We are lending equipment for both health and hospice care. We are becoming known and starting to know people with whom we can partner for a more effective outreach. Recently we met with the municipal authorities to explain what we do as well as establish a way to work together. The Vice Mayor, the wife of the Mayor, The Social worker for the municipality were present at the meeting. For our organization Laurie Collier and Marjorie Sarner were present. Promoting BHH, it´s services and the Blood Drive to the Boquete City Council We were offered the opportunity to present to the full council of the district. We made the presentation to a very welcoming audience. One of our new supporters, a retired Panamanian nurse Edith Miranda, was a very effective ambassador for our foundation. BHH donated some equipment to the Mayor’s outreach efforts to the community. Vice Mayor Ofelia provides the walker to a woman whose mother had fallen that morning. Boquete Expo Fair We participated in the Expo Fair, held on the 14th of September at the public market. Our emphasis at these two events was the upcoming October 19 Blood Drive at the Animales Event Center from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. We signed up possible donors at the Fair. We have requested time to present this Blood Drive initiative at each of the upcoming community meetings in each corregimiento. Our goal is to sign up 100+ potential donors. The staff from the Blood Bank at Hospital Regional is bringing up more staff and equipment to service a larger group of donors. Nurses Helping with Blood Drive We are fortunate to have 4 Panamanian nurses who are assisting BHH with our Outreach Program. One of them, Maria Isabel Beltran, is the President of Luz de Esperanza de Boquete, a group that gives support to cancer patients. Boquete Health and Hospice also thanks our members Marjorie Sarner and Carmen Restrepo for their efforts as liaisons with the nurses, the community and the Spanish-speaking callers to our phone line 6781-9250. Bilingual skills are a valued commodity in our organization. Thank you ladies! With Zaida Zapata, Director of the Blood Bank at Hospital Regional The Hero's Blood Drive! October 19th Heros Blood Drive at Animales Join Matching Fund Donate Blood Boquete Health and Hospice has a new initiative called "The Magic of Music" Val Strahl and Beverly Stearns will create personalized playlists for patients to borrow along with a music player. Val became interested in working with a Hospice organization 7 years ago as a result of her husband needing Hospice care as he was dying of cancer. He left her a large collection of music.. In 2015, Val moved to Maryland to be closer to her son and during that time she volunteered at a local Hospice. This Hospice was enrolled in the musicandmemory.org project. Val's job was to create music lists for the Hospice patients. Since retiring to Panama, she has made her husband's music collection available to the community. Val and Beverly thank Laurie Collier for helping to organize this new program. We also thank the members of the community who have made donations to begin the program. Bring your questions September CPR Update In the first episode of the “Heimlich Maneuver”, the worst-case scenario has now happened. The choking person has not been able to cough up the foreign body by himself. His attempts are now “high-pitched wheezing” and then nothing! You have positioned yourself behind the person and applied the abdominal thrust, aka Heimlich Maneuver, without success. The person is turning blue; his eyes roll back and he slumps to the floor. You help ease him down, protecting his head. You don’t need a head or cervical spine injury, too! He’s out cold…unresponsive. Your brain is racing and your heart is scrambling. I mean, your heart is racing and your mind is scrambling. What do I do next? I should have signed up for those last 2 spots at BHH CPR Class. You cry out, “HELP! Somebody help!” Tom and Beverly are nearby and hear your cries for help. What luck! They have taken the CPR class. With her knee pads on, quick as a bunny, Beverly takes control. “I know CPR. Tom, I’ll do chest compressions. You can do mouth-to-mouth. The face shield is on your key chain. You, whatever your name, go call for help, preferably Rodny Direct and get an AED.” An AED defibrillator, if available, is a life saver and easy to use. Consider a group purchase for your neighborhood – available at Amazon for $1,295. The last English-speaking CPR class for 2019 will be Thursday, October 10, at 2:30 pm after the BHH general meeting. There is still time to sign up. Email BHH to reserve a spot. info@boquetehealth.org Our Mission Our mission is to provide palliative care for the terminally ill in order that they may experience death with dignity and limited pain; to inform and promote community health; and, to support people with health and wellness needs by providing information, equipment and volunteer services. Maybe you had an accident, maybe you just had surgery. Or maybe your loved is at the end of life needing hospice care. BHH developed our equipment loan program to help you when your life has taken a detour. Our inventory includes: wheel chairs, walkers, hospital beds, oxygen concentrators, canes and more – to support you for your short-termneed. WHAT TO DO: 1. Call or WhatsApp our Administrator at 6781-9250. 8am to 8pm only! 2. The administrator does an assessment either over the phone or with a visit. 3. Hospital beds are delivered, perhaps with additional equipment. All other equipment is checked out at our storage locker. Arrangements are made for someone to come and meet one of our volunteers to pick up the equipment. 4. Because our inventory is limited, the equipment is on LOAN for 1 or 2 months only. 5. Kindly call or WhatsApp 6781-9250 to return the equipment so it is available for loan to others in need. 6. DONATIONS are greatly appreciated for this service. We use donations to buy new equipment and to store it. Storage currently costs us $200 a month. 7. Remember that we are not an emergency service. Our equipment loan team is a group of caring volunteers who will attempt to accommodate your needs in a timely fashion. In July we helped: 6 Panamanians with 7 items and did 5 home visits to set up or pick up equip and 9 expats with 19 items and 4 home visit to pick up or deliver equip. in July, the equipment team made 25 total trips to the locker to loan out items or to receive returned equipment. All respiratory equipment is available for loan to both the expat and Panamanian community. Most requested and needed is oxygen supply equipment for the home and portability. The organization currently has 15 home oxygen concentrators of which 8 are currently in service. These units make concentrated oxygen from room air and do not require any refills, like compressed gas oxygen cylinders, which are the only other available source of oxygen in Chiriqui. Boquete Health and Hospice also has three portable oxygen concentrators for special needs. These units are loaned out on a short-term basis when a patient is unable to travel to and from the doctors without supplemental oxygen. During this year Boquete Health and Hospice has placed 12 oxygen concentrators with 7 being returned for future placements. All disposable oxygen tubing and delivery systems are provided to the patient without cost. Boquete Health and Hospice has also supported two patients with portable oxygen concentrators to return to the United States. Both units were returned to Panama without incident. Patients with oxygen equipment are monitored by a respiratory team from Boquete Health and Hospice on a one to two month basis to evaluate use and ongoing need as well as checking the equipment for proper function. Boquete Health and Hospice also has a supply of eight CPAP units that have been donated over time. These units are used to support nighttime breathing by patients with sleep apnea. The units are permanently placed with patients. The organization does not supply the disposable tubing and masks. Boquete Health and Hospice has placed four CPAP units so far this year, with one being returned. Boquete Health and Hospice also provides nebulizer compressors for patients needing to do home respiratory medication treatments through inhalation directly into the lungs. The patients receive the disposable equipment from the doctor’s office and our organization can provide the compressor. We have 9 compressors with 3 currently in use and two available at the office of our medical director, Dra. Digna Diaz. Please Donate in order to continue to provide our community services we ask for your assistance. The equipment loan program is a very costly - for example $200/month just for storage, $1000 for each bed, and $2300 for an oxygen concentrator. If you can help, please donate. Click Here to Donate Equipment Loan Policy Boquete Health and Hospice is a volunteer organization that has limited equipment and volunteers. Although we would like to help everyone that requests equipment, we restrict our SHORT TERM loans to residents in our service area based on: 1) assessment of the need 2) the availability of our volunteers 3) the availability of our inventory. Respiratory equipment requests from outside our service area will be handled on a case-by-case basis. If you need equipment you must call the administrator. Please only call between the following hours: 8am to 8pm - +507 6781-9250 Our Equipment Loan Program is limited to The District of Boquete Though I have a genetic form of asthma that in my 70’s is quite a challenge... because of the Boquete Hospice program that loans visitors a portable electric O2 machine, I am here , for a month, enjoying this magical place of beauty and peace. In late March, I fell while loading my groceries ( in Arlington, VA.) and suffered a severe compound fracture of my left ankle. Classified as a “ highly traumatic” injury...the doctor suggested , when I had sufficiently recovered, that I get away to a calm, peaceful place where I would still have help and support. After over three months of surgery and rehab, my surgeon agreed to let me travel to Boquete. I was told I must have both a walker and a bath chair ( and of course an O2 machine). My daughter asked BH& Home Healthcare for help, and they promptly lent us all three of these vital tools to assist me. I was also told that “If I needed anything else while here... to please be sure to let them know.” This Team of caring compassionate individuals has made such a positive difference for me ... allowing me to continue both my physical and emotional healing in this , as I call it “ Panamanian Garden of Eden!” Thank you and may you continue to be blessed as you share your gifts of time and compassion to all here who need your help. With great appreciation.... Jo Clem What If?....there's an emergency, are you prepared to help? CPR Training has been a successful endeavor for BHH. Three classes under our belt already! “Can you speak? Can you speak?” I hear no sound, but the frantic, bulging eyeballs of fear and the clutching of their neck speaks volumes to me! This person is choking! Do I know what to do next? Does the waiter know what to do or does he just turn his back and walk away? Early intervention saves lives! That is the intention, the goal for which the CPR Training program was birthed. As we grow older, our teeth break, rot, fall out or get pulled out and replaced with bridges and dentures. Chewing can become difficult and painful. Dentures become loose and fit poorly as our gums shrink. All hazards that increase our chance of choking. How about during our wonderful opportunities for socializing in Boquete that distract us from paying attention to our eating habits. We talk, we laugh, we turn our heads and wave to our friends walking in...and oops, down the wrong pipe. Cough, cough, cough, no big deal. We do it all the time. But one day it could be the major choke. BE PREPARED! Sign up for BHH’s CPR program that includes training on recognizing someone is choking and how to assist that person best. It may only require you to encourage that person in their coughing attempts. Or move on to the next step...Heimlich maneuver or now generically known as the abdominal thrust (The AHA had a falling out with Dr. Heimlich and so essentially is not allowed to use the word Heimlich). Sometimes the Heimlich Maneuver is unsuccessful and the person passes out. Now what do you do? Stay tuned for the next episode in next month’s BHH newsletter. Better yet, sign up for the next CPR class. The September 12th class has 2 spots still available. The October 10th class has 6 spots available. Both classes will start at 2:30 pm and take about 1 and 1⁄2 hrs. To request a spot email info@boquetehealth.org We are planning our first Spanish-speaking CPR class November 14th, Thursday at 2:30 pm. Consider sending your housekeeper, gardener or your next-door neighbor. We are hoping that local restaurants will send their wait help, as the Heimlich maneuver can come in handy sometimes. We are working on training our translators in CPR, hoping to avoid the English to Spanish time constraints. If you would be interested in helping in this area, please notify BHH. There will not be a December class, so if you are not able to attend one of the last 2019 CPR classes listed above, we will see you in the New Year. BHH CPR Training is supported through donations at this time, so we ask for your special consideration in this area. Buying equipment and supplies is on-going. Thank you all, especially the CPR Instructors who put all their time and talent into making this program successful. Prior to moving to Boquete, Linda taught nursing assistants at a career school. Linda serves as the Boquete Health and Hospice CPR Coordinator for training. Bring your questions. A BIG thank you to Merl Will-Wallace for his July 30 presentation, “Meditation for Health and Happiness.” And a hearty thank you to our volunteers Erin, Dave and BHH Ambassadors Shirley, Jeanie, Phyllis and any other members who attended. Photos by Mike Weber A Special Note From Lesley Hughes Our Administrator Boquete Health and Hospice is such a wonderful, caring group of people. So many are involved in doing projects that will help our community and spread the word about what the organization is all about – Health Fair, Blood Drive, Lectures, BCP table. There is also a fairly large group of people that work behind the scenes to bring health care to our population. Over the last few weeks I have been acting as interim administrator and have seen first hand how kind and generous the Equipment, Respiratory, Meal, Translating, Information, and medical/Administrative teams are. Sela, Michael, Kat, Cat and Judy have gone above and beyond to help those who have called for help. A special thanks to Michael who made two trips to deliver equipment to a very sick patient, stayed to remove some of the cardboard recycling, drive a family member into town so they could get a rental car, and spend several hours helping the family when the patient got home from the hospital. Cat had delivered beds on the same day as requested and Judy and Kat have responded extremely promptly for the smaller equipment needs. Merl and Michael who have delivered concentrators and nebulizers and made house calls. Without Merl’s help, one of our patients, who was experiencing severe respiratory distress, may have died. Beverly S. (and her meal team of Tamera, Jan, Evie, Molly and Tatiana) organized meals for two back-to-back cases with almost no warning. Luis and Carmen who have helped out with translating needs. First while out of town in Panama City, and then Luis with one of our health care cases who needed translator help in David. Joanie who is always willing to speak to people about “Being Prepared”, even when they are out of our service area. Liz and Bev T – always there to advise and answer questions. Dra. Diaz who made a house call and, I believe, actually saved a patient’s life. These people, and others, sometimes don’t get the recognition of a well-done job. I just want to say THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO! Once upon a time, (actually only a few months ago), an embryonic concept was put in motion and the Blood Donor Initiative Team was born. The team quickly geared up to create the FIRST EVER Blood Drive in Boquete. BHH offers our sincere thanks and appreciation to Dotty Davis who was our special speaker at our May 9th fundraising event. A good time was enjoyed by all. Money raised will help pay for our oxygen concentrator which we loan free of charge to members in our community. Boquete Health and Hospice Offers CPR Training BHHF's first ever CPR class was a success! Whatever space is not filled, we will begin reaching out to the people who signed up at the Health Fair last October. Those include shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, mild chest pain, nausea, vomiting, & epigastric pain. In Boquete, if you think you or someone you are with, are having a heart attack, call your emergency number. Most of us are not fluent in Spanish, especially in an emergency situation, so Rodney Direct is an invaluable service. He will call Dr. Boya’s ambulance or the Bomberos for you. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms chew a regular aspirin and lie down near the unlocked entrance door. If you don’t have access to emergency services, then drive yourself to your nearest neighbor who can drive you to the nearest hospital. Take a friend, they may have to do CPR! Do not take NTG unless it has been prescribed for you. No one in Boquete is equipped to take care of heart attack. Go to the emergency room at a hospital in David. They have all the latest medications & equipment. A serious problem many physicians see here in Boquete, is new residents dropping dead, or suffering from complications of chronic problems. Do Not Stop Your Medications! Your health problems do not suddenly stop just because you retire! Many people just stop their medications after moving here, then develop heart attacks, heart failure, kidney problems, or uncontrolled diabetes or hypertension. All of the physicians I know in town will be happy to work with you to wean down your medications, if your chronic health problems improve. Do not try it alone. You don’t want to die or increase the damage to your body at the beginning of your new life! Boquete Health and Hospice's Next Presentation in our Healthy Living Series: Tuesday, July 30 – Meditation for Health and Happiness. Meditation was once considered just a spiritual practice, commonly associated with Buddhism. Over the past 20 years the universal practicality of a meditative practice has become a studied technique for health and happiness. Today medical doctors and psychologists regularly prescribe meditation as a positive treatment for many physical and psychological issues. This presentation will cover the identified positive effects of meditation as noted in the medical literature, a brief overview of various meditative practices prescribed in modern medicine and a brief, audience participation demonstration. Come find a practical, free process to greater health and happiness. Merl Will-Wallace has a Masters degree in mental health counseling and over twenty years of counseling experience. Merl personally utilizes a regular meditative practice and has taught meditation in private and group therapy sessions for many years. A reminder for the event in English.
  18. Don't miss this important community health presentation!
  19. This is the Hospital Regional questionnaire for blood donors. Please peruse it if you are planning on donating blood at our blood drive on June 15th.
  20. To all who will be donating blood on June 15th: *It is very important to pre-register ASAP by providing name/email/ phone number to Anne Maxwell, evesham100@hotmail.com or Carmen Restrepo (bilingual), carmendebotero@gmail.com/6670-4940. Donors will be contacted to chose a one hour timeframe for arrival to donate blood. This will allow us to provide the best service to our generous donors. Walk-ins will certainly not be turned away. The actual registration form can be filled out upon arrival. *A copy of passport, cedula, or Resident ID is required to register to donate. Unfortunately, no exceptions can be made. I will share this reminder again as we get closer to June 15th. *The health questionnaire will be posted again for people to review. It will give an idea of what types of health issues could prevent someone from donating blood. Should anyone have a medical question, please feel free to email me and I will do my best to answer it. A physician will be reviewing the questionnaire with donors and it is their decision regarding eligibility to donate. *The age range for donation is 18-65. *If transportation or childcare is an issue, please let us know and we do everything possible to provide assistance. There will be an area for children to engage in a couple of activities. *For individuals unable to donate blood but still interested in contributing to the Blood Drive, we would greatly appreciate a few volunteers to help out, as well as donations of bottled water, orange juice, cookies, saltines, peanut butter sandwiches, small plastic cups, small paper plates, napkins, trash bags and toilet paper. I truly appreciate all of your assistance. Have a great day.

  22. Greetings! By way of introduction, my name is Anne Maxwell and I have been a nurse for 40 years. I am currently a volunteer for Boquete Health and Hospice. The organization, in partnership with Hospital Regional and The Rotary Clubs of David and Boquete is hosting the FIRST EVER blood drive in this community. Please join us in supporting this event on Saturday, June 15th at the Ruby McKenzie Clinic from 7:00am-1:00pm. All blood donations deemed to be acceptable will be banked as "credits" for future use by anyone in the community at no charge. Our Mission Statement: To save more lives by improving the availability of blood to all members of the community. It is my hope that you will take the time to share this information with your family and friends, encouraging them to donate blood. The age group for donation is 18-65. Should anyone want to register to donate blood or have any questions, please contact me via email at evesham100@hotmail.com (especially for medical inquiries) or Carmen Restrepo (bi-lingual) at carmendebotero@gmail.com/6670-4940. Choose to make a difference by donating blood and spreading the word about this life saving cause. Thank you. Regards, Members of the Blood Donation Initiative Team Boquete Health and Hospice
