Animal Feed Imports up 20%

During the first six months of the year, countries in the region imported animal feed preparations for $254 million, 20% more than in the same period in 2017.

Figures from the information system on the Animal Feed Preparations Market in Central America, compiled by the Trade Intelligence Unit at CentralAmericaData:

Imports by country
In the first half of the year, the main importer of animal feed preparations in Central America was Honduras with $56 million, followed by Costa Rica with $52 million, Panama with $50 million, Guatemala with $42 million, Nicaragua with $29 million and El Salvador with $25 million.

Variation in regional imports
Between January to June 2017 and the same period in 2018, the imported volume of animal feed preparations registered an increase of 16%, rising from 177 thousand tons to 206 thousand tons. The imported value also grew considerably, from $212 million to $254 million.

For the periods in question, the value imported from Mexico increased 21%, growing from $36 million to $44 million.

Origin of imports
During the first six months of 2018, 24% of the value imported from Central America was from the U.S., 17% from Mexico, 5% from Peru, 2% from France and 2% from Ecuador.
