When a recent communication with Dra. Digna Diaz highlighted that the healthcare workers did not have enough PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to work safely, two of the volunteer organizations in Boquete decided to help. Boquete Health and Hospice and Club Rotario de Boquete investigated what the Policlinicia and the three Bajo Boquete doctors’ offices needed. The items required are N95 masks, surgical masks, Disposable gowns and face shields. A source was located in David and an order was placed on Tuesday, April 21. Laura Daniel, President of Club Rotario de Boquete and Lesley Hughes, President of Boquete Health and Hospice worked together in order to bring the items to Boquete on April 24. The supplies were distributed to the Policlinica, Alfa Clinic, Clinic Especializada, and Dra. L. Boya. By assisting the healthcare workers in obtaining the necessary PPE, both Club Rotary and BHH are hoping to keep our medical staffs healthy. Your donations enabled us to purchase these items. **In addition to allowing Boquete Health and Hospice to assist in providing our healthcare workers adequate protective items, your donations allow for the purchase of equipment for loan; the storage facilities we use to keep the unused equipment safe and clean; training and education materials. Your donations are gratefully accepted. Thank you all for donating. 1) Lesley Hughes (BHH), Dra. Boya and Laura Daniel (Rotary) 2) Dra. Diaz and her staff 3) Laura Daniel (Rotary), Dra. During a health crisis there will be no meetings, classes, trainings or other gatherings. For the protocol for delivering meals or equipment and interacting with patients go to the link below for full instructions. Dra. Digna Diaz has provided us with important information regarding COVID-19. See full instructions in the link below. When we are able to resume these activities, we will let the community know. On March 19, 2020, BHH conducted its first video meeting using Go To Meeting. Seven of our Council members were on the call. We will hold our next regularly scheduled Council Meeting at 10:00 a.m. on April 1. Depending on the results of that meeting, we will attempt to hold a video meeting for our membership. More information to follow. Boquete Health and Hospice Policies During A Health Crisis Regardless of anything else, our volunteer’s health and safety must come first. Under no circumstances will our volunteers be placed in a situation that endangers their welfare. We can still delivery meals and music to people’s homes, but: We will not enter the home. The meal/music will be left at the gate, and NO physical contact with any person will be made. Our volunteers will respect the 2-meter distance requirement. No Hospice or Home Healthcare visits will be made. Equipment loans will be considered. Equipment borrowed from our lockers will be sanitized prior to pick up. Equipment returned to our lockers will be sanitized outside the building prior to being returned to storage. Respiratory equipment will be set up at the locker, delivered to the home (outside) so all the patient/family has to do is plug it in. Pick up of respiratory equipment is to be made outside the home, wiped down with bleach before being placed in the volunteer’s vehicle. We appreciate that these requirements are difficult, but we are attempting to still provide the majority of our services while keeping our volunteers, their families and friends and the community safe. BEING PREPARED The new handbook, “Being Prepared in Boquete for Life and Death”, is in the process of being printed. We are unsure of when it will be completed. The information contained in the booklet has been simplified and is easy to read. The handbook will cost $10.00. You can reserve your copy by emailing a request to: prepared@boquetehealth.org Boquete Health and Hospice wants everyone to be able to afford a booklet. If you are so inclined, an additional donation will allow others to receive a copy. Boquete Health and Hospice is still here and helping, just in a different way. Request for Help/Donations Boquete Health and Hospice usually raises funds through our events. However, now and for the foreseeable future, there are no events. Top Right filling out the paperwork at Blood Bank. Bottom left and right some of our Heroes giving blood at the great facility at Regional Hospital BHH Now has Mini Training When BHH started out, the training offered to new volunteers was a three-day program, designed to teach members about the history of hospice, the new organizations philosophy, basic skills of communication and medical care. With the growth of the current span of services, volunteers have joined who have no desire to actively work with patients. These new volunteers desire to be Ambassadors (they are usually the first actual face those who greet people attending our events see, drive people to medical appointments, and perform other tasks around town that promote our organization), or to work to increase our Public Relations, or work on logistics for the meetings, or work to improve our administrative functions. A three-day training program contains information that these non-patient-care people don’t need, so the BHH Training Team, under the direction of Beverly S, developed a mini-training that covers the vital principles from the longer training program. On February 28, six people experienced this mini-training. Over the course of two hours, the history of Boquete Health and Hospice was discussed, as well as current initiatives and teams they could work on. The expectations of all volunteers were covered as well as a very basic review of communication and listening skills. This mini-training will be offered every six months. Tuesday, February 11 - 10:30am - BCP The Healthy Living Series Falls Prevention Awareness Falls are the number one reason people end up in the emergency room. The facts about falls are alarming - and probably surprising: • One in three adults over the age of 64 falls each year. • Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in Florida residents over the age of 64. • Every hour there are 2 deaths and 251 emergency room visits in the US because of a fall. • 20 - 30% of older adults who fall sustain serious injury. • Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injury, fractures and hospitalization in older adults. • Even falls without an injury can limit one's mobility and/or cause a fear of falling. Come to the BHH presentation on Falls Prevention Awareness to see what you can do to avoid a fall. Presenter: Merl Will-Wallace Boquete Health and Hospice has a new service called "The Magic of Music" Our music team includes Val Strahl, Beverly Stearns, Sandy Dillon, Helena Deakin and Chuck High. This team will provide music to any of our BHH patients who request it. We will ask you to tell us about your favorite music, and then create a personalized playlist for you. This is a lending program and we will lend you a small digital music player so that you can listen to this personalized music using earbuds. We could lend you cd’s if you prefer. Music can bring back memories, take our mind off our worries and pains and sometimes change our moods too. This program serves all patients recovering from illness, surgery or a fall, but it may especially help those with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. The Magic of Music to help our patients CPR Update Looking Back 2019…Looking Forward 2020 CPR planning officially got underway in April 2019 with the first class held in June. Concentrating on training BHH members in CPR first, then to other expats in the community, we held our first Spanish CPR class in November. We have trained over 70 people in CPR and Heimlich maneuvers this year. Thank you all, especially you dedicated CPR instructors, for making this program successful! Now for 2020. We have a lot to look forward to. Three restaurants have requested their wait help be trained in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. This is advantageous to us expats, as we are the ones who frequent their establishments. We will also continue holding English-speaking CPR classes, the next one being Thursday, January 16 at 1 pm at the Animales Clinic. If you are interested, please contact Boquete Hospice and Health Foundation. Anyone interested in becoming a CPR instructor, English or bilingual, also contact BHHF. info@boquetehealth.org Next CPR Class Thursday, January 16 - 1 pm at the Animales Clinic Our Mission Our mission is to provide palliative care for the terminally ill in order that they may experience death with dignity and limited pain; to inform and promote community health; and, to support people with health and wellness needs by providing information, equipment and volunteer services. Our mission is to educate our local community on the value and benefits of donating blood, and we see momentum! Our heartfelt THANKS extend to ALL involved with this Blood Drive: The blood donors; the Hospital Staff from Regional, Hospital Chiriqui and Mae Lewis; the Matching Fund Donors who donated dollars instead of blood; the Mayor´s office and City Council for their support; Radio Chiriqui; the Rotary Clubs of Boquete & David; the Lion´s Club, and of course, our valued, hardworking BHH VOLUNTEERS who put in hours of work to make it happen. YOU ARE ALL HEROES in service to our Community! Hospital Regional Staff Letter to the Boquete Community The intent of this letter is to communicate to the Boquete community the resources that we recently utilized and to thank the medical services providers who excelled in delivering the necessary care we needed. As both of us had long careers in the United States health care industry we carefully researched the local medical services when it became necessary for us to secure the use of them. The agents we chose exceeded our expectations in every way. As residents of Boquete for almost fifteen years, we had remained in good health until Wendy was diagnosed with breast cancer at Hospital Chiriqui six years ago. This had been managed until a couple of years ago when her cancer metastasized and we began our research for local end of life care. We chose Clinica Especializada Boquete and Dra Shannon Tuer as her primary care physician. This was the best decision we could have possibly made as she received excellent medical care as well as profound compassionate care. She also extended this same delivery of care to Wendy's family. This clinic has extended hours for patient convenience, is reasonably priced, and all the physicians are bilingual. Dra Tuer faithfully followed Wendy's plan for end of life care and she died last week the way she wanted, peacefully, and pain free in our home surrounded by her loved ones. I would also like to thank Jessica Bell, her physical therapist at Clinica de Terapia Fisica y Rehabilitacion, who treated Wendy at home when she was no longer able to travel to town. The Pharmacias Revilla employees special ordered liquid nutrition by the case when she required a liquid diet. Boquete Health & Hospice provided all the necessary equipment Wendy needed to comfortably remain at home. A respiratory therapist delivered supplemental oxygen when Wendy and Dra Tuer decided that it was necessary to make her more comfortable. To the volunteers who are the vital engine of the Hospice team, I cannot adequately express my gratitude for your compassion and willingness to help in any possible way. And to our Panamanian friends who have been so supportive and loving, there is no possible way to say thank you. Salud Kate McHaney Thanks to our Heroes, The 66 people who came to donate and the Matching Fund Heroes who could not donate blood so instead donated a $ amount to match each pint of blood we collected. The total raised by the Matching Fund Heros was $1373.00 (enough for example to buy another hospital bed for our loan program) Cheryl Crabbe Merl Allen Will-Wallace Alison and Bill Brundage John Sandeen Price and Susan Peterson Will and Joanie Feuerstein Rich and Dee Lipner Trish Christofferson Dave y Erin Ross Tim Rhodes John and Babbie Earle Lucie Conner & James McCallum Keith Woolford Joyce Newton Lorraine and Chris McCall Laurie and Kelly Collier Plus 2 Anonymous donors Once again Boquete Health and Hospice teams up with the Tom McCormick Foundation to bring much needed medical equipment to Panama and Chiriqui. Tom's foundation brings down a container once or twice a year full of medical equipment ranging from a wide variety of wheelchairs and walking aides to hospital beds and lots of Pampers. Tom also specializes in fabricating donated prosthesis for arms and legs using donated prosthesis from the US. For the last three years Tom has graciously allowed Boquete Health and Hospice to ship down oxygen concentrators in his container. This year BHHF was able to bring down 8 refurbished concentrators to replace many of the units that are breaking down after nearly four years of continuous use. Volunteers from BHHF go down each year to help Tom unload his container and to bring back the equipment for our Foundation and the Boquete Knitters and Quilters (see photographs). We greatly appreciate all close and cooperative relationships BHHF has with other non-profit organizations in Boquete and David.
