about the Foundation to help me advertise the huge Venta de Patio (Yard Sale) coming up next Saturday. Here's what she wrote as well as a little ad for the sale:
The Handicap Foundation of Panama (Fundación Pro Integración de Panamá) was established with funds raised by the 20-30 Foundation Telethon in 1983, but the Boquete chapter was not formed until several years later when there was a serious need for financial support for handicapped children (primarily blind children) from low income families requiring medical attention. Members of the local 20-30 Foundation as well as individuals from both the medical and educational fields formed the Boquete chapter. Through the years, financial assistance has been extended to anyone of any age with a permanent disability from a low income family living in the District of Boquete. We are able to provide wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, hearing aids, transportation to medical appointments, physical therapy and special education classes as well as medicines not available through the social security or public health system. We enjoy a weekly social gathering for anyone in the community who is handicapped and would like to attend where we encourage involvement in different activities and offer a hot lunch before returning to their homes. We are able to operate as efficiently as we can from the hours of dedication of the most loving, caring volunteers in any organisation, and we receive our operating funds through fund-raising activities such as our Patio Sales, book sales at the Tuesday Morning Market, and raffles as well as the generosity of many faithful and caring donors. Our mission is to provide the best quality of life to our handicap members and their families as we are capable of doing. We appreciate your help. Thank you!"

I have two vacant bedrooms with two beds in each and can put up some of the party. I've gone on many medical missions and have also housed doctors who have come down with the Rotary Club from North Carolina to do missions here.
