  1. Well, as I said, I get the 5-lb. turkey rolls at PriceSmart (when available) for my dogs.  If they only wanted to stock what Panamanians want, and if they figure Panamanians don't want the turkey rolls, they wouldn't stock them at all. Again, the sporadic availability (of that and many other items) is their problem of poor inventory control.

Folks who find the annoyance of shopping at Pricesmart to be greater than the convenience can always source other suppliers and take their business elsewhere.

I think that's what a lot of people are doing, except when they need something that only PriceSmart has (sometimes!). Like the 5-lb. rolls of frozen ground turkey and the Kirkland and/or Member's Select dog food (sometimes!).

For people who live in David, it's easy to run back and forth to see if an out-of-stock item has arrived. But I live in Volcan, a two-hour round trip.

The long lines are an annoyance secondary to the poor inventory control.

  3. This is what I posted on PriceSmart's FB page:

Shopping at PriceSmart in David is a nightmare. (1) Never enough cajas open. 25 or more customers have to wait in each line that is open.
    (2) Terrible inventory control. Wonderful products may appear once, never to be seen again. Such as avocado oil and many more items. (3) I rescue a lot of dogs and feed them Kirkland or Members Select kibble. It may or may not be available. Last time I was at the store, there was NO puppy chow of either brand. (The other brands are junk.) (4) I also feed my dogs a lot the 5-lb. rolls of ground turkey. Last time I was at PriceSmart, none of that was available either. Every time I shop at PriceSmart, at least half of the items I have on my shopping list are not available (that have been available in the past).

At $595 this is definitely a bargain! I am offering it at such a low price because I am unable to transport it myself--that will be the responsibility of the buyer.

Email or call 6517-8752 to see "in person" what a beautiful addition to your home this will be. (Or whatsapp at 6361-3234). In the meantime, the pictures will give you a good idea.

  5. I have three unopened packages of these PetSafe batteries. (2 per package, for a total of 6 batteries.) I will sell all three packages for $25.

At Amazon, they are $12.93 per package (or a total of $38.79 for three packages).

  6. Thank you! Can you tell me the approximate area where it is located in Super Baru? (Before when I said I had bought prepared horseradish that had no taste, it was at Super Baru, not Romero.)

I live in Volcan, so the next time I'm in David, I'll get the wasabi. Yeaaaa!

  7. Does anyone know where to find wasabi (or even dried horseradish powder)? I love the taste and "kick" in cocktail sauce.

A long time ago, I bought a jar of horseradish (not creamed) at Romero in David, and it didn't have any taste at all. Maybe it was old. The wasabi or dried horseradish seems to be the best option for making my own cocktail sauce.

    Thanks!

No one is going to change the requirements for donors.

Approaching friends and neighbours might help.

Paying people to donate is probably the simplest and quickest solution.

Well, finding people to pay to donate blood is not a simple and quick solution. Especially if one is incapacitated in a hospital. There must be a way to "solicit" blood donors in advance and make a list of their names, proper blood types, and contact information.... just in case. Any ideas about this, Keith?

  10. This was our second spay/neuter clinic in August 2018. Today 50 animals were spayed/neutered by Dr. Andres Tello, our wonderful veterinarian. The total dogs/cats spayed for August was 85! Plus Dr. Tello also performed several exams and other  procedures, including surgery on a dog's eye.

This brings our total of dogs and cats sterilized to 4,589. Please see my web page for complete details: http://spaypanama-chiriqui.org/120th.html

I can never repeat enough my gratitude for our wonderful volunteers! Besides paying the rent for the building, I pay Dr. Tello, who works for much less than at his private clinic in Costa Rica, and he is the only one who is paid. We simply could not have these clinics and help so many animals without our volunteers. So--I extend much love and gratitude to all of you wonderful volunteers who work very hard all day! Plus many thanks to those who provide food and drinks for our doctor and volunteers!

See the photo album for this clinic here: https://imgur.com/a/RgwgeJK

Our next clinic will be on September 30, 2018. Call 6640-3171 for appointments.

    Blessings,

    Dottie

  11. I don't go to Price Smart from Volcan very often (mainly to stock on on Kirklands), but when I do, I see numerous Panamanians buying Kirkland. (When I'm in that area I also "stick my nose into other people's business" when I see them buying crap-foods and explain to them why Kirklands is the better quality. Almost every customer I've spoken to (suggesting that they READ the ingredients)  has been receptive and they've tossed the junk food back on the shelf in favor of Kirklands. (Yes, I'm a "buttinskie" and will continue to be when it comes to the health and well being of dogs.)

Don't get me wrong...if I didn't have too many dogs to make it possible, I'd not be feeding kibble at all. Although Kirkland is the better of the crap, all kibble is crap. Under my circumstances, I choose the lesser of the evils.

  12. Also, what happened with the "price control" for carne especial? (or is it "primera?) At n Price Smart they are apparently breaking the law by vastly overcharging what the law dictates..

I really hate that store but yet I go there for the few things I can't find elsewhere. They have no idea about stocking what people really want. Mainly I buy bags (lots) of Kirkland dog food (when it's available), toilet paper, paper towels. I usually have a big list of things that I'd like to buy... like Kalamata olives, etc...you get the idea. If I'm able to to find  1/3 of what's on my list, good luck!  Do they even get a rat's patootie of what people want? Not a chance.

Also...the last two bags of red apples were mostly rotten inside. It wasn't worth my time and gasoline to return immediately from Volcan to Pricesmart and demand a refund...my chickens got the majority of the apples.

Thanks for the info about Palatio. I'm not a big meat eater, but whatever I want in the future, I'll buy from them.

I'm glad to have Pricesmart here for the FEW things I can't find elsewhere, but...

Oh...another BIG complaint...there will be a minimal of check stands opens while lines of customers are dozens deep. Does Pricesmart care? (Or even notice?) As I said, I really hate that store and their "management" that doesn't give a crap about their customers..

My first thought would be to greet the person and ask him his purpose for being there. Whether that would be from inside or outside the house would likely depend on the time of day.

C'mon, Keith! "Greet the person," and then ask the one who was sitting in a chair on MY property, inside MY GATE,  what was his purpose in being there? No matter the time of day or night. Get real!

Fortunately, I have someone other than myself at my house at all times, and they know never to permit an unauthorized person inside. But in the event they had to run an errand, etc., and I found such a person ON MY PROPERTY WITHOUT MY PERMISSION,  the first thing I'd do is to release my 16 dogs into the area and command them to attack! Then if that person had been unable to climb my block wall  and escape in time. if there was anything left of that person, I might call the (useless) police and an ambulance.

Geeze..."greet the intruder and ask him why he is uninvited to trespass on my property?" Get real! I respect most of your replies, Keith, but this last one sucks.

  14.  We are so very fortunate to have Dr. Andres Tello operate at our clinics! http://spaypanama-chiriqui.org/119th.html

We had this clinic on August 12th and we will have another on August 26th. It is extra work for everyone involved to have two clinics in one month, but the August 26th clinic has been full for some time now. Our September clinic will be on the 30th. Please call (or whatsapp) at 6640-3171 for appointments.

We are still having problems (such as no success) in getting the local authorities to enforce the law regarding abuse of animals. We will now contact the TV and radio stations about this problem. Other suggestions, please?

Here in Volcan, our small group has been responsible for sterilizing 4,539 dogs and cats to date. (And this number does not include the extraordinary surgeries that Dr. Tello has performed at our clinics...removal of tumors, amputations, etc., nor the clinic we performed in Davila in which 35 dogs were sterilized.)

There are many more to go, but we are making progress! Our goal is to sterilize at least 75% of the dogs and cats in the Volcan area, and thus almost completely solve the problem of homeless dogs and cats, and the terrible venereal disease suffered by so many dogs--but thankfully, we see a lot fewer venereal tumors than we did in the past!.

Remember: In 7 years a female cat and her off springs can be the source of 420,000 kittens. In 6 years a female dog and her off springs can be the source of 67,000 puppies. Unless your dog/cat is totally confined and unable to continue the population increase (AND the spread of venereal disease), please do the humane thing of having them sterilized!

For the health and safety of your dog/cat, however, have the sterilization performed by a competent vet who is experienced in early sterilization (eight weeks of age and up) and small-incision surgeries, and one who uses stainless steel sutures....like Dr. Tello, who we are so fortunate to have operate at our clinics. (I do not trust care of my dogs or injured dogs that I find in the street to ANYONE except Dr. Tello.)

Thanks to everyone who participated in our clinics today, and to those who had their pets sterilized. Always remember that TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

    Big hugs,

  15. Sorry my web page for the July clinic is late. http://spaypanama-chiriqui.org/118th.html

In addition to clinic duties, I've been very busy rescuing dogs, taking injured dogs to Dr. Tello at the border (between clinics), plus filing denuncias (mostly unsuccessful) concerning animal abuse.

Here is a picture of one puppy I am trying to get removed from an abusive situation. He is forced to live on a chain among this garbage, so you can't even see the puppy in the picture. (The “owners” are habitual abusers and neighbors say that these people have let three chained dogs die of starvation.)

The laws are in place, but getting the local authorities to enforce them is the problem. If this puppy dies before they take action, the death will be their fault.

I have recently learned that you can call 311 to file your denuncia (in Spanish). They will give you a case number, then they will send the denuncia to the head government office in Bugaba, where they should dispatch it to be taken care of in Volcán.  They can receive the essence of your denuncia by phone, but once you receive your case number, you can email a detailed written denuncia to them at info@311.gob.pa. You should also include pictures of the abuse with your denuncia.

Today I filed a 5--page followup denuncia with 311. It's probably more effective just to file your denucia with 311 (in Volcan anyway) instead of wasting your time locally. Please! When you see animals being abused, don't fail to act!

We have two clinics in August. The August 12th clinic is full, and we have a few spaces left for August 26th.

See the photo album for this clinic here: https://imgur.com/a/wJVXpnq

As always, my heartfelt thanks to everyone who volunteers, donates (whether financially or otherwise), and to everyone who brings their beloved pets to be sterilized and/or helped in other ways by our wonderful Dr. Andres Tello!

    Big hugs,

    Dottie
