NewsLady Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 BCP Steel Magnolias Review by Mark Heyer, Oct. 22, 2022 Performances Oct. 22, 23, 28, 29, 30 at the Rock Theater For her third production of the whirlwind 2022 BCP theater season, Artistic Director Gabrielle Reynolds directs a troupe of five brave and powerful women in the classic true story Steel Magnolias by Rob Harling. And what an acting tour de force they are. While this season’s first two BCP productions were all fun and games, Steel Magnolias has a great story to tell. Gabrielle’s expert direction brings the characters to life, showcasing the talents of our local actors with crisp timing, well-drawn character development, and excellent stagecraft. Everyone involved on and off stage should be very proud of their performance. Set in a small southern town’s beauty salon, we meet the grande dame Tammy (Gabrielle Reynolds), hiring a wayward youth Annelle (Sarene Johnson), local matrons Clairee (Denise Rodgers), Ouiser (Pam McDonald), M’Lynne (Jane Derry), and her daughter Shelby (Dakota Langer). Over four acts spanning several years, Steel Magnolias chronicles the evolution and strength of these women’s lives and relationships. Every one of the performances is solid, self-assured, and believable. From Sarene Johnson as the wayward youth to the delightfully irascible Pam McDonald, we know their characters like we know our own friends. I look forward to seeing each of these talented women headlining in future productions. With this ambitious and enjoyable production of Steel Magnolias, BCP theater is back on a solid footing and a bright future in Boquete. Quote
