(Reports of) Animal Abuse Increased in Panama

Recommended Posts

The headline of this article is misleading.

In my opinion, the statistics mentioned show that there are more reports of animal abuse, which doesn't necessarily mean more abuse. I believe the numbers demonstrate that there is a higher public awareness and response to the problem, due to the enactment of the Animal Protection law a few years back.

Animal abuse increased in Panama

Regrettably this is a fact for many; a human act that transforms love into crime; a story that raised the voice of dozens and put two animals’ lives at risk; an act that is repeated daily.

The scene: the Veraguas terminal; the fact in question and a passenger whose luggage wa peculiar. Two canine hikers packed in plastic bags, tied with wire around the neck to prevent their mobility.

Passers-by and passengers alike were alarmed and made the odyssey those dogs were living viral as a demonstration of solidarity. As if it were not enough and did not represent a violation of the treaties established by the Humane Society, the owner of the vehicle unit authorized for animal transportation will now have animals travel in the upper part of the vehicle, exposing them to any accident.

According to the figures contributed to TVN by Duna Salamín, head of Animal Welfare of the Municipality of Panama, the number of complaints related to animal abuse has increased. In the last three years, the authority has received 754 complaints, which in turn have generated 504 inspections, 212 adoptions and 111 seizures.

In Panama there are no animal shelters but instead adoption houses that represent a safe alternative for animals that have suffered any kind of abuse.

The channels that are available for the community to report irregular situations or to leave evidence of an event linked to animal cruelty are: the portal www.mupa.gob.pa, the email bienestar.animal@mupa.gob.pa or calling to the telephone number 311.

Well, it is moving in the right direction. More public awareness.

DogCamp is helping to the Community! Today we had a meeting with the Corregidores and the Police at the event in the town, many people who loves the animals were there. The authorities are happy to help. We gave to them copies of the law, and talked about how we can continue working together.

The last week we rescued a dog with the help of the Corregidores and the police. DogCamp could help and solved the problem in five days. The people who asked for help told to us that nobody, any group could help the dog during eight months. Now the dog is in a foster of the Fundation Angeles con Colita who works with DogCamp rescuing, teaching in many schools in Boquete and David and explaining to the owner the importance of Spay and Neuter their animals.
