The Panamanian Secretary of Communication explained in a statement that the teachers will remain in Jordan for three months and will support Unicef by teaching Spanish and English to the children of the countryside, five days a week. "Cooperation is a primary objective of foreign policy that seeks to consolidate Panama as a relevant and vanguardistic actor in the 2030 Agenda, making its strengths and capabilities to face global challenges available to the world", such as the situation of migrants, highlighted the same statement. The teachers' trip takes place three months after the Panamanian President, Juan Carlos Varela, traveled to Jordan as part of an international tour and visited the Zaatari camp, which was built in 2012, 85 kilometers north of Amman and that has come to host more than 120,000 Syrian refugees. "This aid is part of the vision of the Government of the Republic to make Panamanian citizens responsible for the world as part of a country that promotes international cooperation, unity, dialogue and peace," the official note added. The sending of teachers is part of the so-called "Hawk Policy", a foreign policy strategy that seeks to bring Panama to countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, with which it traditionally had no strong ties. The measure, however, was criticized when it was announced last April by the teachers' union in the country for whom it is not consistent to send teachers abroad when there are serious educational deficiencies in the country. http://www.panamatoday.com/panama/panamanian-teachers-will-travel-largest-refugee-camp-jordan-tomorrow-7193 Quote
