Sunday Movie - 1pm at Fènix Cafe (BCP Center) - Waking Ned Devine (Ireland - 1998)

Recommended Posts

Our weekly matinee films start at 1pm at The Fènix Cafe - which is a restaurant, so please, don't bring outside food and drinks to the event.  Rather, support our film series by patronizing the Cafe, and be sure to say hello to Joy Alexander, the owner of the Fénix Cafe, and Ana, her helper.   Breakfast, lunch, popcorn and desserts - as well as coffee, espresso drinks, herbal teas, lemonade, beer, wine and mixed drinks - will be available for purchase.

Early birds get the comfy sofas, but if you like, you can bring cushions for the hard restaurant chairs, or folding/camp chairs for more comfort. There is no admission charge, but we ask for voluntary donations to support the program and help pay for the video system.

Upcoming films (we will send out details for each movie the week before the screening):

 - Due to a setback of four days with no internet due to a lightning strike near my house, I will finish my selection, and send out the list of upcoming films tomorrow (Saturday).

This week's film:  Waking Ned Devine   (1998 Irish Comedy - 91 minutes) Rated PG

Thanks to Penny Barret for suggesting this film, a perfect bit of comic relief that is a great change of pace after several weeks of more serious films.  Waking Ned Devine is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.  Set in Ireland, and filmed on the Isle of Man, it is particularly fitting for many of us in Boquete, because a lot of the characters are senior citizens.  Please join us for a couple of hours of great fun.

From RogerEbert.com:

Jackie O'Shea (Ian Bannen) and Michael O'Sullivan (David Kelly) hasten to Ned's cottage, to find him seated in front of the television set, clutching the winning ticket--and dead. The winnings, they are astounded to learn, are not several hundred thousand pounds, as they had assumed, but nearly 7 million pounds. A fortune! Alas, since Ned Devine is dead, the money will be recycled back into the kitty for next week's drawing.

Right? Not on your life. Jackie and Michael hatch a plan to fool the visiting official from Dublin, who after all has never laid eyes on Ned in his life (few have, outside of Tullymore). Michael will impersonate Ned. The whole town will of course have to be in on the scheme, and so Jackie and Michael draw up an agreement in which their friends and neighbors will join in the deception and share in the prize.

"Waking Ned Devine" opens with the news that someone in the Irish hamlet of Tullymore (population 53--uh, 52) has won the National Lottery. Who could it be? The locals, who have lived in one another's pockets for years, snoop and gossip, and seize upon the slightest deviation from habit as proof that someone expects a windfall. But there are no leads, and finally in desperation a chicken supper is held, at which the winner will perhaps be revealed. No luck. But one person doesn't attend the dinner: Ned Devine.
