AMIGOS DE ANIMALES BOQUETE PANAMÁ   JULY 2023 NEWSLETTER JUNE CLINIC   On Sunday June 25th, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 295 animals, 103 dogs and 163 cats with six vets and one trainee working.    70% of the animals were female and 46% came from Boquete. 189 animals were brought in by owners and 70 came from collectors.   ALTO QUIEL MINI-CLINIC   On Sunday July 9th we took our van and about 25 volunteers to Escuela Alto Quiel. We had 2 vets who spayed or neutered 95 animals - 60 dogs and 35 cats.   Thanks to Cindy Clayton for organizing this clinic. We'd also like to thank all of the teachers and staff and in particular Yaline Cedeno for all of their assistance. EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM   Katrina Kneebone and a dedicated group of volunteers have been reaching out into the rural schools of Boquete with coloring books, and to teach students lessons on pet care and the need for animal sterilization.    Katrina and a small group also started an initiative called Basket Books with the aim of taking story and reference books into the classrooms. You may have seen them outside of the Tuesday Market asking for book donations. This project has been far more successful than they ever dared hope. They have already set up book corners for 43 classrooms.    We're happy to announce that we are combining these projects into an Amigos de Animales Educational Outreach program. We will work with school administrators and teachers to educate students about animal care and the need for sterilization, create reading corners in classrooms, and teach reading strategies to teachers. We also will plan mini clinics at remote schools like the one above in Alto Quiel.   We need your help. We'd like to have 1 or 2 volunteers for each school. We also need financial support to buy books and supplies, and to help cover sterilization costs. FAREWELL TO ALICIA & PHILIP McGUIGAN   On July 19th Amigos de Animales held a going away party for our past President, Alicia McGuigan, and her husband Philip McGuigan. They are returning to the US in August. Alicia was featured in our "Get to Know" section last month. She had been President for over 10 years, and she was a huge part of growing the Animales organization by building our volunteer base and our connections within the community. Philip has been a generous supporter of Animales, but has also been a "behind the scenes" supporter of Amigos de Boquete. He has been instrumental in providing two meals per school day to over 2,000 local school children for over 10 years. Alicia and Philip, thank you for all you have done for Animales and for this community. We will miss you, and we wish you the best. GET TO KNOW OUR AMIGOS DE ANIMALES FAMILY   This month we're featuring another Board member:   Name: Cary Gordon Trantham   Your position/title with AdA:  Treasurer/Director   How long have you been working with AdA?  I started volunteering in 2008. Took over the money in 2010. Can you tell us a little bit more about what you do with AdA?:  I work at Check-in by collecting funds, paying the veterinarians at the end of the clinic, etc. I reconcile bank accounts and prepare monthly financial statements for both Amigos de Animales, Inc. and Fundacion Amigos de los Animales de Boquete   Why would you encourage others to volunteer here with AdA?  It is so fulfilling to know that you are part of an organization that is really making a difference in the community. Also, everyone that you work with at Animales is a really awesome person. KIBBLE & BITS:   •  Food Drive: We are continuing to feed needy dogs and cats in Boquete at a cost of over $1,500 per month.  You can donate by clicking here   •  Membership Drive: Sign up for your annual Amigos de Animales membership and receive a great car magnet. Membership is still only $10. You can sign up at the BCP Tuesday Market or at a clinic.   •  Gift certificates: We have made gift certificates in the denomination of $10 and $20, the price of an individual sterilization for a cat or a dog. Give your neighbors, gardeners and maids certificates for their dogs and cats.  Let’s help each other help each other!   These certificates are an easy way to help. They are available at the Animales table at the BCP Tuesday Market or at the clinics   •  2024 Calendar: We've sold out of the 2023 calendars, and we only have a few more picture pages and business ads available for our 2024 calendar.
