  4. On Sunday October 28, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 221 animals, 100 dogs and 121 cats, with four vets working.  In addition to the usual spay/neuter, they were presented with some additional challenges which they met with their usual skill and professionalism.  We never know who or what will be presented to us at any given clinic.  What we do know is that every animal will be treated with care and compassion.

This was the last clinic of the year bringing the total of the animals that went through our clinic to 1,759 and 14,994 since our start in 2005.  That is a lot of animals!

We have so many people to thank this year.  First and foremost our vets: Dras. Chely and Amanda, and Drs. Tello, Cesar, Virgilio, Ricardo, Aaron, and Manuel all of whose dedication and hard work we gratefully appreciate and hope to see them all back with us next year.  And thanks to our visiting vets, Dra Sandy and Dr Jeff who we wish we could see more of here in Boquete. Thank you!

And where would we be without our volunteers?  Our thanks to your being with us at the clinics and staying with us through the good times and the sometimes difficult.  Over the years, we have lost some great volunteers but we always do seem to get new ones to join us and while our old friends cannot be replaced, we continue to have the best volunteers in the world! Many thanks to all for the care and attention you give to the animals who are entrusted to us at every clinic.

A special thanks to Jane Hampton and Jane Vasarhelyi who keep our kitchen running so well and ensure that all the vets and volunteers are well fed and happy throughout the day. And thank you to all those who bring in the food.  A special thanks to Heidi and Mike of Mike’s Global Grill who donate pizzas to every clinic and keep our vets going throughout the day.

Thank you to the Mayor of Boquete and the entire community which has embraced our message of spay and neuter and recognized and encouraged us to continue our work in the community.

Our next clinic will be Sunday January 27, 2019.

    COMING UP:

There will be a general meeting on Monday December 3 at 1PM to discuss plans and ideas for fundraising in 2019 and beyond.  Any and all suggestions will be welcomed.

Thanks to you all for all you do!

  5. One of the very best ways for newcomers to meet others and learn the ins and outs of living here is to attend the weekly market at BCP. The Tuesday Talk is an integral part of the market and runs from 10:30 to about 12 in our 96 seat theater. At the talk you will get to know interesting local residents and also those who are willing to come from other places to address the Boquete community. For example, today (August 2) talk will be given by a most interesting couple living here in Boquete:

Tuesday, August 2 David & Leianne Scee will speak about their lives as “Retired Rovers”. They have wandered the globe by land and sea and always make it a point to give back to whatever community they land in. When they heard about the untimely death of the physical therapist at the Handicap Foundation, they rushed back to Boquete. They are currently committed to staying as physical therapists for a year. Their talk will be accompanied by photos of the places they’ve stayed in and the projects they developed. Truly an amazing couple; come and meet them.

  6. These are great ideas about videotaping and selling the right to access the download but you guys forget we are a volunteer group and we are greatly over-extended as it is. If someone wants to volunteer to videotape and then program the website to collect money for a download, we would welcome your volunteer effort.

  7. Folks

At John and Susan's suggestion we have organized a presentation about this topic at the Tuesday Talks at BCP. It is scheduled for June 21.

So far the panel will consist of Alicia McGuigan (Amigos de Animales), Dottie thompson (Amigos de Animales), Lisa Mosley (ARF). We have also asked Dottie Atwater who runs the clinics in Volcan and who posts here to also participate. Each of these people come with a vast array of knowledge and Dottie Thompson has extensive medical training.

The panel will cover not only emergency care for pets, but also how to contact a vet in an emergency situation. We will also talk about the clinics, general pet health care, and the ARF mission (adopt, rescue, and foster).

  8. The BCP is launching a trial balloon on May 21. We will be hosting a Saturday market called "Taste of Boquete". This market will be food and drink vendors only. The first market will be FREE to all vendors of food and drink offerings. Most of the food and drink vendors from the regular Tuesday market are on board but we want new blood. If you or somebody you know sells food and/or drink products, please contact Elena Serracin at facilitymanagerbcp@gmail.com or 6920-1111.

  9. DeDe Wedekind is a pretty famous singer who is moving to Boquete. Her new album "Dram of You" just got nominated for Album of the Year and she's heading for the Grammy awards show on April 24. DeDe wants to do some concerts around the area -- including a fund raiser for BCP. She is looking for a "very good classically trained Soprano living in the Boquete-David area."

If that's you (or someone you know), please write to deborahwedekind1@gmail.com

  10. HELP !!!

BCP has a Texas Instruments In Focus projector which we use for most of the Tuesday talks for power point presentations.

It has recently started shutting down after about 8 minutes of use. It appears that it is overheating because if left to stand for 5 minutes or so it can be restarted for another short time.

Is there any technical guy or gal out there who would volunteer their time to help trouble shoot this thing.

We don't even know where to buy a new one (if a new one is needed)

  11. Edna Landau will be on stage this morning. In addition to talking about the archaeological site accidentally discovered on her farm, she will be bringing a variety of her home-made preserves for sale.

Tuesday, Jan. 12 – Edna Landau, owner and tour guide for Sitio Bariles will talk about the history and discoveries made at her archeological site. Barriles (known also as Sitio Barriles or by the designation BU-24), is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Panama. It is located in the highlands of the Chiriquí Province of Western Panama at 1200 meters above sea level. It is several kilometers west of the modern town of Volcán.

  12. Booked for a Tuesday talk at BCP:

Tuesday, Feb. 16Ben Schuetz, owner of a privately owned observatory in Boquete dedicated to Optical SETI searches. http://optical-seti.org/  SETI is an acronym for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. The Boquete Optical SETI Observatory is located 3 miles from Boquete at 4400 feet on a southern slope of Volcan Baru. It was constructed beginning in 2008. The observatory has a newly fabricated 20 inch Newtonian with a piggybacked 14 inch classical Cassegrain for tracking.

    Last Minute Program Change

The scheduled BCP speaker for Tuesday, Dec 15, Elizabeth Farrell de Rios has had to cancel because her husband Abel was involved in a serious motorcycle accident.

We will re-schedule Elizabeth's talk about the coffee history of Boquete and send our thoughts her way while she attends to Abel in the hospital.

"Mr. Flexible", Lloyd Cripe will step in. Some of you recall we had to bounce Lloyd from the program when the Panamanian government wanted to address the foreign community in Boquete. So (without further ado) ta-da . . . .

Tuesday, Dec. 15 Lloyd Cripe the founder and operator of www.Boqueteweather.com will give a talk entitled:  Boquete Weather: Things are changing.  He will review the history of the weather station and the development of the website.  Data will be presented demonstrating the changes in weather over the course of 8 years.  The most likely causes will be presented as well as the challenges of the future.  This is the third presentation he has given over the course of 10 years of living here.  Come and see what he has learned.
