On Friday, May 5 at 9:00 pm, dust particles from the Sahara entered the country, which could remain until May 9, according to information by the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (IMHPA).

The areas under prevention notice are Guna Yala, Colón, Veraguas, Coclé, Panamá Oeste, Panamá, Los Santos, Herrera, and Darién.

The statement explains that the particles that are entering are of low concentrations, but they will cause a decrease in air quality and increase the hazy effect in the sky, caused by grass fires.

They add that this condition can affect the population sensitive to allergic and respiratory conditions  The highest concentration of dust is expected for May 7 and 8.

Dust from the Sahara reaches America every year, after traveling thousands of kilometers from Africa.

The IMHPA has also warned about the increase in ultraviolet radiation rates throughout the country. This condition will be given from May 6 to May 8 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

For noon hours, these indices could reach their maximum level, that is, up to 14 in the interior of the country.

They warn that exposure to the sun can cause irritation and burns on the skin, so the population is recommended to use sunscreen, hang clothes, hats, caps, and sunglasses, and hydrate a lot.

According to the table presented by lMHPA, the ultraviolet radiation indices are high when they are between 6-7, very high when they reach 8-10, and extreme when they exceed 11.
