Family of the Month Rainy season in the Boquete area means more indoor activities and pastimes for many of us, but for Orlando and his family, this is a season of even greater hardship. As a farm worker, making a monthly average of $120, rainy season is a time when work is scarce and so are the wages to support a family of eight. Though they pay no rent for their wood and zinc house and have no electricity, they must make enough to feed and clothe everyone. He and Adelina send four of their older children to school and look to a better future for them. Go to our website www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com to see how you can help Orlando’s and other BVB families. Click HERE to donate now. The Great Stocking Stuffer is Here! 13. Family of the month - May 2016 Meet Dallys del Carmen Dennis Please meet Dallys, a valuable part of the work we do at Buenos Vecinos de Boquete. She is the Admistrator of Amigos de Boquete (not to be confused with Amigos de Animales), and has been there for over ten years. Like Buenos Vecinos, Amigos de Boquete is a food program serving the community. At AdB, the focus is on school children in thirteen local primary schools, which are provided a fresh hot meal daily. Because of her unique position in the community, and the overlapping goals of our two charities, Dallys manages the distribution of Buenos Vecinos food to twelve of our families. The majority are handicapped, indigenous, and many are single mothers. Dallys and her assistant, Madelaine are busy ladies! They work under the guidance of local resident, Philip McGuigan, whose family's foundation not only finances Amigos de Boquete's school food program, but who also regularly brings in containers from the US with vital supplies for many charitable organizations working in Chiriqui, including a rice supplement that benefits food programs like Buenos Vecinos de Boquete. When she's not visiting all those schools and managing the cooks responsible for the daily hot lunches, she can be found supervising a lively bunch of children with their school homework and computer use. Stop by and say hello to this whirlwind of a woman with the big smile and kind heart; Amigos de Boquete is located in the Alto Dorado shopping mall. Check out their website: www.amigosdeboquete.org If you would like to assist the work of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated. 17. Family of the month - April 2016 THE SANTOS FAMILY The Santos family of six live in a riverside shack just outside downtown Boquete. They have no electricity, cook on an open fire, and depend on questionable water for their needs. Narcisio (46) earns a small wage when field work is available; his wife Vilma (38) has suffered from an undiagnosed illness for over a year. Their teenage kids all attend school; the two girls pictured (Griselda, age 16 and Yamileth, age 12) attend school through the generosity of a local expat who provides their school uniforms and books. Son Melvin (16) also attends school, and the oldest son Oliver (19) is able to get occasional work as a coffee picker. Despite their difficult living circumstances, the family is close-knit and proud of the good grades their children receive in school. It is families like the Santos' who receive a monthly food supplement from Buenos Vecinos de Boquete. They, and over 100 other families, are the reason: BVB is holding our May 14 fund raiser, "Tropical Treats," from 5:30 to 8PM at the Amigos de Animales Event Center. Purchase a ticket at Mail Boxes or at the Tuesday Market, and join your friends in supporting the important work we do for the community. Single mom, Diana is 22 years old raising four-year old Brayan and two-year old Angel with the minimal support of $80 a month from the boys’ father and has no additional family support. She and the boys live in a single 10 X 12 foot rented room for $45 a month plus utilities. Angel was born with a severe cleft palate, as evident in the photos. He also has asthma which prevents reconstructive surgery at this time and adds an additional monthly expense for expensive medicine. The doctors are waiting for Angel to outgrow the asthma and will perform surgery when it is safe to do so. Even though Diana has minimal financial support she has a lot of courage and the love of her two adoring sons. Brayan holds up his new toy to mimic his little brother’s bandaged lip.
