Over 180 ranch homes were destroyed by fire in the Wala community, located in the Guna de Wargandí region of Darien on Friday, March 3 reports the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc).

Sinaproc continues to coordinate humanitarian assistance to provide support to those affected.

The Wargandí Region is one of the five officially recognized indigenous regions in Panama. It is located in Darién, on the border with Colombia.

The region was created in 2000 and extends over 1,600 square kilometers.

Endangered species
The economy is based on agriculture, fishing, and crafts. The region has a great diversity of flora and fauna and is home to many endangered species, including the jaguar, ocelot, and giant otter.

The Wargandí region has a rainy tropical climate and a rugged topography with mountains and rivers.

The region has several tourist sites, including protected natural areas and indigenous communities that offer unique cultural experiences.
