THE  Trade Union representing  Civil Aviation and Similar Industries workers  (Sielas), which represents the ground  staff of Copa Airlines delivered a  strike declaration to the Ministry of Labor, setting November 23 at 7:00 a.m. as the start time.

Sielas general secretary Cristóbal Souza, said that 35 points are still to be negotiated, mostly related to salary adjustments.

He said they are asking for an increase of 12% for all the airline’s ground workers. Both parties have reached agreements on 108 points for the new contract that will be valid for the next four years.

Souza said that negotiations with the company began on September 26 and until now they have not received any salary proposal. “Work has increased with the increase in aircraft, and the good performance of the company is not reflected in the pay of workers,” he said.

On June 15, Copa reached an agreement with the Union of Commercial Pilots a few hours after the start of the strike called by the 1000 unionized pilots.

Copa spokesmen said that “as is characteristic of our company and as has always been our main interest, we will continue negotiating with Sielas, promoting respect and mutual appreciation, maintaining communication at all times.

“We have full confidence that with the goodwill of Copa and Sielas  we will reach a favorable agreement for both parties before the date of completion of the negotiations and, in turn, ensure the sustainability of the business, sources of employment and competitiveness of the company in the long term and allows us to continue working together as a single team.”

Thanks, Keith. We were scheduled to connect at Tocumen from David this morning, but the warning last week of the labor dispute caused us to pay the change fees and leave a day early. In the event, we are pleased with our decision. The trip was sufficiently stressful without the threat of openended delays.

PS. An additional consequence is that we are rewarded with an extra day in Bridgetown. Sipping some of the local Mount Gay Eclipse, an agreeable alternative to my usual Abuelo 7!

Arbitration call in Copa-Airlines  dispute

copa-620x264.jpg

A STRIKE  by Copa Airlines ground staff set for Thursday, November 23 was suspended by the Ministry of Labor and Development which called for an arbitration process between Copa and the union SIELAS.

Workers demonstrated in the morning calling for a  negotiation of 35 points remaining after the 108 already agreed to a contract for four years. Negotiators had been meeting for 18 hours to avoid a strike. The majority of sticking points relate to 12% wage adjustments for all ground staff.

In a statement, Copa Airlines said that the willingness to reach an agreement on salary increases and benefits for the staff, in the two months that the negotiation lasted, was maintained at all times.

Tocumen Airport authorities do not anticipate any delays but advises travelers to call ahead to confirm flights on all airlines.

COPA Airlines it reached a direct agreement with the union representing  ground workers of the airline,  less than a day after the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development of Panama (Mitradel)  had declared mandatory arbitration. ” The new collective agreement between Copa and the National Trade Union of Aviation and related  Workers (SIELAS) governs the period 2017-2021.

The airline said that its “willingness to sign a direct agreement, instead of arbitration, is an act of good faith that sought to guarantee the best benefits for staff and make the increases effective before the end of the year.”

“Likewise, with this agreement, we can continue to focus on keeping Copa Airlines as a solid and stable company for all our employees and continue contributing in an important way to the welfare and development of the country,” the company said.
