The National Institute of Statistics and Census (Inec) confirmed this Thursday that the enumerators visited 1,537,183 homes and censused 4 million Panamanians, which represents 90% of the estimated population. According to the census cartography, So far, the distribution by sex in the national territory stands at 50.4% women and 49.6% men. While 32.8% of the population recognizes itself as Afro-descendant and 14.4% as an indigenous population. Population growth from 1911 to 2023, year after year has been increasing. People with a disability reach 168,255. The presence of foreigners in the national territory is 243,314. The nationalities with the most presence are Colombians, with 26% (64,225); Venezuelans, with 23% (58,858) and Nicaraguans with 11% (28,112). Emigration reached 16,312, the main reasons being studies and work. It was found that out of 10 Panamanians, 9 have a cell phone, computer and internet access. In terms of education, it was recorded that about 392,328 children between 6 and 11 years of age attend school. However, there are 100,577 people who are illiterate. As for access to public services, it was found that out of 100 people, 7% do not have drinking water or electricity. In view of the progress of these results, the Comptroller General of the Republic, Gerardo Solís, recalled that by next Saturday they should be finishing the census or field stage. She lives with her family in the Emberá Wounaan region, in Lajas Blancas, a community located three hours from Metetí in the province of Darién. This was reported Tuesday, April 11, 2023, by the Comptroller General. According to the institution, they identified Chami Dogirama as the oldest person in the country through the latest data collected in the XII National Population Census. "These censuses have revealed important data, such as the longest-lived person in the history of the country and possibly the world," said comptroller general, Gerardo Solís. According to the interview conducted by the census takers, Mercedes Chami Dogirama had seven children, two of whom have already passed away. She has 54 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her daughter Mercedes says she is in "impeccable health", walks, sews, and sometimes even cooks. According to the census, Chami Dogirama ranks as the oldest person in Panama with 125 years, followed by a man residing in the province of Colón with 118 years, and in third place a 116-year-old woman residing in the province of Veraguas.
