The Latin American Parliament and the Government of China signed a cooperation agreement today to promote cultural exchange between the Asian nation and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, the political regional forum reported today.

The agreement was signed by the president of the Latin American Parliament (Parlatino), deputy Elías Castillo and the vice minister of the Advertising Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Sun Zhijun.

One of the purposes of the agreement is the establishment of the China Pavilion with high technology in the building of the permanent headquarters of Parlatino, located on the banks of the Panama Canal, in the capital.

China will also provide cooperation in the installation of a virtual library at the agency's headquarters, one of the regionally important projects.

Currently in the Hall of China meetings of the Board of Directors of Parlatino with the participation of parliamentarians from 23 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are held.

Deputy Minister Zhijun recalled that the People's National Assembly of China is an observer member of Parlatino since 2004 and participates with important parliamentary delegations of his country in the General Assemblies of the regional legislative body composed of 23 countries.

As for the Chinese Pavilion in Parlatino, Zhijun said it is "to build a position for the foreign society to know about Chinese culture and strengthen cultural exchange between two geographically distant regions."

Deputy Castillo said that a "friendship agreement" was signed and that the doors of Parlatino will always be open for Chinese delegations "in order to boost cooperation and exchange between cultures," said a statement from the regional political forum.

Panama established on June 13, 2017 diplomatic relations with China and broke its relations with Taiwan, a decision that the Government of Taipei described as an "unfair action".
