  3. ANNOUNCING... PUP FRESH “FOO FOO JUICE FOR FIDO” PUP FRESH is a new product from El Matador that both you and your canine friend will appreciate. Many veterinarians advise that it is not good to bathe dogs too frequently because of the risk of drying out and irritating their skin. Of course if they roll in mud or something worse, it has to be done. One veterinarian site states: Bathing your dog once per week or more frequently is wrong. If you bathe your dog more frequently than recommended, the dog may develop problems such as: Excessive dryness of skin, due to the fact that the skin cannot produce essential oils at a more frequent rate The coat will get dull, due to the lack of essential oils The skin will be more prone to infections, because the essential oils also have a protective role Dogs with long hair need somewhat more frequent baths because they can, and usually do, collect more dirt. Even some dogs with short hair produce more skin oils than others and need more frequent bathing. But, in general, bathing should not be more frequent than every three or four weeks. So what does PUP FRESH have to do with all this? PUP FRESH is a spray-on solution that keeps your dog looking good, smelling clean and repelling fleas and ticks between baths. If your dog has long hair, you can back comb it as you spray on PUP FRESH so that it reaches the skin better and then brush or comb normally. For short-haired dogs you only need to apply the spray from a fairly close distance and allow it to penetrate to the skin. No rinsing or drying is necessary. After spraying with PUP FRESH, the doggy odor is replaced by a pleasant aroma, while the active ingredients do the job of killing germs and repelling fleas. PUP FRESH comes in a high quality 24 ounce spray bottle---enough to last a good while even if you have a Great Dane. PRICE? It's a bit higher than I would like but a LOT less than commercial dog sprays you can find on Amazon.com or at Wal-Mart. One of the ingredients costs about $12 per ounce. A 24 ounce spray bottle of PUP FRESH costs $8.00. For comparison, a 10 ounce bottle of a similar spray by Burt's Bees costs $7.96 plus shipping to Miami, plus shipping to Boquete. That's only about 42% as much as you get with El Matador PUP FRESH. For second and subsequent purchases, if you return a clean, fully functional spray bottle, the price will be $7.00. To order, send an email to me at rhgusn@gmail.com or call me at 6745-2828. I can usually deliver on Tuesday mornings during at the market, or we can make other arrangements on a case by case basis. If you have not ordered in advance, call me while you are at the market. I try to keep extra products in my car if they are available. WARNING! Do not use PUP FRESH on cats or allow cats near it. For a list of all currently available El Matador products, send an email to rhgusn@gmail.com and request a product information and price sheet. Bob Gregory

  8. ALTO al CRIMEN RISES FROM THE ASHES Like the phoenix of ancient myths, Alto al Crimen is in the process of rising from the “ashes” of its recent travails. After about four months of reorganization and agonizing delays, mostly for legal paperwork and administrative processing in government agencies and by our bank (but also because of government holidays), this week we are finally coming up from the ashes of the past. We want to thank all the donors who have aided Alto al Crimen during this difficult time, and particularly those who made donations in cash while we were unable to access our funds in the bank. And we appreciate the patience of Rodny Moreno because there have been times when the contractual payments to him were delayed. We also express appreciation for the encouragement and support received from so many of you in the Boquete community. Through all of this the Alto al Crimen Hotline has functioned without interruption and has been available to our 500-plus registrants and also to any short-stay residents, tourists and our Panamanian hosts. Our home security inspections have continued, thanks to the work of Richard Moore. We have interacted with government officials and community activists regarding crime problems. We have a number of volunteers to help with our functions and projects and will be happy to welcome others who want to pitch in to help make Boquete a better and safer community. Alto al Crimen is first and foremost a non-profit community service organization, and now that our funds are becoming accessible, we can proceed with some projects that were put on hold. We hope that the many people who have supported Alto al Crimen in the past and many more as well will “vote with your donations” and help us to continue being a service for all the people. Donations may be made by cash or check (payable to Fundacion Alto al Crimen) delivered to David van Harn on the north patio at the Tuesday Market. In the coming weeks we will be rolling out new projects and activities and will keep you informed of them. We are indebted to Mark Twain for this quotation: “Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.” Bob Gregory President, Alto al Crimen Board

  14. Hello all!!! Some of you I have been in contact with, some of you I have not since last year's Holiday season and back to school time where many of you graciously and very generously donated for the low income local families of the Los Naranjos area. Last year we successfully adopted 7 families who benefited with clothes, shoes, toys and food during the Holidays, also 93 very poor children benefited with full school and PE uniforms in the Los Naranjos elementary school. Last night, the principal of the Los Naranjos elementary (by Toledano) contacted me once again to ask for assistance to put together 20 Christmas baskets for extreme poverty families and some goodie bags for the children. As you may or may not know, I am in the US at the moment, therefore it is very hard to help out, except to send her my donation, however, I know that you guys have a tremendous heart and can perhaps lend a hand. They need about $700 for the food baskets and figure another $200 for goodie bags. The principal of the school is Mirian Urriola de Justavino and her number is 6885 5834, she works with the Lions Club and is the at the Los Naranjos elementary school. You can reach her directly, and if language is an issue, I will happily coordinate and translate through whatsapp. Any help $1, $5, as little or as much as you can give, helps...... I know, one of you, frequently visits one of the indigenous families we started to help out last year....for this, I am forever grateful. I am sorry I will not be in Boquete for the Holidays and will not be able to identify many families to adopt. I know of a taxi cab driver (Gabriel), whose ex wife left him with his 2 children (14 and 5), whom he is raising on his own and of little Daniella, whose grandma cleans houses for a living in Valle Escondido and around town to help support her and her daughter...... They can benefit from toys or Christmas presents. Please contact me and let me know if you are interested in obtaining their information. Any help WILL go directly to the families, you will receive their information and will meet them if you wish, even though I am in the US, I will happily coordinate any donations. Please help these families have a little bit of hope and cheer during the season. Thank you very much and hope to see you soon!!!! My whatsapp is 0017864862325 Olga Suarez
