The first lady of Panama, Lorena Castillo, was named as "ambassador of peace" by the UN Women's Association for Peace, for which her goal now will be to prevent violence against women and girls, an official source reported on Tuesday.

"I am honored by the distinction and I thank the Association of Women for Peace, for their confidence, and for the opportunity to be that voice for women to promote respect, equity, inclusion and peace", Castillo expressed when receiving the recognition.

Last March, the same organization awarded the work of the first lady for her leadership in the region in the promotion of human rights and the empowerment of women, for which she received the 2018 Leadership Award.

With the designation of ambassador of peace, Castillo joins the princess Camilla de Borbón Dos Sicilias, the Duchess of Castro; Bushra Khayat; the American businessman Ronald Lauder; and the Mexican Eugenio López Alonso, who make up the group of Ambassadors for Peace of this association.

The Panamanian also holds other distinctions as Special Ambassador of UNAIDS for Latin America and world spokesperson for the Zero Discrimination movement.

The Association of Women for Peace -founded in 2008 under the sponsorship of Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, wife of the former General Secretary of the UN, Ban Ki-moon- seeks to promote and advance the objectives of the UN agencies that provide opportunities for women through social, cultural, educational and empowerment programs, under the banner of a global peace process.

This association is committed to the prevention of violence against women and girls, with the provision of services to people affected by violence, with the strengthening of the application of laws and policies against violence, and with the empowerment of women in the countries and the less favored societies.

The UN estimates that there are some 60 million girls without access to education, which inhibits their ability to learn and make decisions.
