Panama's first monkeypox death, 7 new cases

A 35-year-old man, from the district of San Miguelito,  became Panama’s first fatal victim of monkeypox, the Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported on Thursday, April 13.

According to the entity, the death was reported during the week of March 30 to April 12.

The patient had a severe condition characterized by skin lesions in various parts of the body and manifested the different symptoms of the disease, such as fever, and general malaise with progressive deterioration of his general condition.

According to the entity's report, the victim was in home isolation and under monitoring, but after the evolution of the monkey, he had to be hospitalized at the Arnulfo Arias Madrid Hospital Complex from February 17.

From March 30 to April 13, seven new cases of monkeypox were detected.

After these new cases in the country there are 223 people affected by the disease  Minsa stressed that prevention is the most efficient weapon to avoid contagion.

Of the accumulated cases, 9 patients are currently active (7 in home isolation and 2 in health facilities), while 214 ended their isolation without major setbacks.
