January Newsletter - Amigos de Animales

Recommended Posts

Our mission is to provide low cost spaying and neutering of dogs and cats, and to promote the general welfare of animals in our community and surrounding areas.

January got off to an interesting start for Amigos de Animales.  We had planned our Training Session for New and Returning Volunteers to be on January 11.  Due to a very large response and because of the health concerns in Boquete, we decided at the last minute to do a Zoom meeting instead.  And thanks to our tech wizards, Andy Mitchell and Karen Salacki, we were able to get it out to everyone who had signed up.  A special thanks to Dra. Sandy Ullstrop for providing great information and demonstrations.  There were a few technical issues but overall, we pulled it off, and we had over 80 people attending!

To those attending and those who were not able, we encourage everyone to watch the edited YouTube video by clicking here.

The meeting mainly covered the process that an animal goes through as it travels through the clinic, from Registration all the way to Recovery and going home safely.

We put out an appeal for new volunteers at all our posts and below is a list of the station heads.  Please send an email to Alicia at akcleavenger@hotmail.com for your area(s) of interest. She will have the station head(s) contact you.

• Intake: Sean Trollip

• Anesthesia: Rosie Crofutt

• Computer tracking: Andy Mitchell

• Pre-Op: Sandra Wolf

• Shaving & Tattoo: Rosie Crofutt

• Surgery Tracking/Vet Assistance: Sherry Shirritt

In addition to volunteers needed for the clinics, we have 15+ committees that need volunteers.  Many of these do not require being in Panama. Please click here for information about the areas of need, and let Alicia know what you would be interested in.

The 2022 Amigos de Animales calendar is going fast!  It is available at the Tuesday Market, Sugar & Spice, Mike’s, MailBoxes and Larry's Place.  Be sure to get your copy before they are all gone!

Our annual "non-raffle" fundraiser is kicking off on February 1st!  A maximum of only 200 tickets will be sold, so your odds will be good!  This year we are highlighting the "Pleasures of Panama."  For a donation of $100 you will get the chance to win one of these great prizes:

• Grand Prize: an amazing fishing trip for 4 on the world-renowned Hannibal Bank with "Sport Fish Panama" - value $3,100 (or cash of $1,000)

• 2nd prize: up to 8 people can yacht the day away in the beautiful waters around Bocas del Toro, then enjoy a 2-night stay for 4 at Red Frog Beach Island Resort (or cash of $500)

• 3rd prize: one pound of Geisha coffee per month for a year (or cash of $200)

Click here for a sneak peak, and watch for the email and social media posts on February 1st!

We have made gift certificates in the denomination of $10 and $20, the cost of an individual sterilization for a cat or a dog (we are raising prices slightly for the first time in many years). Do you have a friend or neighbor or worker who has an animal needing to be sterilized? Please tell them that the procedure will make their animals safer and free them from the worry of the related illnesses or injuries that might ensue with cat or dog fights.

These certificates are an easy way to help. They are available at the Animales table at the Tuesday Market or at the clinics. We will honor the certificates sold at the old prices.

In June 2005, Judy Sacco, Jennie Allen, Maria Boyd, and Dr. Chely decided to organize Boquete's first ever spay/neuter clinic with the help of a generous donation of veterinary supplies from Dr. Brown of Naples, Florida.  It was the start of Amigos de Animales.  Dr. Brown passed away unexpectedly in March 2021, and at the time of his death he was still helping animals and working with local low/no cost spay/neuter groups in Florida. Read more on our website.

•  Food Drive: We are continuing to feed the dogs and cats in Boquete and we still need your help.  We have raised $10,835 toward our goal of $15,000.

You can donate by clicking here

•  Spay or neuter your animal: we have a waiting list of over 450 for animals to be spayed or neutered. Contact Rosa, our appointment coordinator, at 6563-8686 to be added to our waiting list.

•  Rescue/adoption?: The mission of Amigos de Animales is strictly spay and neuter, we are not a rescue, adoption or veterinary service.  Please do not ask Rosa about any other services.
