Government hands over new road in banana zone in Puerto Armuelles

President Varela responds to requests for works presented at the first Cabinet Council held in the community

With the delivery of 150 homes and the Puerto Armuelles Interno highway, the Administration of President Juan Carlos Varela exceeds 300 million balboas of investment in public infrastructure projects in Barú, which will help revive the economy of this area of the country.

The President gave 150 families the keys to their new homes - at a cost of 2 million 700 thousand balboas - and inaugurated the rehabilitation of the so called Circunvalación of the former banana zone - for an amount of 22 million 691 balboas - which add up to 17 works that are executed in Baru lands for an amount of B/.274 million.

"Our Government is working steadily throughout the country. We want that in the development of infrastructure, housing, basic sanitation, education, roads and production roads to reach all corners, without leaving behind no one. The results of the teamwork, transparent and honest, are being seen in towns and in neighborhoods”, said the President.

He emphasized that his Administration is responding to the requests raised by the community during the first Cabinet Council held in Barú, and are part of the initiatives being taken to reactivate the banana zone, create more sources of employment and revitalize the economy of the area.

"I am sure that with the conclusion of the projects presented here and the revival of the banana production, better times for this productive region are coming from working men and women who only wait for the opportunity to continue to continue impulsing the development of the country,”, he said.

In the coming months, Barú will also receive an investment of 100 million balboas, after the State and private company signed an agreement to revive the banana activity. It is estimated that in the beginning will generate 3,100 direct jobs and 12 thousand indirect jobs in commerce and services.

Road project

More than 25 thousand residents, producers and transporters of Quira, Chuchupate, Almendro, Balsa, Guayabo, Sigua, Corozo, Cañazas, Burica Centro, Zapatero, Blanco, Palo Blanco, Ceiba, Jagua, Guayacán, Malagueto and Manaca will benefit from the rehabilitation of the Road Puerto Armuelles Interno (Circunvalation of the former banana zone).

The Head of State explained that the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) has to date tendered one thousand 746 kilometers of road through public acts with transparency to increase road asset of the country and contribute to the development of the communities.

This project includes three years of maintenance and the construction of paved ditches, sidewalks and bus stops to offer greater security and accessibility to the population.

The sectors that will benefit from the new housing are the corregimientos of the district of Barú: Puerto Armuelles cabecera, Limones, Progreso, Baco and Rodolfo Aguilar Delgado.

President Varela said that today women, men, children and elderly people receive dignified homes, with concrete floors, electric power, comfortable roof, sanitary service, washing tub, among other amenities, so that they can improve their quality of life.

In Barú, the Ministry of Housing and Land Management (MIVIOT) executes three projects for 32 million balboas, which are a source of employment for the residents of the area and an opportunity for improvement for men and women in the area of construction.
