Members of the engineers and doctors corp of the US armed forces will complete the humanitarian exercise "New Horizons" carried out in Panama coordinated by the Southern Command, reported the US embassy in the Panamanian capital.

The closing ceremony will be held next Thursday at the Marcos Alarcón school in the Metetí district of the province of Darién, on the border of Panama with Colombia.

The ceremony will have the participation of Panamanian Minister of Public Security, Alexis Betancourt; the Chargé d'Affaires of the United States embassy, Roxanne Cabral; and the representative of the Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM), Brigadier General Bryan Radliff.

The ceremony will also be attended by Deputy Ministers of Education and Health Ricardo Pinzón and Eric Ulloa, respectively.

In the framework of New Horizons 2018, US doctors and military engineers, with their Panamanian counterparts, performed surgeries, medical commitments and construction projects in the provinces of Darién, Coclé and Veraguas, from April to June.

In this new edition, 5 engineering projects were developed that included the construction of classrooms, bathrooms, a maternal center and a community center.

Moreover, medical tours were carried out in the three Panamanian regions, including ophthalmologic surgery and otorhinolaryngology.

New Horizons is an exercise conducted annually in different Latin American countries and the Caribbean, and took place for the first time in Panama in 1984.

Since 2000, Panama has received a total of seven New Horizons programs: Chiriquí and the Ngäbe-Buglé region (2003); Los Santos (2005); Bocas Del Toro (2007); Darién (2010); Colón (2013); Veraguas and the Ngäbe-Buglé region (2015); Darién, Coclé and Veraguas (2018).
