National Day of Black Ethnicity

Event details

May 30th is the day chosen to to honor people of Afro-Antillean descendancy  in Panama.

Anyone who's studied the construction of the Panama Canal understands that there wouldn't be one were it not for the labor of tens of thousands of workers from the West Indies.

Black Labor on a White Canal Panama (1904-1981) by Michael L Conniff

This is an eye-opener of a book about black labor during the canal construction.  The amount to racial discrimination was off the charts then.  The school system for one had to be 100% separate.  (The education of the children  of black workers was actually far superior to that which was available to them in the USA.)    Anyway this was an interesting book to read albeit a tad boring with statistics at times.
