Deputy Director of public registry assassinated in broad daylight

The deputy director-general of the Public Registry of Panama, Agustín Lara Díaz, was murdered in broad daylight on Sunday morning November 14, while he was participating in a registration process for the ruling Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) in San Miguelito).

According to preliminary reports, two hitmen arrived on a motorcycle at the sports complex where the political activity was taking place. One of them went to find Lara Díaz and pumped several bullets into his. The killers then fled.

Lara Díaz was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The motive for this murder is still unknown. “It is a case that is just happening. We are establishing the lines of investigation, ”said John Dornheim Castillo, director-general of the National Police.

It is the second assassination of a prominent PRD activist in recent months. The last one, also in broad daylight,  was on the Corridor Sur.

$10,000 reward for Colombian murder suspect

The National Police is offering a reward of $10,000 for information that allows finding the location and capture of Yeison Felipe Possu Mera, a Colombian national, with passport AS535076.

According to the authorities, Possu Mera (30 years old) is allegedly linked to the murder of Agustín Lara Díaz, deputy director-general of the Public Registry, on November 14.

The San Miguelito Regional Prosecutor's Office indicated that Possu Mera possibly resides in El Crisol, La Pulida 1, José Domingo Espinar district.

If there is knowledge of the whereabouts of Possu Mera,  contact the telephones 507-3349, 507-3327 / 507-3331 of the Regional Prosecutor's Office of San Miguelito; 512-2228 of the Directorate of Judicial Investigation, or line 234-1233 of the Directorate of Police Intelligence in San Miguelito.

In the same case, Judge Llemajara Pedroza ordered the provisional arrest of Sebastián González Sánchez, 23, on Tuesday, November 16.

González Sánchez's connection arises from the statement of a protected witness who described him as the person who was driving the motorcycle.

Lara Díaz was shot dead by two men who were traveling on a motorcycle, while the activist of the  Democratic Revolutionary Party participated in a registration campaign for his group. Another person was injured.

$10,000 reward suspect surrenders

Yaísmo Felipe Possu Mera,  who has a $10,000 reward price tag on his head for his alleged involvement in the assassination of the political insider and former deputy director of the Public Registry, Agustín Lara, turned himself in on  Saturday, afternoon November 27.

He was accompanied by his lawyer, Sarai Blaisdell who said he is innocent since he was only identified by a protected witness who has said that he has seen him directly, “however, something so elementary in its characteristics has not been able to point out, since it does not have the characteristics indicated at the time of the statement by the protected witness ” referring to a scar and a tattoo.

According to Blaisdell, the delay in going to the authorities was because "obviously he needed an effective defense."

Possu Mera, affirmed that he is innocent, that he has nothing to do with the murder a d that he did not appear before because he felt fear and wanted a good defense.

When questioned about where he was during all the days prior to his delivery, the accused indicated that he was kept in hiding for fear of the reward and that he would be tried without a worthy defense.

He pointed out that he has been in the country for between 7 and 8 years, has children born in Panama, and has worked as a courier and as a construction assistant.

Agustín Lara died from multiple shots at the time he was in the San Miguelito district, in political activity of the Democratic Revolutionary Party. One person is kept under provisional arrest for the crime.
