AMIGOS DE ANIMALES BOQUETE PANAMÁ

SEPTEMBER 2022 NEWSLETTER

AUGUST CLINIC

On Sunday August 28th, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 254 animals, 122 dogs and 132 cats with five vets and one trainee working all day.

68% of the animals were female and 42% came from Boquete. Of this, 201 animals were brought in by owners and 53 came from collectors.

In January we raised our prices for the first time in years to $20 for a dog and $10 for a cat which has enabled us to pay our vets more for their services.  Despite that, we still have a shortfall of over $3,000 at each clinic.

PUERTO ARMUELLES CLINIC

On August 21st we took the mobile van and about 15 volunteers to Puerto Armuelles. Dr. Virgilio and Dra. Amanda spayed or neutered 83 animals - 25 dogs and 58 cats. We are training the volunteers in that area, including many young people, so they can hold clinics on their own in the future. We will return again on December 4th.

GET TO KNOW THE AMIGOS DE ANIMALES FAMILY

This month we're featuring a "collector" - someone who brings in animals from their district.

Name: Diomedes Gonzales

Your position/title with Animales and how long have you worked here?:  I am an Animal Collector mostly in the greater Dolega area - 13 years

Diomedes%20face%20pic.jpg

How did you get started as a Collector?:  we had some neighborhood female dogs that needed to be spayed. I spoke with Lulu Borrell, and she told me how to contact Amigos de Animales.

Can you tell us a little bit more about what you do with Animales?: I help identify owners with cats and dogs that need to be sterilized and then I collect money from them (most of the time) and then help to coordinate with a driver to have them picked up and delivered to the clinic to get spayed and neutered. [Diomedes does not drive]

Why would you encourage others to volunteer here with Animales?: A lot of animals are suffering because they don’t have anyone to care for them.  The humane and important work that Amigos de Animales does helps to minimize the number of animals who are on the streets without proper care

So that we can get to know you better can you tell us anything about yourself?:  I like to ride horses and walk through the jungle where there are little birds and animals to see. I was born and still live in the El Flor area, and I have a mother and brothers. I work at the Federal Mall.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

At our clinics, we have up to 50 volunteers helping at any one time.  If you haven't been to a clinic before, or are interested in learning more about different departments, please watch our training here, and you can click here to watch a video with an overview of clinic day.   Click here for an overview of job descriptions.
