  1. I use various machines (Windows 7, Windows 19, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad, etc.) and do not have the problem. My wife uses an iPad Mini and she does have the problem. It is beginning to sound like an iPad specific model related issue.

I have no idea what the real problem is, nor about how to fix it.

    Can anyone out there help?

  2. Bud, you may want to look at this site:   http://www.embed.ly.    If your software allows it, it will automatically put a photo and short description around a link similar to the way Facebook does when you post a link.   I tired to post the code directly but it looks like the editor does not accept it from the users, so it would have to be integrated into the software.   Some software already has the hooks in place to be able to do this automatically without any interaction from the user.    Just a thought.

    Twin Wolf,

I did check out the embedly website that you highlighted. Interesting and "neat" functionality, but not something that I cannot permit on CL. To allow raw HTML code to be inputted and executed is simply too risky.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I just keep learning, and learning, and ....

  3. Testing to see if this works as a summary with the link...

    <a class="embedly-card" href="http://www.chiriquichatter.net/blog/2015/11/01/it-was-a-scary-night-in-the-neighborhood/">It Was A Scary Night In The Neighborhood</a>

CL does not see our role as one that includes inputting the content for members unless there is a problem that needs to be resolved.

I was not aware of this web link you highlight, but will look into it. But the bottom line remains that it is the responsibility of those wishing to post to input their content (in a manner that complies with our Terms & Rules). The [limited] staff here at CL simply doesn't have time to routinely input the content for the membership.

  4. Somehow I created my own gallery but have yet to discover how to put a photo in it since the first one.   I keep getting MEMBER GALLERY.  How to I add photos to my own gallery?

I need to get technical for a moment. What you created is an "album" within an existing community level gallery. On this website, the gallery is at the highest level in the photo repository business. Members cannot create a gallery themselves, but only need to ask to get a dedicated gallery. Franagain is the only member who has done that so far. Albums are the second tier storage level. For most members an album is all that is needed. But if you wish to have a dedicated gallery, just ask.

I see your album and it has one image in it. To add more images, just click on the "Add images" button in the upper right of your album.

If you have more questions, we are here to help.

  5. Don Ray's blog links are appreciated by some, but not all of our members. The CL sense is that there are technical and expediency reasons why some people complain. Consider that the use of slow computers or poor Internet service cause members to be reluctant to execute links that slow them down. In no case was there any hint that the complaints were coming from people who did not like his content or that they had a vendetta against Don Ray.

In the spirit of transparency, I am posting the private messages between myself and Don Ray on this matter. The reason for posting these private communications is that CL wishes not to be in the censorship business or acting in a heavy handed manner. To date we have not arbitrarily or unilaterally deleted any content; the only content deleted has been at the request of the originator, and in all of those cases it was because of confusion about how the software used on this website functions. [Further, the only members who have been 'banned' are those who have failed to successfully complete the registration process, meaning they were not banned because of what they had posted, but rather for the information they did not provide that was required for registration purposes. That number as of today is 12.]

Again, what you see below are the two (there were only two) private messages between CL and Don Ray:

    Don Ray,

Several of our members have complained about your blog entries. Their specific complaint is that you are providing only a title and a link, and they don't have enough information to decide whether they want to click on the link or not. What you are doing is not contrary to our rules.

However, in the interest of promoting community harmony, we are asking that you simply add a sentence (or three) around the URL link so that people will have a general idea (beyond just the sometimes cryptic title) about the content that they will find at the end of that link.

    Just a request.

And now Don Ray's response to my private message:

    Understood.

Thats fine. The simplest thing to do is just delete the blog and I won't post in it any more. That should ease the difficulty. "Blog" is really intended for those that don't have blog space on the internet anyway.

I don't see a way to remove the blog, but maybe admins have that ability.

    Thanks.

From the above you can quickly discern that there was nothing but a sincere request on the part of CL to improve the member experience on CL, and a warm and understanding response on the part of Don Ray.

CL has not yet acted on his request to delete his blog because we are trying to find a better solution. Don Ray's postings do add value, and we would have preferred that he simply add a few sentences around the links to his website.

For Don Ray, we ask for your reconsider simply adding a few sentences to encapsulate the content of your blog material.

  6. There are filters associated with the New Content button. Once you click on the button, look on the left side of the screen. You may need to scroll down a bit, but you will see the word "Filters". Underneath that label are the filters that you can invoke. One of them is "since your last visit".

If you have more questions or problems with this, please let me know. We are trying to help with this new and advanced technology that is used by this website.

  7. There are "filters" associated with the New Content button. After you click on the New Content button, then look at the left side of your screen for the various filters that one can apply so as to tailor the response that one gets to their specific needs. The filters can get reset as you do various functions on the website, but a general rule is that it tries to remember what it last did for you. That is not an absolute rule, however.

  8. ...

The law was written in Spanish... sorry.   But I tried to translate legaleese Spanish into English.  For me sometimes is very hard to understand those words used by lawyers to impress normal people that are not lawyers.  So I apologize for my bad English.

    ...

    Roger B,

Thank you for posting additional information about this important subject.

Speaking for the management of this website, we appreciate your interest and efforts. We would also like for you to know that you do not need to apologize for your English language skills. Spanish is the language of our adopted country of residence. Laws should be written in the language of the country. And as guests in your country we should be apologizing to you for our poor Spanish skills, not the reverse.

Thank you again. We appreciate your participation in this website.

  9. Thank you Judy. Your were correct that your question really should start a new thread, and so your reply was split off along with subsequent replies into a new thread and moved to the Questions and Answers forum.

When replying to a message within a thread, a member has several options available from which to pick:

    1. If you wish simply to add your comments to the end of an existing thread: reply to the topic. See the paragraph after this list for specifics on how to do this.
    2. If you wish to focus your reply on only one reply within the thread: start your reply by using the "Quote" button from within the specific reply that you want to focus on. Your reply will go to the end of the thread, but the selected post will be quoted within your reply inside a "quote box".
    3. If you wish to focus your reply on more than one reply (called "multi-quote") within the thread: first use the "+" button (located at the bottom left of every reply) for each and every reply that you wish to focus on, in the sequence in which to focus if that is important to you; when ready to type your input then click on the little pop-up window that indicates how many quotes you have selected.

There are two ways simply to reply to the thread:

    1. Click the "Reply to this topic" button at the top right of the thread.
    2. Start typing in the input box at the very bottom of the thread.

The reply, the editing, and the formatting options within this website are rather advanced and sophisticated. This software uses the latest technology, and sometimes it may seem daunting or overwhelming, but try exploring. Or ask a question in our Questions and Answers forum.

  10. Re the case of the disappearing "New Content" button when shifting from portrait to landscape format on tablets, I have received a reply to the ticket that I opened with the application techies. Egg on my face. They have provided screen captures of Chiriqui.Life showing both orientations on a tablet. There is (repeat IS) a "New Content" button in both orientations on tablets. I tried it on my iPad and it is true.

    portrait orientation screen capture

    landscape orientation screen capture

We are considering this matter closed. If you do not, please let us know and it will be reopened.

Also, thanks for your continued interest and support.

  11. Actually, I like the way NING does it. The original poster can edit their post at any time and they can delete their post if there are no replies to it.

If that is an option that is available, I like Penny's suggestion. That is the same with FaceBook.

The locking function is a configurable option. It is my judgment that our community will be best served by locking postings after a grace period. That judgment is based on the type of information resource we want to provide to our community, coupled with experiences from operating Boquete.org many years ago, prior to the other websites servicing our community.

I do appreciate your candid feedback, and your thoughts are not now forgotten. Rather these kinds of feedback are filed in the suggestion box for aperiodic review.

  12. Thanks MarkoBoquete and others for the good wishes.

We are approaching the one month anniversary of operational status for Chiriqui.Life. An interesting ride so far. We believe we are off to a very good start - not perfect, but very good. We gotta stick to our principles, such as transparency, member support, etc.

I just noticed that your (MarkoBoquete's) posting gets the distinction of being the first "public" posting (not including management postings for testing and configuration purposes) on Chiriqui.Life.

Congratulations to MarkoBoquete for that position of honor.

And please do keep the feedback and suggestions coming in, and use this website, as that is the ultimate yardstick by which success is measured. This is your resource, and more it is used the better it will become.

  13. I've noted that accessing chiriqui.life on my Kindle does not have the "recent content" tab at the top. Huh.

Life is a series of bewildering mysteries for the technically-challenged.....

    D

    WryAwry,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. Life has been chaotic.

As mentioned in my earlier post, the software senses the type of device being used to acces this website, and reduces the amount of information to be displayed because the smaller size of the display panel for tablets and mobile devices.

For tablets, and I can only presume that a Kindle would fit in that category since I do not have access to one, please look for a rather large white on a black background, 5-point star button in the upper right of the display. That is the "New content" button for tablets. That is how things work for iPads.

Please check this out and let me know if we hit paydirt on this answer.

  14. Display names are searchable. You indicate that names are not searchable, but they are. This topic gets confusing because there are two kinds of names in Chiriqui.Life: display names and real names. For the purpose of this answer I refer only to display names.

To search on a [display] name, use the search function doing the following:

    1. In the search field, type the display name, or a portion of the display name of interest.
    2. Change the search scope from 'all content' to 'members'; this is important because display names are NOT ‘content', they are 'metadata'.
    3. Execute the search, meaning click on the eyeglass/magnifying glass.
    4. Select the member of interest, assuming more than one shows up in the search results.
    5. In the profile of the member is a listing in reverse chronological order of all of their postings.
    6. Select the posting of interest.

Going a bit further, you can search using the 'members' scope as mentioned in item 2 above, and leave the display name (the search parameter) field blank, and the result will be a listing of all members on this website in alphabetical order by display name.

Bonnie, that was a good question. Thanks for posting it in the Q&A forum so that other members can benefit from your experiences.

  15. The Boquete Art Café now has a blog on Chiriqui.Life. The description field shows all the particulars about the restaurant. Hours do indicate they are open for lunch as well. I believe Marcelyn was referring only to their time frame for evening meals.

You can see all blogs by clicking on the Blogs tab at the top of the screen. Here is the link to their specific blog: http://www.chiriqui.life/blogs/blog/16-boquete-art-café/

  16. Thanks to Dr. Sleepwell for an incredibly prompt overview of the public meeting earlier today on security matters at the BCP Theater in Boquete.

I generally disapprove of cross-posting of cross-posts (one level of cross-posting is common, but not a second level). However, given the significance of the topic and the high degree of interest, I am making an exception to my personal policy.

Here is a link to additional information from the Chiriqui Chatter website about that public meeting: http://www.chiriquichatter.net/blog/2015/10/27/october-27th-security-meeting-at-bcp-in-boquete/.

  17. It speaks well for the success of this forum that I received so many helpful comments so quickly

    ....

    Sunset,

Thanks for the positive feedback. Your experience with Chiriqui.Life is what we are trying to achieve for all of our members. At least we have one happy member. Now for happy member number 2, then happy member number 3, etc., .... One at a time is slow, but it does feel good.

[In the interest of full disclosure, I also responded to this and your other inquiry, but using my personal name (Bud).]

  18. I'm not comfortable with the constant monitoring of my posts and the chastising (twice now) by Admin.

    Judy,

It is our job as owners and management of this website to review everything on an ongoing basis. When something is posted that violates our Governance Documents then we have to take action. When something is posted about how this website functions that is misleading or incorrect then we have to take action. It is about protecting the reputation and integrity of this website. That is part of our responsibilities. We do that impartially. Other members have experienced some gentle, helpful feedback as well. You are not the only one.

We are attempting to help everyone use this website to their benefit. I am just doing my job. If you have more questions or comments, please let us know.

  19. Be careful of what?  I'm talking about, after I make a post, at the bottom there is an edit button to go back and correct a typo or add something else.  What am I supposed to be careful of?

I ask that people be careful about posting incorrect or misleading information. I do not believe that to be a burdensome request.

If you read the referenced Q&A post re editing on this website, you will read that members have a 15 minute grace period for editing their post, after which the post is locked. That means no more editing. As I read your words, I interpret them to mean an ability to edit forever. That is not the case, and thus misleading to those who read you post. This isn't a supercritical matter, but I do spend a fair amount of time helping people use this website, and I have heard more than once "but I read where you said xyz, and it doesn't work." It wasn't my xyz.

I am happy to see that you are getting more comfortable with Chiriqui.Life.

  20. Can't find "filter".  Won't bother looking any more, because Activity Stream works.

Judy, I see from a later posting that you have found the "filters" that are available when clicking on the "New content" button. For the benefit of others, here is a screen capture for a Windows machine, using Firefox as the browser.

Note that for tablets and mobile devices, the "filters" is there somewhere on your screen, but certainly NOT like the below screen capture.

Actually the "New content" button is extremely powerful, useful, and configurable.

Thanks for hanging in there. And as some say, the "Activity stream" can also be used to find the newest content, but I personally find it awkward. Everyone is free to choose the tools that work best for them. One of the neat things about the software we chose for Chiriqui.Life is that it uses the latest in Internet technology and techniques. It does take some getting used to, but when you get comfortable with those tools, your productivity goes way up. Also, the search tool is very powerful as well.

Happy to read that you did find the "Filters" capability.
