Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela received Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Phan Dinh Trac today, with whom he agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation and offered the Panamanian logistics platform as a gateway to Latin America.

"Vietnam has been showing increasing interest in Latin America, and today we have been able to share how Panama through our air, sea, port and our strengths is ideal for Vietnam to strengthen its alliances with the entire region," said Panamanian Vice President and Foreign Minister Isabel de Saint Malo.

Panama has the largest registry of ships in the world and is also an important logistics platform mainly due to the interoceanic canal, which links more than 140 maritime routes and 1,700 ports in 160 different countries and through which about 6 percent of world trade passes.

De Saint Malo recalled that the visit of the Vietnamese politician is part of the so-called "Falcon Policy", a foreign policy strategy that seeks to bring Panama to countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, with which traditionally had no strong ties.

"Vietnam is a reliable friend and we are working for peace and development of the world, and the governments of Vietnam and Panama have several points in common, especially in the fight against corruption and in favor of transparency," said the Asian deputy prime minister at a public appearance with De Saint Malo.

During the meeting, both governments agreed to schedule future meetings and explored the possibility of increasing bilateral cooperation in agriculture, security and tourism, as well as visa exemption for tourists from both countries, according to the Central American country's Foreign Ministry.

After the meeting, Phan Dinh Trac met with the leadership of the ruling Panameñista Party (PP), which promotes a nationalist ideology and currently has a parliamentary minority.
