El Salvador follows Panama with China link

Moderator comment: Yes, we know this topic is NOT about Panama, at least not specifically and directly. Recall that Panama also severed ties with Taiwan in June 2017, and formally established diplomatic relations with China. It appears that China is making a major thrust to become more involved with Central America. That China is also tightening a noose around Taiwan is also noted. El Salvador ditches Taiwan to establish ties with China

Taiwan's president blames Chinese pressure as decision leaves Taipei with dwindling list of allies.

El Salvador has formally broken off diplomatic relations with Taiwan and established full ties with China, leaving Taipei with a dwindling list of allies.

At a meeting with his Salvadoran counterpart in Beijing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi praised the Latin American state's decision to "recognise there is one China in the world".

"This further goes to show the One China policy is in line with international norms, is the correct choice... and is the basis of China's relation with any country," he said.

After signing a document with Wang establishing relations, Foreign Minister Carlos Castaneda said his country had made a "strategic decision" and took the "correct and beneficial path for the people of both nations".

The decision leaves the number of states that recognise Taiwan at just 17.

Taiwan broke off ties before the signing ceremony, when El Salvador's intentions became clear.

"Losing (a) diplomatic ally is not an isolated incident. It is part of China's string of sabre rattling and intimidation," Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said at a press conference in Taipei.

The news came just after Tsai, who is trying to raise Taiwan's international profile, wrapped up a Latin American tour which included stops in the United States, which drew criticism from China. She visited allies Belize and Paraguay during the trip.

Taiwan's foreign minister Joseph Wu said Taipei "will not engage in dollar diplomacy with China", adding that El Salvador had been asking for "huge funding" for a port development project, which Taiwan was unwilling to give because it would leave both countries in debt.

El Salvador's decision comes amid a drive by Beijing to cut off diplomatic support for Taiwan.

In the past year Burkina Faso and the Dominican joined China's side, and in previous years Panama and the tiny African state of Sao Tome have also done the same.

Taiwan and China have been engaged for years in a diplomatic tug-of-war in developing countries.

Economic support and other incentives are often used as bargaining chips for diplomatic recognition

AS PANAMA’S links with The People’s Republic of China are on fast-forward with a team of government and business negotiators  currently in Beijing  negotiating  a Free Trade  Agreement, (FTA) and Chine  construction consortia poised to begin work on massive transportation  projects  The president of El Salvador, Salvador Sánchez Cerén, announced on Monday night the rupture of diplomatic relations with Taiwan to replace them with China.

China and Taiwan are led by rival regimes since the end of the civil war in 1949. The island enjoys an autonomous government but never declared its independence. Beijing has always considered it one of its provinces.

Sánchez Cerén said that he based his decision by virtue of declaration 2758 of the UN that recognizes “only one China”. Taiwan is now recognized by only 17 countries.

El Salvador says "Hello" to China

Following the path chosen by its neighbors Panama and Costa Rica, the Salvadoran government has announced the opening of diplomatic relations with China and a rupture with Taiwan.

Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Reactions to the announcement by President Salvador Sánchez Cerén did not take long. The US government expressed its opposition, stating that the decision will bring negative consequences for El Salvador, while opposition politicians accused the government of wanting to ease the way for China to be granted the concession to operate the port of La Unión.

Elsalvador.com reports that "... US Ambassador Jane Manes had already highlighted China's interest in the region. Recently, the official said that Continental China intends to venture into Central America and the Caribbean, using the weakest flanks of these countries with an interest in "militarizing the region."  In the case of El Salvador, the entry channel would be China's investment in the Port of La Union, Manes said."

In a statement, the Sanchez Cerén administration indicated that "... El Salvador and China will immediately set up a dialogue mechanism between representatives of both countries to "identify potentials" in trade, investment, cooperation, tourism, support for micro and medium enterprises, said the President."
