Where can I find plastic food wrap (like Saran); not the brand that sticks to itself where I need seven hands to get the material wrapped around and cover my food? Help!

Quit fooling around!  Pricesmart sells the commercial packs of food service film in either 12" or 18" widths.  I've got the 18" which allows you to wrap virtually anything.  The days of having to be a contortionist trying to use the small variety packages are gone.  I haven't mastered how to tear a sheet off so I hold one side down and slide a straight edge razor blade along the box's built in blade and it cuts perfectly every time.

We had dinner with friends at Oasis Restaurant last night. This is one of our favorite places to eat.....always good food and great service. What a pleasant environment with the garden filled with colorful flowers and those happy but noisy frogs splashing in the stream.

Will always have fond memories remembering our times here and sad that Oasis will close soon.

Say it isn't so!  Has this been verified?  Did they tell you last night?

Complaint claims Trump lawyers threatened Panama magistrate

By JEFF HORWITZ, JUAN ZAMORANO and MARK STEVENSON

PANAMA CITY (AP) — Lawyers for President Donald Trump’s family hotel business threatened a Panamanian judicial official handling a dispute related to Trump Hotels’ management of a 70-story luxury hotel, according to a complaint filed with the anti-corruption division of Panama’s chief prosecutor.

The complaint reviewed by The Associated Press said lawyers from the firm representing Trump’s hotel management business accosted a justice of the peace, Marisol Carrera, in her office after she ruled against Trump’s business on a minor issue in the fight over control of the Trump-branded luxury hotel. The abuse continued, she wrote, even after she called police to defuse the situation.

Trump’s lawyers dispute the claims, and the magistrate declined to discuss the matter with the AP.

The episode marks another odd turn in the feud over the Trump International Hotel on Panama City’s waterfront. Trump’s team was eventually evicted from the hotel, which was stripped of his name and reopened under new management. But the battle continues in court.

Trump stepped away from running his business interests after becoming president in January 2017 but he still owns them. On a day-to-day basis, they are managed by his children and longtime executives.

The behavior described in Carrera’s complaint occurred during the time Miami-based private equity investor Orestes Fintiklis was vying for control of the hotel, located within a high-rise that also contains a casino and a condo association.

The magistrate was not involved in the main hotel dispute, but ruled against Trump’s interests in a fight over control of the office containing the hotel’s closed-circuit security system.

Trump’s lawyers from the Panama City law firm of Britton & Iglesias berated her and her staff in her office, she said.

“I felt intimidated and threatened,” wrote Carrera, who handles basic legal matters and disputes as part of her job as justice of the peace for Panama City’s government.

Trump’s attorneys in Panama denied any misconduct.

“The lawyers were never disrespectful, nor rude, nor did we make any sort of threats nor intimidation like the kind we are falsely accused of,” the firm said in a statement. The statement said the firm’s attorneys had not been given timely access to documents related to the dispute by Carrera’s office and simply demanded them in the presence of a notary hired to document the interaction.

Looks like it's been a stormy few weeks for President Trump.

This wasn't meant to start a political discussion but only to follow up on Ambassador Feeley's leaving.

    Bonnie,

I wasn't either.  But I found it odd that Ambassador Feeley stated in this article that he couldn't work under the current president due to his travel ban yet this travel ban is a copy of the previous president's travel ban.  It would be nice if he provided clarification.

    Bonnie,

What I find interesting is that the country specific travel ban that Feeley refers to that President Trump issued was word for word a copy of former President Obama's travel ban.  The media did come clean on this simple fact but stated that President Trump had "negative intent" with the ban.  The power of the media.  That's like an auto dealership denying selling you a car because they think that you have negative intent and might run someone over.

An expat friend recently relocated from Boquete to San Ramon, Costa Rica, and says that Costa Rica is a lot cheaper (food, alcohol, and rent), cleaner, far better roads, and the people are a lot friendlier.  After my few visits to Costa Rica (not San Ramon) and having had friends living in Costa Rica visit me here in Panama, that's not our experience.  Friends can't believe how cheap things are here in the grocery stores especially beer, wine, and alcohol.

Does anyone know what the requirements are and the average cost is to obtain permanent residency in Costa Rica?

    Whose balance sheet?

Are you referring to the majority ownership of the project? They are looking to improve their earnings (or cut their losses) by changing management.

    Keith,

I may be using the wrong terminology, I've never been on the controlling side of a board room, only the begging side.  I'm referring to Trump enterprises (whether Trump himself is officially part of it or not) being disassociated with this particular investment since it's probably now considered a toxic investment to Trump enterprises due to recent events.

  9.

What amazes me is the fact that Trump's entire enterprise was scrutinized well before the 2016 election, one must wonder if these troubles existed then.  In retrospect, this is a godsend for their balance sheet since the hotel industry in Panama City is in the toilet.  It'll be interesting to see if troubles exist at any of his other interests.

    Or was this a joke?

    Bud,

Unfortunately it's a serious problem.  When we were all kids we could play all day with our friends using our imagination.  Kids today resort to things like this when the the internet is unavailable because they have no imagination.

This is a complaint about outrageous prices for certain items in Panama.

I would assume that most gringos have a clothes washing machine in their home. We do. It is an energy efficient model and works very well. It requires the use of what is called "HE" soap. I believe "HE" stands for high efficiency. We typically use the liquid Tide brand that we get at PriceSmart.

Yesterday we went to David (first trip in many weeks) because we were out of just about everything, including laundry soap. We purchased one container of Tide laundry detergent, and the price now is $31.99, not including tax. It wasn't that long ago that it was in the mid $20s, and few months before that in the lower $20s.

Last fall we were in the US and stopped by a large and well-known grocery store chain, but not a warehouse business. The same bottle of Tide HE soap was under $14.00. The price now in Panama is more than double. It must have arrived via private chartered airplane with dedicated attendants. :o

This is outrageous price gouging, in my opinion.

    Bud,

There was a rash of Tide thefts at retailers in the states years ago due to the high prices which forced them to attach RFID chips to track them.  Ridiculous.

  12.

    Bonnie,

Was this in Boquete?  About a year or so ago there was a discussion on Gringos in David Yahoo Groups about thieves using drones to scope out potential targets in residential areas of David.  They were specifically looking at backyards looking for items to steal and inspecting the level of security on the back of houses.  One crime watch member instructed people to immediately drive around your neighborhood looking for parked cars since consumer grade drones do not have long ranges.

As for trespassing, that would depend on who owns the airspace above your home.  I know that varies in the US, I don't know about Panama.

Lot's of interesting reading on this subject in the last couple of years since companies like Amazon have been testing using drones for deliveries.

The Trump organization's hotel management company, Trump Hotels, has been accused of mismanagement and financial wrongdoings at the property.

    Facts are facts.

    Keith,

I think it may be a moot point since President Trump was required to step down from any positions of control of his companies.  Per the Reuters article below, he still maintains ownership of his companies but handed over control to his two sons.  Can he be trusted is the big question.

I have not yet applied for Social Security payments.  But, if I elect to start taking them, do I have to apply at the Costa Rica embassy?  Or can I do it on a trip back to the US and merely visit a Social Security office in Houston, for example?

I assume I'll make the decision to have the funds deposited into an American bank account.

    Uncle Doug,

A friend of mine here in Boquete applied last year.  They make it pretty simple to apply, there are three ways, either in person at a social security office, online via their website, or via telephone.  They were successful via telephone.

You bring up an excellent point.  However, how much are you willing to pay extra for the infrastructure necessary to improve the availability of electricity?  How much can the average Panamanian afford?  I'm sure at some point this was presented by Union Fenosa to Panama's regulatory agency, ASEP I assume, in the planning stages and it was apparently declined.  It usually goes something like "Constructing redundant facilities, in this case parallel poles and lines, to improve availability would cost x amount of dollars requiring us to raise the average monthly bill y dollars."

I'm sure a study like this was completed, it sure would be interesting to know the numbers.

I purchased a home in a Panamanian neighborhood where the previous owner's monthly electric bill didn't exceed $3.62 in their last six months of occupancy.  So an infrastructure surcharge of say $5 per month would be a burden to someone living on a $50 per month social security check.  One would think this may have been a deciding factor.

    Keith,

Speaking of, where did Boquete's two stationary cameras in the park and one mobile camera go?  They went offline when they turned on free WiFi service.

The stationary cameras used to be accessible at the following web links:

What I can't comprehend is why the electrical main feed to Boquete wasn't ran under ground during the widening of the highway a few years back! Piss poor planning as usual here. Some idiot that can't drive runs off the highway and takes out a trunk line concrete power pole below los Molinos a while back and the whole area was without power for the day? WTF?

    Ahren,

It comes down to cost and time to repair.  Underground utilities experience far less disruptions however are far more difficult to detect and resolve problems versus above ground lines.

Nearly 140 years after Edison started the first distribution company it amazes me that Panama (Fenosa) is still having difficulty delivering consistent, reliable power, with nothing more than wind (or rain) as a natural bogey man. Hard to remember a week without any interruptions.

No one has ever explained to me why our power goes off regularly for a minute or two and then comes back on.  Why is it happening so often in the first place? Switching within the grid? Really?

No one is expecting a "1st World" electrical system - - - but what exactly do we have? 2nd? 3rd? Something in between?

HOLLY COW. Just went off again!

Now back on after a 10 minute delay.

So lets hear from the electrical engineers as to why this is happening.

    John,

Retired EE here however my area of study was digital.  Burning up chips and circuits boards in lab was cool, studying safety particularly electrocution in high capacity electrical environments wasn't.  Designing and manufacturing a bad chip could earn you a bad grade, a miscalculation in a hicap lab could result in death.
