Moderators Moderator_03 Posted November 4 Moderators Posted November 4 Quote Sinaproc Declares Red Alert in Five Provinces and One Indigenous Region November 3, 2024 The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) has declared a red alert in the provinces of Chiriquí, Bocas del Toro, Veraguas, Herrera, Los Santos and the Ngäbe Buglé region. This alert, which involves the total mobilization of available resources to deal with the emergency, came into effect at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2024. Meanwhile, the rest of the country remains on yellow alert, which implies an initial mobilization in the face of the imminence of an adverse event and the activation of the Emergency Operations Center (COE). Parades on November 3 suspended in several provinces due to bad weather. Monitoring carried out on the Tonosí River, which overflowed its banks. The declaration of red alert is based on the risks arising from the heavy rains and flooding recorded in the last 24 hours in a large part of the national territory, Sinaproc reported in a statement. According to the technical and scientific criteria of the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (Imhpa), the interaction of several atmospheric systems and the Intertropical Convergence Zone is generating significant accumulated rainfall. “Ninety percent of Panamanian soil is saturated, with Veraguas, Herrera, Los Santos and the Ngäbe Buglé region being the areas with the highest saturation,” said the Imhpa. If you took some personal pictures of the flooding like the one below, that you wish to share, send those pictures to PanamaNewsroom@gmail.com Additionally, it was reported that the movement of these atmospheric systems will affect the provinces of Chiriquí and Bocas del Toro, where a significant increase in rainfall is also expected. Due to adverse weather conditions, authorities have announced the suspension of the national parades scheduled for November 3 in Chiriquí, Bocas del Toro, Herrera, Los Santos, Veraguas and the Ngäbe Buglé region. Moderators Moderator_03 Posted November 5 Author Moderators Posted November 5 Quote Tropical Storm in the Caribbean Will Bring Heavy Rains to Central Provinces November 4, 2024 The Imhpa has issued a watch for heavy rain and significant thunderstorms across the country and maritime areas. This watch is valid until 11:59 pm on November 5, 2024. The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (Imhpa) issued this afternoon an update of its forecast on the weather conditions associated with Tropical Storm Rafael in the Caribbean basin, which is registering winds of up to 63 kilometers per hour. Emmanuel Velásquez, a meteorologist and forecaster at Imhpa, warned that the weather phenomenon has shown better organization and continues to advance, which represents a risk for the next few hours. According to the report, a mass of humid air is expected to enter the country, and in combination with daytime warming, trigger rain and thunderstorms. Velásquez explained that this phenomenon will mainly affect the central provinces and the western areas of Panama, where a greater concentration of rain is expected for tomorrow, November 5. In addition, the IMHPA has issued a special warning for border areas with Costa Rica, where rainfall is expected to intensify. Velásquez said that until the tropical depression moves away from the region, rain and thunderstorm conditions will continue to affect the country, urging the population to take the necessary precautions and stay informed through official channels of the Imhpa and civil protection authorities. In addition, the soil saturation for the last six hours indicates large areas with 100% saturation levels, meaning that flooding and landslides can occur with little rainfall. https://newsroompanama.com/2024/11/04/tropical-storm-in-the-caribbean-will-bring-heavy-rains-to-central-provinces/ Quote
Moderators Moderator_03 Posted November 5 Author Moderators Posted November 5 Quote The Caldera River in Boquete is at its Highest Level November 4, 2024 The Caldera River in Boquete , Chiriquí, is at its highest level on the afternoon of Monday, November 4, due to the intense rains that have been recorded in the last 24 hours. For the moment the river is within its channel but strong currents have residents and local authorities on alert. In other areas of Boquete, some tributaries have overflowed, including the La Zumbona stream in Palo Alto. The Chiriquí authorities ordered the temporary closure of the bridge over that ravine. Meanwhile, flooding has been reported in the Los Cabezos sector of Boquete. Some 16 people were evacuated from their homes after being submerged in water. José Donderis, former director of the National Civil Protection System, posted on his social networks that after a brief tour of some of Boquete’s ravines he was able to confirm that the floods have diminished, but the risk of landslides is possible. https://newsroompanama.com/2024/11/04/the-caldera-river-in-boquete-is-at-its-highest-level/ Quote
Moderators Moderator_03 Posted November 5 Author Moderators Posted November 5 Quote Warning in the Caribbean: Cyclone 18 Could Become Hurricane Rafael November 4, 2024 Atmospheric instability and the rains of the last few days have transformed into a tropical cyclone, number 18, which is currently moving north from Panama and Colombia to the Caribbean. The Center for Water for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean (Cathalac) warned that the development of Potential Tropical Cyclone 18 (north of Panama and Colombia) is observed, with a high probability of becoming a tropical storm or Hurricane Rafael in the next few hours. If it becomes a hurricane, it would not hit Panama. “Forecasts indicate that if this system strengthens it could be called Rafael and could impact Jamaica, Cuba and the Gulf of Mexico. However, we urge Central American countries and Mexico to remain alert for possible indirect effects of this climatic phenomenon.” He also noted that the US National Hurricane Center (NOAA) is already issuing warnings on the issue. “We are closely monitoring this phenomenon that directly and indirectly impacts the countries of the region. A low pressure area is also being monitored (yellow zone) over Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Antilles. Additionally, a zone of considerable cloudiness with humidity saturation and thunderstorms is observed north of Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela,” he said in a tweet on the social network X Cathalac. https://newsroompanama.com/2024/11/04/warning-in-the-caribbean-cyclone-18-could-become-hurricane-rafael/ Quote
