Playa La Barqueta - Missing Male Teenager

An 18-year old male disappeared yesterday while bathing at Playa La Barqueta.

This beach is known for the dangerous riptides that occur there.

Looks must be deceiving.  I've seen bigger surf on lakes. 

I guess that what makes the riptides so dangerous.

It is the riptides, very dangerous ones.  I lost a good friend there several years ago.

The body of the young man was recovered late Tuesday morning.

B&A would know for sure, but I think there is a greater risk of riptides after big rainfalls.

There were big tide changes with a moon approaching full.  My hunch is that might increase the rips a bit.  That said, it's usually a large swell that is the culprit at that beach.  The wave comes straight in and current runs up the beach then out with outgoing rips.  Pics of that drowning scene looks like very little swell...flat actually.  Drinking added to the mix with some current and drop offs might have been part of the cause.
