OFF THE CUFF Veggie supply and price problems
Posted on July 30, 2016 in Off The Cuff, Panama
Post Views: 53OFF THE CUFF Veggie supply and price problems
WHILE HOTELS and restaurants are bemoaning the shortage of oinions consumers of other basic vegetables are complaining of the rocketing prices since a year ago.
Restaurateur’s point out that if they have no onions and are forced to cut service there is a a chain effect that hits the revenues of suppliers of eggs, milk, meat or soda and other products and employees.
Yori Morales, president of the Association of Traders Food Central Agricultural Market (MAC), said that the onion has great role in the development of dishes in hotels, restaurants and fast food franchises.
“The onion is so important for the preparation of hamburgers, and food with international character as when a European hotel guest asks for a steak with onions or a cebiche” said Morales.
Armando Rodriguez, president of the small hotels in Panama, said the shortage affects the service in the hotel restauarants and therefore the visitor experience.
Morales said that the country consumes 45,000 bags of onions a month, so to supply the entire country requires at least 30 containers of onions.
This requires a logistics post-loading evaluations carried out by the Food Protection Authority (AUPSA) distribution.
Therefore, a rapid assessment is needed to supply the country said Morales.
Between Friday and Saturday, AUPSA released about 5,000 bags.
Meanwhile the price of onions has rocketed along with 100% increases in the wholesale price of celery and carrots, which means an even bigger increase for consumers in supermarkets.
When President Juan Carlos Varela returns from his European jaunt he will be faced with problems in Santo Tomas Hospital and with consumers wondering about his promise to keep the lid on the price of basic foods.

Unless the item is listed in the law, there is no discount on it no matter how many pensionado card you present or how many managers you speak to.
This is simple. Now, as a voluntary courtesy, several of the grocery stores offer a 10% discount to pensionados the day the social security checks arrive. This is a promotional effort on their part and doesn't have anything to do with the law.

One of the best known alternative medicine practitioners will speak at the BCP Tuesday Talks at 10:30 today.
Jennifer Daniels has both a medical and MBA degree and has a nationally syndicated radio program. We're lucky to have her living here in Boquete and willing to share her knowledge with our audience for only one single dollar ($1.00) !!!!!

The Cable Onda office briefly moved to the location on the Chiriqui Hospital road while they were remodeling their main office. They are now back in their original office which is diagonal from the large office supply store in David.

They've changed to time to make it clear that the eat-in food offered will be more lunch than breakfast. The new time is 11-2. I understand that they're trying to make this a family day with some entertainment for the kids like face painting and clowns.
If you find value in the monthly food market it's imperative that you support it with your presence and dollars. There's the regular stand bys and some brand new and gourmet food vendors. Come, buy to take home and buy to eat in. La Villa coffee house offers it's tables for anything you want to eat.

BCP is very proud of what is happening at La Villa. We've put the "Community" back into "Boquete Community Players".

When I was a teenager in the Jurassic, the only method used to stop the kids from having sex was fear and shaming. That didn't work either.
That's true but I would be willing to bet there were a lot fewer teenage pregnancies in our day. It definitely was the exception and not the norm.

Whatever happened with the donations requested by a Valle Escondido resident for a a vehicle for a police detective?
I believe they finally collected enough money and the car was fixed. Their intentions were all good but were somehow misinterpreted by some members of our community.

Here - just change the phone numbers (see attached).
Thanks Judy, but these signs need to be printed on plastic to withstand the weather. I found them the other day at Arrocha in David while I was waiting for a photo to be printed. By the way, Arrocha has the best photo printing services in the area. 2nd floor behind the escalators.

What's the latest from Alto Al Crimen?
Interesting you should ask? I too was wondering that this morning and called up Franc Lugo (911 operator) to see what he knew? All Franc knew was that they paid him his monthly check at the beginning of the month. I don't think there's many folks left on the board and I hear that Dave VanHarn is resigning from his job as database manager. The AAC by-laws state that if it's disbanded, the money left over will be donated to the Handicap Foundation. Since the Handicap Foundation is desperately in need of funds, it might be worth while for AAC to call it quits and donate the money rather than to die a slow and expensive death. Just my dos centavos.

Bill and I discovered a cut of beef from the lower leg of the cow called "jarette". It appears to be the calf portion with tendons attached. (It's so popular that sometimes Romero rations out how much they sell. ) We discovered that the best place for finding it is Super 89 across from the Canasta Basica down at the "Y" in the divided highway in Dolega. The meat is lean, flavorful and loaded with tendons that cook down into a gelatin that's yummy.
To prepare the meat for a great pot roast feel: Cut into 2-3" chunks. Put into a pressure cooker pot to fill the pot about 1/3 full. Toss in a garlic powder packet and 1 or 2 packets of chicken stock powder. Fill the pot with enough water to just cover the meat. Put on the pressure cooker lid and cook for one hour once the wobbler starts to move.
I like to sear the meat first nice and brown before I start with the water and the hour cooking. Cook on low heat so that the wobbler is barely moving....
This started as dog food until we discovered how good Flossy was eating !!!!...
I agree that Jarette is the closest thing. When you find it in Price Smart it's cut into smaller pieces and is great for stew or vegetable beef soup. However, for pot roast, I want a chuck roast.

Going east or west on the Panamerican?
Turn right at the DK Tire store when traveling East (toward Panama City) on the Pan American Highway. You will see the very ugly Palacio Hotel on the left corner. Cross the street and the Palacio Butcher shop is immediately on the left. Best hamburger you ever ate. They know how much fat to grind into it.
