The governing body of the elections stated that citizens who are aware of the "alleged payment of money or any type of gifts in exchange for signatures to support the candidates for Independent Nomination must inform and submit the corresponding evidence" before the Electoral Prosecutor's Office. The Court recalled that the current Electoral Code "categorizes that action as an electoral crime" and establishes "a penalty of 25 to 365 days fine" for any person who engages in this offense. It is also included the "suspension of citizenship rights and disqualification for the exercise of public functions for one to three years." More than 2.7 million people are authorized to cast their ballots in the general elections of May 2019, according to the preliminary census. In those elections, the president and vice president of Panama will be elected; the 71 deputies to the National Assembly (AN) and the 20 deputies of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen) with their respective alternates. Also 81 mayors, 679 district representatives and 9 councilors. All these main positions in office have their alternates. http://www.panamatoday.com/panama/electoral-court-highlights-fine-and-suspension-purchase-signatures-panama-7109 Quote
