Although he was a tall sturdy teen, he did not know how to swim. The girl who was initially in trouble, was rescued, coughing up water. It seems by report it was a rip current that swept her off her feet. The young man who went to her rescue was there.....then suddenly he was not. Attention was directed towards the first young girl, and when they turned around he was not there. This is a very very sad story. This is not a treacherous beach on a fairly calm day , as it was on this day ( ...as opposed to Las Olas that can be very deceptive with regard to drops and currents). That said, this is a very sad situation and many grieve the loss of this young man who was quick to rescue a friend in need. Bill and I heard the recount of the story today from friends who knew this boy......sad, very sad. Our hearts break. Please be careful on these beaches here.
