AMIGOS DE ANIMALES BOQUETE PANAMÁ AUGUST 2022 NEWSLETTER JULY CLINIC & DOG CAMP MINI-CLINIC On Sunday July 26th, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 314 animals, 144 dogs and 170 cats with seven vets and one trainee working all day. This was the 3rd largest clinic we've ever done, but all of the vets were completed by about 4 PM. 71% of the animals were female and 48% came from Boquete (we've opened registration up to wider areas). Of this, 252 animals were brought in by owners and 62 came from collectors. We also held a mini-clinic for Dog Camp on August 14th. Dr. Virgilio spayed or neutered 14 dogs and 18 cats. Thanks go out to Javier and Magaly for finding these animals, and to all of the volunteers who helped. In January we raised our prices for the first time in years to $20 for a dog and $10 for a cat which has enabled us to pay our vets more for their services. Despite that, we still have a shortfall of over $3,000 at each clinic. Pictures from the Dog Camp mini-clinic: HELP US FEED THE LOCAL DOGS & CATS Since the pandemic started, we have been purchasing dog and cat food at a cost of over $1,000 per month. We have been distributing this food to local families and people who have feeding stations. This week, Kat McKay, a long-time volunteer and donor, helped deliver the food. Kat took the pictures below, and had this to say: "It is an eye opening experience to see what Animales does behind the scenes. Most people only know us as the Sterilization Clinic but we are so much more! The cat and dog food, bedding and cat houses made from containers [these were donated] costs Amigos de Animales over $1,000 per month. This must come from donations! Please encourage donations so that we can continue to do these good works for our community!" This month get to know: Name: Leslie Sherling Your position/title with Animales and how long have you worked here?: Secretary of Board; Recovery Supervisor - 7 years Can you tell us a little bit more about what you do with Animales?: I assist as needed with the volunteers making sure to address any issues and/or concerns that may arise with their animals; I work primarily with the big dogs, helping to wake them up after surgery and supervision; I also return the cats and dogs to their owners/collectors after they have awoken. Why would you encourage others to volunteer here with Animales?: It is a very necessary service that we provide. Our town is a much better place to be when we don't have packs of dogs in the streets and starving animals that are suffering. Can you tell us anything about your background you would like to share?: I am a gratefully retired Canadian from the beautiful province of British Columbia in the Vancouver area. My new job is being an active volunteer for several great organizations such as AdA, Buenos Vecinos Boquete - where we pack food and deliver it to over 100 families each month; also Boquete Health and Hospice with the meals and the equipment teams; and if and when the Jazz and Blues festival gets going again....that is a real fun event to volunteer at! Click here for the rest of Leslie's story and more pictures on our website. PANAMANIAN VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR We'd like to introduce you to Raquel Coba Boyd. She has volunteered to help coordinate our Panamanian and Spanish-speaking volunteers. We are always looking for more volunteers, especially those from Panamá. Unfortunately, we don't always do a good enough job communicating with them once they find us. Please contact Raquel at volunteer@aadab.org or by WhatsApp at 6114-8673. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED At our clinics, we have up to 75 volunteers helping at any one time. If you haven't been to a clinic before, or are interested in learning more about different departments, please watch our training here, and you can click here to watch a video with an overview of clinic day. A big thanks goes out to Kat McKay, who has created brief overviews of many of the non-clinic tasks that we need help with. Please click here to review. Thanks to Allison Wildman for agreeing to help with stories for the newsletter. She came up with the "Get to Know" and Trivia ideas. We can always use more stories! Please contact Alicia or Raquel at volunteer@aadab.org if you have any questions or would like to volunteer.
